A week had passed since the reality fractures first tore open the sky.
Mumbai was no longer the city that glittered at night. The sky was a permanent, suffocating shade of grey, choked by ash and drifting smoke. The streets no longer echoed with the wailing sirens of the G.D.A. or the buzzing of N.D.A.I. drones. Nearly 40% of the world's population had been wiped out in that initial flood of monsters. Those who remained lived in the suffocating grip of terror, hiding in underground bunkers or reinforced shelters.
The initial fountain-like eruption of monsters from the fractures had finally slowed. The beasts that had spilled out were now claiming territories across the ruined city, hunting in small, predatory packs or as lone stalkers.
On the third floor of a shattered commercial building in Andheri, Rudra sat in the shadows. His clothes were stained with grime and dried blood, but his eyes held a terrifyingly cold, calculating stillness. Over the last seven days, he had watched humans weep and die, but he had systematically detached himself from those emotions. To survive, he had to become as cold as the blade he carried.
His [Primal Adaptation] picked up a movement nearly 100 meters away. An E-Rank monster, with an MP of roughly 3,000, was scavenging through a mountain of rubble. It looked like a mutated, six-legged hound, its nose twitching as it searched for prey.
Rudra rose silently. His own MP stood at 5,200, giving him a massive advantage in speed and raw power. Without making a sound, he descended the stairs and positioned himself behind a wrecked car.
The hound suddenly caught a scent in the air. It began to turn, its predatory instincts flared.
But Rudra was already there. He thrust his empty hand forward. Flash. The Phantom Blade trick. The D-Rank dark dagger manifested in his grip instantly, and in one fluid motion, he drove it through the creature's skull. The monster collapsed to the pavement without a sound.
Rudra's breathing didn't even falter. This had become his routine.
"Clean kill," Ruin Soul's voice resonated in his mind. "But don't just absorb its MP this time. The world has changed, kid, and the real treasures of this era are hidden inside these beasts. Open your Inventory and dismantle the body."
Rudra placed his hand on the hound's carcass. Using a combination of [Gluttony] and the basic logic of [Darksmith], he focused his mind. Suddenly, the hound's body began to dissolve, breaking into six distinct components that floated in the air before being sucked into his 500 sq. ft. Inventory.
Rudra observed the categorized items within his void:
Genetic: Sharp teeth and reinforced bone fragments (For weapon crafting).
Fiber: Tough, mana-infused muscle threads (For armor crafting).
Dust: Faint mana residue that shimmered in the air.
Soul Fragment: A flickering wisp of energy left behind after death.
But Rudra's gaze locked onto the final two items. One was a Core—a small, glowing orb vibrating with pure energy.
"That's a Core," Ruin Soul explained. "It's a source of pure mana. You can absorb it to increase your MP, or use it later to power high-rank weapons."
The second item was a dark, crystallized stone—an Essence Stone.
"Look at that closely," Ruin Soul's voice took on a serious tone. "Human paper money is now nothing but trash. This Essence Stone is the currency of the new world. What this stone can truly do... you'll find out when the time is right. For now, hoard them."
Rudra nodded and stored everything into the void. He was about to leave when his enhanced hearing caught the sound of voices.
"Hurry up! Do it before another horde picks up our scent!"
Rudra immediately ducked behind a crumbling wall. He saw three men approaching from the other end of the alley. They weren't G.D.A. or N.D.A.I. soldiers. Their clothes were rugged and worn, and they carried modified weapons that didn't look like standard-issue steel. These were Awakened, but they were rogue—scavengers of the new world.
The three worked together to tear open the carcass of a D-Rank monster lying in the street.
"Found it!" One of the men pulled out a large, blood-stained Essence Stone and held it up to the light. Greed flashed in his eyes. "At the Sector 4 Black Market, this stone will get us a month's worth of rations and maybe a new set of armor. The Boss will be pleased."
"Get the Core too, hurry," the second man commanded. "Cores are in high demand."
Rudra watched them from the darkness, his mind racing. The G.D.A.'s orderly system only existed on TV screens. The ground reality was far more brutal. New gangs, Black Markets, and a whole new economy had already established themselves in the shadows.
