Chapter 3 - When the Lights Went Out

For a second, Elena couldn't even breathe. The world around her vanished — no lights, no shadows, no face to read. Only the sound of her own heartbeat echoing in her ears.

"Don't panic," the man's voice came from somewhere in the dark. Closer now.

"Who are you?" she demanded, her voice trembling despite her effort to stay strong.

A pause.

"You deserve the truth," he said quietly. "But the truth isn't simple."

The streetlights flickered once… twice… then returned in a weak glow.

Elena blinked.

And when she saw his face clearly, her heart nearly stopped.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was Daniel's older brother, Marcus.

"You?" she whispered.

Marcus looked tired, guilt written across his face. "Daniel didn't leave you," he said. "He was trying to protect you."

The words hit her like ice.

"Protect me from what?"

Marcus glanced down the empty street before answering. "From people he got involved with. Dangerous people. The night he disappeared… it wasn't an accident."

Elena's fingers tightened around the silver necklace.

"He found out something he shouldn't have," Marcus continued. "And when he realized they were watching you too… he made a choice."

Her chest felt hollow. "What choice?"

Marcus looked at her, eyes heavy with regret.

"He chose to disappear… so they would stop looking at you."

The wind picked up again, colder than before.

"And now?" Elena asked softly.

Marcus hesitated.

"They're back."

A car engine started somewhere in the distance.

Too close.

Elena turned toward the sound, fear creeping back into her veins.

Some truths don't set you free.

Some truths pull you deeper into the dark.

And as the headlights slowly turned the corner toward Maple Street, Elena realized—

This story was far from over.
