Chapter 210 - Chapter 19: The Price of Survival and The Counterattack

Location: Sector 4 Black Market (Underground Metro Station), Mumbai

Date & Time: January 23, 2025 | 06:00 PM (IST)

An old underground metro station in Mumbai had been transformed into a grim, lawless bazaar. The air below was a stagnant, suffocating mix of sweat, the metallic tang of blood, and raw fear. Rudra, his face hidden behind his mask and the deep hood of his sweatshirt, descended the stairs into the gloom.

In the outer reaches of the station, he saw the hollowed-out faces of ordinary survivors. These were the people who had survived the initial flood of monsters but were now slowly dying of hunger and thirst. In the center, mutated thugs and rogue Awakened had set up makeshift stalls, ruling the station with brute force.

Rudra stopped near a stall where a man was weeping, clutching a few crumpled banknotes in his trembling hands.

"Please, sir... my child hasn't eaten in three days," the man pleaded, his voice breaking. "I have these last thousand rupees... please, just a little rice or half a bottle of water."

The hulking mutant behind the stall didn't even look at him. "A kilo of rice is 4,000, and a bottle of water is 2,000. Your thousand rupees won't even buy you two drops of water here. Either bring the full amount or move along. There's a long line of beggars behind you."

Rudra's blood began to boil. He watched the man's desperation, and the rage within him flared. His fists clenched, and dark mana began to pulse violently through his veins. He was ready to tear the stall apart.

"Don't even think about it, kid," Ruin Soul's voice, as cold as a winter grave, cut through his anger. "You think being a D-Ranker makes you a god? Look around. The ones running this market are C and B-Rank rogue mutants. You touch one of them, and this entire market will swarm you. Stay calm."

Rudra took a long, shaky breath, forcing the rage back down. Ruin Soul was right. He wasn't strong enough to dismantle this corrupt system—not yet.

He moved past the crowds into the darker section of the market where Awakened traded in Essence Stones and monster materials. At a stone counter, he placed the E-Rank core, genetic materials, and essence pieces he had harvested from his earlier hunt. Without a word, the dealer inspected the loot and tossed a thick bundle of cash toward him.

Rudra grabbed the money. He added it to the small amount of cash he already had and walked back toward the food stalls. Without haggling, he paid the exorbitant prices, buying bags of rice, canned food, and several bottles of water.

He then walked back to the weeping man and the other shivering families huddled in the shadows. Silently, he placed the supplies in front of them.

The survivors stared at him in pure shock. An old woman's eyes filled with tears as she reached out to touch his hand with her frail fingers. "God bless you, son. You've come to us like an angel. May you have a long, long life."

Rudra didn't say a word. He simply nodded, adjusted his mask, and walked out of the suffocating station. They were calling out blessings to his back, and for the first time in a week, Rudra felt a strange, quiet peace settle in his chest.

Location: Global News Network Broadcast

Date & Time: January 24, 2025 | 10:00 AM (IST)

The world was slowly emerging from its state of absolute shock. The copper smell of blood in the air was finally beginning to fade. In Geneva, the G.D.A. had finally issued a tentative sigh of relief. After a week of relentless slaughter, the combined forces of the N.D.A.I., U.S.A.A., and other global associations had managed to clear the straggling monsters from the main city streets.

But the biggest shock came from China.

Their association, 'The Heavenly Shield,' had officially severed ties with the G.D.A. In just one week, they had independently built a massive army of Dungers ranging from B to E-Rank. More importantly—they had stopped using standard steel. By harvesting genetic materials, bones, and cores from the fallen beasts, they had forged deadly weapons capable of cutting through monsters in their own language. China had become an impregnable fortress.

A broken, crackling broadcast played on repeat over the airwaves:

"The first wave of the global breach has been contained. The G.D.A. and local forces have regained ground control. But the price of this survival is catastrophic. We lack exact figures... no one can truly count the lost... but estimates suggest that nearly 50% of the world's population has perished in this single week. The Hell Gates are still scheduled to open in three weeks..."

The broadcast estimated 50%, but the cold reality was closer to 40%. Still, the terror had been permanently etched into the hearts of the survivors.

Location: The Outskirts of Mumbai

Time: 08:00 PM (IST)

The darkness of night settled over the ruined skyline of the city. Rudra stood on the balcony of a shattered building. During the day, he had paid his debt to his own humanity by feeding the helpless. But the time for kindness was over for now.

The wind was cold. Rudra reached out his right hand. Flash. The D-Rank dark, serrated dagger manifested in his grip. The red vein of the blade glowed softly, pulsing in sync with the dark mana within him.

The system and the G.D.A. had done their part, but in the silent corners of Dharavi, there were still powerful, hidden monsters that had escaped the initial purge.

"The world is preparing," Rudra said, staring into the dark abyss of the city. "And so must I."

He leaped from the building, vanishing like a shadow into the deepest corners of Dharavi. The hunt was far from over.
