Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Magnetic

Zhan didn't know when his eyes moved.

One moment he was looking at Yibo's sleeping face…

…and the next—

his gaze had drifted lower.

To his lips.

They were slightly parted in sleep, soft breaths slipping out between them. The lower lip was fuller than the top, faintly pink, the skin smooth in a way that didn't look real. Not polished. Not prepared. Just naturally soft.

Untouched softness.

The kind that didn't know the world could be cruel.

Zhan's fingers, still cupping his cheek, stilled completely.

His eyes narrowed a fraction.

Not in anger.

In focus.

Like he'd noticed something he shouldn't have noticed.

His gaze stayed there.

Longer than it should.

Longer than necessary.

Longer than reasonable.

Yibo shifted slightly in his sleep.

Just a small movement.

His lips parted a little more as his breathing deepened, warm air brushing faintly across Zhan's wrist.

Zhan's jaw tightened.

Soft.

That was the first word that came to his mind.

Soft.

Not weak.

Not fragile.

Just…

soft.

His eyes traced the shape unconsciously.

The gentle curve.

The faint shine of moisture where his breath passed.

The way his lower lip tucked inward for a second before relaxing again.

Something slow and unfamiliar stirred low in Zhan's chest.

Not heat.

Not desire.

Something quieter.

More dangerous.

His thumb shifted slightly against Yibo's cheek.

Just enough that his hand tilted his face a fraction toward him.

Not intentional.

Just instinct.

Just… closer.

Zhan's gaze darkened slightly.

He could see every detail now.

Every tiny line.

Every faint movement.

Every soft breath.

For a split second—

his eyes flicked from Yibo's lips…

…back to his eyes.

Still closed.

Still asleep.

Still unaware.

His attention dropped again.

Back to his mouth.

The thought came.

Sudden.

Uninvited.

Clear.

What would they feel like?

Zhan's breath stalled.

His fingers froze.

His shoulders stiffened slightly.

No.

His expression hardened almost instantly.

His hand stopped moving.

His jaw set.

The softness in his gaze disappeared like it had never existed.

Why would he?

Why would he kiss him?

He wouldn't.

Of course he wouldn't.

That was ridiculous.

Illogical.

Pointless.

Weak.

His eyes narrowed faintly, as if scolding himself.

He shifted his hand slightly away from Yibo's face—

not removing it,

just loosening the hold.

Creating distance.

Control.

He exhaled slowly through his nose.

"…Absurd," he muttered under his breath.

But his voice came out quieter than he intended.

Still…

His eyes didn't move.

They stayed there.

On Yibo's lips.

Watching them rise and fall with each breath.

Watching them part slightly.

Watching them soften again.

Something in his chest pressed tighter.

Annoying.

Persistent.

Unreasonable.

He frowned faintly.

He didn't want to look.

Didn't need to look.

Shouldn't look.

And yet—

he didn't look away.

His fingers shifted once more against Yibo's cheek, almost unconsciously tilting his face another fraction closer.

Not enough to wake him.

Just enough to—

No.

His hand stilled again.

Zhan's eyes darkened slightly at himself this time.

Control.

He had control.

He always had control.

His voice dropped to a whisper only the sleeping boy could hear.

"…I wouldn't."

A pause.

"…Why would I."

Not a question.

A statement.

Firm.

Certain.

Final.

But his gaze stayed on those soft, parted lips for a long… long time after that.

Morning came quietly.

Soft sunlight slipped through the curtains, pale gold spreading across the room, touching the bed, the sheets… and Yibo's face.

He was already awake.

Not moving much.

Just lying there with his eyes open, watching the ceiling like it was something interesting.

Zhan woke a few minutes later.

His eyes opened slowly, awareness returning in layers.

The first thing he saw—

was Yibo.

Close.

Too close.

Curled slightly toward him, hair messy, lashes still heavy with sleep, lips faintly parted as he breathed.

Zhan stilled.

And just like the night before…

his gaze dropped.

Straight to his mouth.

Soft.

Still soft.

Morning light made them look even softer.

Warmer.

Alive.

"…Husband morning," Yibo said gently.

