Chapter 13 - The Hidden Threat

Chapter 12 — The Hidden Threat

Night fell over the mansion, and the halls were alive with shadows. Lina moved cautiously, holding a candle in her hand. The events of the past days had made her hyper-aware of every creak, every whisper, every flicker of movement.

She reached the library, determined to investigate the crash from Chapter 11. The large oak doors were slightly ajar, and inside, papers were scattered across the floor. A faint smell of perfume lingered — unfamiliar, yet hauntingly deliberate.

Lina stepped inside, trying to remain calm. "Who's here?" she called softly.

A figure emerged from behind the bookshelf. Quick, silent, and deliberate. Lina's heart raced.

"Stay back!" Adrian's voice cut through the silence. He appeared at the doorway, his presence commanding and sharp. The intruder froze.

The figure turned — it was a stranger, cloaked in shadows. A mask partially hid their face, but Lina could feel the malicious intent in their gaze.

"You shouldn't be here," the stranger whispered, moving closer.

Adrian stepped in front of Lina, blocking the intruder. "You were warned," he said coldly. His hand tightened around a hidden device at his belt.

The stranger hesitated, then vanished in a blur, slipping through a side door Lina hadn't noticed before.

Lina's hands shook. "Who… who was that?"

Adrian's jaw was tight. "Someone testing the mansion. Someone who wants to destabilize me… and now, you."

Lina swallowed hard. Her world, which had seemed luxurious and predictable just weeks ago, was now full of danger, secrets, and enemies she couldn't see.

She realized that surviving Adrian's world would require more than obedience and learning etiquette. She would need courage, cleverness, and careful observation — if she hoped to make it through in one piece.

Adrian's gaze softened for a brief moment, just enough for Lina to feel a flicker of reassurance. But even that warmth couldn't erase the fear:

The mansion was no longer just a home. It was a battlefield, and the hidden threats were just beginning.
