Chapter 6: The Preparation
The next morning, Amara arrived at school with a new determination.
She knew that the inter-school Mathematics Challenge would be more difficult than the competition she had just won.
Instead of being afraid, she decided to prepare herself.
During break time, Amara went to her Mathematics teacher.
"Ma, I want to start preparing for the new challenge."
Her teacher smiled.
"That is a good decision, Amara. I have some practice questions for you."
She handed Amara a notebook filled with difficult Mathematics questions.
Amara looked at the questions.
"Wow! These are really hard."
Her teacher laughed softly.
"They are supposed to be challenging. But don't worry. We will take them one step at a time."
Author's thought:I knew Amara had a lot to learn. Winning her first competition had given her confidence, but this new challenge would teach her that there was always room to grow.
Every afternoon, Amara practised.
Whenever she got a question wrong, she didn't throw her pencil down or give up.
Instead, she looked at her mistake and tried again.
One day, she struggled with a particularly difficult problem.
"I can't solve it," she said.
Her teacher looked at her.
"Are you sure?"
Amara looked at the question again.
She took a deep breath.
"No, ma. Let me try again."
She worked through the problem slowly.
Then suddenly, her face brightened.
"I got it!"
Her teacher smiled.
"Exactly. Sometimes, the answer is waiting for you to be patient."
Amara nodded.
As the days passed, she became better and more confident.
Then, one Friday afternoon, the principal called her to the office.
"Amara, I have some news for you."
Amara looked curious.
"What is it, ma?"
The principal smiled.
"The date for the inter-school Mathematics Challenge has been confirmed."
Amara's heart began beating faster.
"When is it?"
"Next week."
Amara's eyes widened.
Author's thought:Next week! Suddenly, the challenge didn't seem so far away. Amara had worked hard, but now she would have to prove to herself that she was truly ready.
Amara walked out of the office with her notebook held tightly against her chest.
"One week," she whispered.
She knew she had very little time left.
But she was ready to give it everything she had.
