Chapter 8 - Before the Bell Rings

🌙 LaRusso Apartment — Prom Night, After Midnight

The apartment door clicked shut softly.

Jennifer kicked off her heels.

Her mascara had bled slightly beneath her eyes. Pink dress wrinkled. Flower crushed.

She didn't cry.

She just sat on the couch.

Daniel stood awkwardly for a moment
 then slowly sat beside her.

For the first time in weeks, there was no anger between them.

Just silence.

"You wanna yell at me?" she muttered.

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

She stared at her hands.

"I didn't mean for it to get like this."

He glanced at her.

"I know."

She swallowed.

"I fell for him."

Saying it out loud felt like stepping off a ledge.

Daniel didn't laugh.

Didn't judge.

He leaned back.

"That's kind of obvious."

She let out a weak breath that almost became a laugh.

"I thought I was controlling him."

"You can't control someone like that."

"I know that now."

Daniel looked at her gently.

"He hurt you."

"He didn't mean to."

Daniel almost protested — but stopped.

He studied her face.

"You really like him."

She nodded once.

"Yeah."

He sighed.

"I don't like him."

"I know."

"But I get it."

That surprised her.

"You do?"

He shrugged slightly.

"He's messed up."

"So are we."

A quiet beat.

Then Daniel pulled her into a hug.

A real one.

Sibling. Protective. Forgiving.

She rested her head on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"For what?"

"For falling for the enemy."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Guess that makes this interesting."

đŸ« The Next Morning — West Valley High

The hallways buzzed with post-prom gossip.

Daniel stood near the lockers with Ali Mills.

Ali looked confused.

"You're breaking up with me?"

Daniel nodded gently.

"I don't think this is fair to either of us."

She crossed her arms slightly.

"Because of Johnny?"

"No."

A pause.

"
Because I don't want to compete for someone's past."

Ali softened.

"I never meant to make it weird."

"I know."

They hugged lightly.

No drama.

Just closure.

From down the hall—

Johnny Lawrence noticed.

Then noticed something else.

Jennifer walking beside Daniel.

Laughing softly at something he said.

Johnny's jaw tightened.

He stepped forward.

"Jen."

She stopped.

Daniel stiffened.

"I'll be over there," Daniel muttered.

Johnny motioned her aside.

They stood near the staircase.

He ran a hand through his hair.

"I'm sorry."

It came out low.

Real.

She blinked.

"For what?"

"Last night."

"You didn't stop her."

"It was tradition. I didn't want to make a scene."

"You already did."

He exhaled sharply.

"I didn't want to embarrass you."

She studied him.

"You looked like you were enjoying it."

His eyes flashed.

"I wasn't."

His voice cracked slightly — barely noticeable.

"I've never
" He stopped.

Regained composure.

"Forget it."

She stepped closer.

"You've never what?"

He looked away.

"Nothing."

He almost broke.

Almost.

But Cobra Kai doesn't break.

She reached up.

Touched his jaw gently.

"I forgive you."

Before he could react—

She kissed him.

In the middle of the hallway.

Students gasped.

Tommy wolf-whistled.

Dutch smirked.

Bobby shook his head.

Johnny froze for half a second—

Then kissed her back.

Firm.

Claiming.

Not for the crowd.

For her.

When they pulled apart, the hallway was buzzing.

Daniel watched from a distance.

This time—

He didn't look furious.

Just
 uneasy.

🏯 Miyagi's Backyard — Three Days Before Tournament

Daniel practiced crane kicks.

"Balance," said Mr. Miyagi calmly.

Jennifer leaned against the fence watching.

"You ready?" she asked.

Daniel nodded.

"Three days."

She smiled softly.

"Don't lose."

He smirked.

"Don't date my opponent."

"Too late."

He shook his head.

But there was no bitterness anymore.

🐍 Cobra Kai Dojo — Evening

Jennifer walked past it intentionally.

Then stopped.

The door was open.

Inside—

Cobra Kai trained aggressively.

"Strike first!" barked John Kreese.

"Strike hard! No mercy!"

Johnny's movements were sharp.

Precise.

Focused.

But when he saw her standing near the doorway—

He smiled.

Small.

Barely there.

But real.

She lifted her hand.

Blew him a playful kiss.

He shook his head lightly.

Then returned to training.

She left without a word.

He trained harder.

🏆 All Valley Tournament — Day Of

The arena buzzed.

Crowds packed the stands.

Jennifer sat with popcorn balanced in her lap.

She scanned the entrance.

Cobra Kai entered together.

Black gis.

Sharp.

Johnny looked up—

And she waved.

He nodded once.

Then—

Daniel entered with Mr. Miyagi.

She stood.

Smiled at Daniel too.

He smiled back.

The tournament began.

One by one—

Fights.

Sweeps.

Shouts.

Johnny entered the mat.

His opponent rushed.

Johnny countered effortlessly.

Strike.

Point.

Victory.

Jennifer cheered loudly.

"That's my—" She stopped herself.

Johnny glanced at her in the crowd.

Brief eye contact.

Then—

Daniel's turn.

He moved lighter.

Different style.

Focused.

Point.

Victory.

She cheered again.

For both.

And that's when she realized—

There was no escaping this.

The bracket narrowed.

The crowd grew louder.

Until finally—

The announcement echoed:

"Final match
"

A long pause.

"
Daniel LaRusso."

Cheers.

"And Johnny Lawrence."

The crowd erupted.

Jennifer's breath caught.

Across the mat—

Daniel stood in white.

Johnny in black.

They locked eyes.

No smiles.

No mocking.

Just rivalry.

And in the stands—

Jennifer felt her heart split clean in two.

Because no matter who wins

Someone she loves is going to lose.

And the bell hadn't even rung yet.