Zhan's eyes didn't lift.

They stayed on his lips.

Watching them move when he spoke.

Watching the way they shaped each word slowly, carefully, like he was making sure he pronounced them right.

"…Morning," Zhan replied.

His voice sounded normal.

Controlled.

But his eyes still hadn't moved.

Yibo blinked sleepily.

"…Husband look funny."

That made Zhan finally glance up.

"…What."

"…Eyes stuck," Yibo explained seriously.

Zhan frowned slightly.

"…Stuck where?"

Yibo pointed vaguely.

"…There."

Zhan followed the direction.

Yibo was pointing at his own mouth.

Zhan's jaw tightened.

"…They're not stuck."

"…Oh," Yibo said obediently.

He accepted that immediately.

Didn't question it.

Didn't think deeper.

Because if Zhan said something, it must be true.

They got up.

Yibo changed slowly, carefully, making sure his clothes were neat, his buttons straight, his sleeves even. He checked twice. Then once more.

When he walked out with Zhan for breakfast, his posture was straight, steps cautious, expression focused.

Trying.

Always trying.

At the table, Yibo sat quietly.

Hands in his lap.

Waiting.

Only when Zhan picked up his chopsticks did Yibo pick up his own.

"…Rice warm," Yibo said softly after a few bites.

Zhan's eyes shifted.

Again.

To his lips.

They moved gently around each word.

Soft.

Pink.

Distracting.

"…Mm," Zhan answered.

But he hadn't actually registered what Yibo said.

Because he was watching his mouth.

Again.

Yibo took another bite.

"…Good."

Zhan's gaze followed the movement automatically.

Like it had its own will.

Across the dining room, one of the servants noticed.

She glanced at another servant.

The second servant followed her gaze—

—and saw it too.

The CEO.

Cold.

Untouchable.

Feared.

Respected.

Staring at his spouse's lips like he'd forgotten how eyes worked.

The servants quickly looked down again.

Pretending not to notice.

But they had noticed.

Very clearly.

"…Husband eat more," Yibo said gently.

Zhan's gaze shifted again.

To his mouth.

Watching the word more form.

Watching the tiny movement of his lower lip.

Watching the soft breath that followed.

"…You talk a lot in the morning," Zhan said flatly.

Yibo's eyes widened slightly.

"…Too much?"

Zhan stared at his lips again.

"…Yes."

"…Sorry."

The apology was soft.

Careful.

His lips pressed together slightly after saying it.

Zhan's fingers tightened faintly around his chopsticks.

Because pressed together…

they looked even softer.

Silence fell.

Yibo obediently stopped talking.

He focused on eating quietly.

Chewing slowly.

Swallowing carefully.

Not making sound.

Being good.

But after a minute…

"…Husband—"

Zhan's eyes dropped again.

Automatically.

Instantly.

The servants noticed again.

One nearly dropped a spoon.

"…What," Zhan said, voice lower now.

Yibo pointed at the tea.

"…Hot. Careful."

Zhan blinked once.

Then realized—

Yibo had warned him so he wouldn't burn his mouth.

His gaze stayed there.

On Yibo's lips.

Just… resting there.

Longer than necessary.

Longer than appropriate.

Longer than normal.

Yibo tilted his head.

"…Husband?"

Zhan didn't answer.

Because he was still watching.

Still staring.

Still noticing.

Still thinking—

Soft.

Yibo followed his gaze again.

Looked down.

Realized Zhan was staring at his mouth.

His expression brightened slightly.

"…Food on face?" he asked helpfully.

One of the servants bit her lip hard to stop herself from reacting.

Zhan inhaled slowly.

"…No."

"…Oh."

Satisfied, Yibo nodded and kept eating.

Completely unaware.

Completely innocent.

Completely oblivious.

Across the table, Zhan looked away.

Finally.

But only for a few seconds.

Then his eyes drifted back again.

Like they'd memorized the path.

Like they didn't need permission anymore.

And the servants noticed.

Of course they noticed.

Anyone with eyes would.

Everyone…

except the one person being watched.

It became obvious.

Not loudly obvious.

Not scandalously obvious.

