Chapter 64 - Alice - The Sweet Faerie: Part 1

The Crimson Heart of Oakhaven

Chapter 42: A Dawn Retold

Sir Valerius stood atop the shattered battlements, his silver armor catching the amber bleed of the setting sun. The shadow-dragon lay vanquished. The dark sorcerer's curse had shattered. Yet, beneath his scarred breastplate, his battle-weary heart refused to settle. Not yet.

A heavy groan of iron pierced the silence. The courtyard doors parted.

And there she stood. Princess Aurelia. Spun-gold tresses cascaded down her silk gown, miraculously untouched by the soot of the burning kingdom or the grime of the dungeons.

"Valerius," she breathed. Her voice—a sweet, fragile melody—silenced the lingering winds of war.

The legendary broadsword slipped from his grip, ringing against the cobblestones. He sprinted across the ruined courtyard, shedding his heavy gauntlets as he ran. He caught her by the waist, lifting her into the air while she wept tears of unadulterated joy.

"I swear by the eternal stars, Aurelia," he murmured fiercely into her hair. "I will spend a thousand lifetimes ensuring you never know fear again."

She looked up, her breath catching as she met his smoldering gaze. "Then kiss me, my brave knight. Let the world burn away."

Amidst the ruins of a broken era, their lips met, sealing a promise of a thousand beautiful tomorrows.

"Yes! Finally!" Alice whisper-shrieked to the empty room.

She crushed the leather-bound novel to her chest, kicking her legs in a frantic, joyful rhythm against her mattress of scattered books. In her flailing, her heel clipped the edge of a nearby, emptied oak bookshelf.

It tipped.

"Crap!" She threw her hand toward the falling timber. "HTKDXZQZOG GFT RKGH:ZKQITKT!"

The incantation commanded the very fabric of the room, seizing the shelf mid-air. But the spell strained, holding the heavy wood at bay for barely a heartbeat before it began to slip again.

"HTKDXZQZOG ZTF—" She stared at her trembling fingers, hesitating. "RKGH—"

A sharper, faster voice cut through the air. "HTKDXZQZOG GFT RKGH:HTSSTKT."

The bookshelf snapped backward, aligning itself with mathematical precision—standing more rigid and upright than it had prior to the fall. A second later, the bedroom door drifted open.

"Oh! My deepest apologies," Alice stammered, scrambling to sit up. "I was simply a bit too swept up in my reading—"

"Alice, my dear, are you unharmed?" The silver-haired woman swept into the room, cutting off Alice's apology as she enveloped her in a sudden, suffocatingly tight embrace.

Immaculate as always... and she is quite literally crushing my ribs, Alice thought.

"Well? Speak to me." The woman pulled back, holding Alice firmly at arm's length. Enchanting, deep-crimson eyes locked onto hers, scanning intently for injuries.

"I am perfectly well, truly," Alice blinked, responding on pure reflex. "Not a scratch—"

"Did I just hear you attempt a ten-drop exertion?"

Alice winced. "Ah, well—"

"A wooden fixture is entirely replaceable, Alice! You are not. You could have caused yourself severe harm."

"I suppose that was rather careless..." Alice offered a weak, breathy laugh.

Ms. Noctiliene, you aren't giving me a chance to speak... And isn't it just ten drops? It's not like I'd die from it...

But before she could dwell on her secret magical progress, a sudden, grim memory pierced the lingering romantic haze of her novel. The phantom chill of the past dragged her abruptly back to reality.

"You are entirely right, ma'am," Alice said, her voice dropping its playful edge. "I will exercise far greater caution moving forward."

Ms. Noctiliene's tense shoulders softened. "Turn around. Let me assist in recovering your energy."

Alice complied, the familiar, bubbling excitement returning to her tone. "Would you be willing to teach me a new casting today?"

"Of course, my dear," Noctiliene murmured gently. "Whatever you would like."
