Luckily, John referred to me as "you" for the rest of the night. My real name never slipped out of his mouth, even when he was horribly drunk and swaying on his stool. I had to take a cab back home only with John. Mason was nowhere to be found, proving that Xavier's premonition had been correct.
I could barely sleep that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Xavier's face. I desperately wanted to know if something had gone down between Mason and Xav. The curiosity was eating me alive. That's why I called Mason the very next afternoon.
"Urgh. Hello? What's wrong?"
"You're still sleeping? It's six in the afternoon, man." I spoke into the phone, impressed by both the time and the sheer grogginess of his voice.
"It was a very exhausting night." He let the word stretch out suggestively, followed by a low, gravelly giggle. "If you know what I mean, haha!"
