I lay still on the mattress for a moment, enjoying the peace of the large room. Stephan's arm was resting around my waist. His body felt warm, solid, and safe against mine even as he slept.
He stirred beside me as his phone alarm buzzed on the nightstand. His eyes opened slowly and looked directly into mine.
For a short moment, everything felt simple and calm just the two of us together in bed, with no unseen writer controlling our actions, no strange Book making trouble, and no dark threats hanging over our heads.
"I have to go to the office today," he said in a low voice, his speech still rough from sleep. He reached out, brushed a strand of hair away from my face, and kissed my forehead.
"There is a lot of damage control to handle at the company after everything that happened yesterday. Will you be okay staying here by yourself?"
I nodded my head, forcing a reassuring smile onto my face despite the tight pull across my sore skin.