But the kind of obvious that lives in the air… the kind people feel before they even understand it.

Everyone could see it.

The servants.

The guards.

Even the old housekeeper who had worked in the mansion for twenty years and claimed nothing surprised her anymore.

They all saw it.

Every single time Yibo spoke—

Zhan's eyes went to his lips.

Not once.

Not twice.

Every time.

Like a compass needle finding north.

Like gravity.

Like instinct.

It wasn't subtle.

It wasn't hidden.

It wasn't controlled.

And that was the strangest part.

Because Zhan was control.

Zhan was discipline.

Zhan was restraint carved into bone.

Yet now—

his gaze betrayed him again and again and again.

Yibo sat in the living room that afternoon, quietly stacking wooden blocks into a crooked tower, tongue slightly peeking out in concentration.

"…Husband see?" he asked softly, proud. "Tall."

Zhan stood near the window.

And like always—

his eyes dropped.

Not to the blocks.

To Yibo's mouth.

The housemaid dusting the shelf froze for half a second.

Again.

Zhan didn't even realize he was doing it anymore.

That was the problem.

At first, it had been accidental.

Then unconscious.

Now—

automatic.

Because every time Yibo spoke…

those lips moved.

Softly.

Slowly.

Carefully shaping words like they were fragile things.

And Zhan noticed.

He noticed too much.

The curve.

The softness.

The warmth of breath between syllables.

The way the lower lip tucked in slightly when he was thinking.

The way it trembled faintly when he was unsure.

The way it parted when he waited for praise.

Anyone watching could tell what that kind of staring meant.

Anyone.

Even people who knew nothing about romance could understand that look.

It was the look of someone thinking about a kiss.

The servants exchanged glances more than once.

Not gossiping.

Just… silently acknowledging what was painfully visible.

Because the truth was simple:

Zhan looked like he wanted to kiss him.

So why didn't he?

Because Zhan himself didn't admit it.

Not even in his own mind.

Especially not there.

He called it observation.

He called it distraction.

He called it irritation.

He called it habit.

He called it anything—

anything except what it actually was.

I don't want to kiss him, he told himself.

Of course not.

Ridiculous.

He was just looking.

Just noticing.

Just… seeing.

That was all.

And yet—

his eyes kept going back.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Across the room, Yibo finished his block tower and clapped softly for himself.

"…Done," he whispered proudly.

Zhan's gaze dropped instantly.

Lips.

Again.

The old housekeeper slowly turned away to hide her expression.

Because even she could see it now.

Clear as daylight.

But the only person who didn't see it…

…was Yibo.

Because Yibo didn't understand looks like that.

Didn't understand tension.

Didn't understand implication.

Didn't understand silent wanting.

Those were complicated things.

Adult things.

Hidden things.

And Yibo's world wasn't built for hidden meanings.

If someone wanted something—

in his world, they said it.

If someone felt something—

in his world, they showed it.

If someone liked something—

in his world, they reached for it.

So he didn't understand why Zhan stared.

Didn't question it.

Didn't analyze it.

Didn't notice the weight behind it.

To him, it was simple:

Husband looking.

That was all.

And Zhan?

Zhan didn't do it—

didn't close the distance—

didn't lean in—

didn't take that last inch—

because that would mean admitting something.

Something he had never admitted to anyone.

Something he barely allowed himself to feel.

Something dangerous.

Something soft.

Something that would shatter the cold, untouchable man he had always been.

So instead—

he just stared.

Across the room, Yibo suddenly looked up again.

"…Husband?"

Zhan's eyes dropped automatically.

Lips.

Soft.

Moving.

Alive.

"…What."

"…You angry?"

Zhan blinked once.

"…No."

"…Oh." Yibo smiled faintly, relieved.

And that smile—

made his lips curve.

Softly.

Zhan's fingers twitched at his side.

Just once.

The maid watching from the corner thought:

Sir is losing a battle he doesn't even know he's fighting.

And the cruelest irony?

Zhan could command companies.

Control boardrooms.

Silence rooms with one look.

But he couldn't control his own eyes…

…when it came to Yibo's mouth.
