Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Greed

In a humble corner of Indonesia, Yusuf Ali and Amina Begum lived a simple but happy life with their three children: Shejuti, Nadiya, and Farid. Though they struggled to run their small grocery shop, the younger siblings were content with whatever they had. However, the eldest sister, Shejuti, was consumed by a deep-seated greed. She despised their poverty and dreamed of a life filled with luxury. Driven by her obsession, she sought out an old witch deep within a dark forest. Shejuti pleaded for immense wealth, and the witch agreed to help her by summoning a powerful Djinn.

The witch warned Shejuti that she must please the Djinn to gain his favor. Desperate for money, Shejuti allowed the witch to take a lock of her hair, a sample of her blood, and a piece of her skin. She was then led into a flower-decorated room where the witch tied a mysterious black thread around her wrist. For ten minutes, Shejuti endured a terrifying encounter with the red-eyed shadow spirit to seal their pact. When she left, the witch gave her more black threads for her family, which Shejuti tied around their wrists, falsely claiming they were holy charms for protection.

The very next morning, a miracle seemed to happen. The family found boxes containing 1.5 billion Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in their shop and another 1.5 billion IDR under their beds. While the parents believed it was a blessing, Shejuti knew the dark price. For ten years, the family lived in extreme luxury, receiving 3 billion IDR every month. But after a decade, the Djinn returned in Shejuti's dream with a chilling demand: he wanted her for 24 hours in exchange for even more wealth. He threatened to slaughter her entire family if she refused.

The next morning, Shejuti returned to the witch's hut and entered the room for a full 24-hour cycle with the spirit. When she finally emerged the following day, she was a broken shell. She stumbled out of the forest, her clothes shredded and her body covered in blood. Before she could reach her house, she collapsed and died of extreme blood loss. Her family rushed her to the hospital, where the autopsy revealed horrific internal trauma, but they could never have imagined that a supernatural entity was the culprit.

Upon returning home, the grieving family found one room completely packed with piles of cash—7.5 billion IDR. But the sight of the money filled them with hatred. Feeling that these "holy threads" had brought nothing but misery and death, the mother and the two younger siblings tore the black threads from their wrists. They did not know they had just removed their only shield. That night, the Djinn appeared in their home with a massive blade. With silent, lethal precision, he decapitated Amina, Nadiya, and Farid. The next morning, the mansion stood silent, filled with mounds of blood-soaked Rupiah and the lifeless, headless bodies of a family destroyed by greed.

The story of Shejuti serves as a haunting reminder that there are no shortcuts to true prosperity. Wealth gained through dark paths and immoral pacts always demands a price far greater than any treasure—it demands the soul and the lives of those we love. While nature and destiny are beyond our control, our choices define our end. In the pursuit of luxury, Shejuti lost her humanity, and in the end, her greed turned a happy home into a graveyard of blood-stained gold.
