Chapter 37 - THE EVIDENCE SPEAKS

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

A week later, the detective called Richard with an update.

The financial records had been examined, and several transactions were inconsistent with the company's official accounts. Peter's testimony supported the conclusion that records had been altered during Robert's time as a business partner.

Robert was asked to attend a further interview.

When Richard shared the news with Daniel and Aisha, relief spread through the room.

"Does this mean he will finally face consequences?" Daniel asked.

"The investigators have enough information to continue their case," Richard replied. "What happens next depends on the legal process."

Aisha looked at the documents on the desk.

"And my mother?"

"The evidence supports her account that the accusations against her were false. The investigators have recorded her statement, and I will make a formal declaration correcting what I said about her."

Aisha nodded.

It wasn't possible to return the years Grace had lost, but it mattered that someone was finally taking responsibility.

Later that day, Richard visited Grace.

He brought a written statement acknowledging that he had allowed the accusations against her to continue without sufficient evidence.

"I should have spoken up years ago," he said. "I cannot undo the damage, but I can stop pretending that my silence was harmless."

Grace read the statement carefully.

"Thank you for finally acknowledging what happened."

Richard lowered his head.

"I hope this gives you some peace."

"It does," Grace replied. "But my peace will come from knowing I no longer have to hide from the past."

When Richard left, Grace placed the statement in a folder with Samuel's letter.

Aisha watched her mother for a moment.

"How do you feel?"

"Lighter," Grace admitted. "Not because everything has been repaired, but because the truth is no longer mine alone to carry."

Aisha hugged her.

That evening, Daniel took Aisha to dinner. They celebrated the progress quietly, choosing not to treat the investigation as finished before the legal process had run its course.

As they sat together, Aisha looked at him.

"When we first met again, I thought seeing you would be the hardest thing I ever had to do."

"And now?"

"Now I'm glad I didn't walk away."

Daniel smiled.

"So am I."

She took his hand.

"I can't promise I'll never be afraid again."

"I don't need you to."

"And I can't promise that we'll never argue."

"That would be unrealistic."

Aisha laughed.

"But I can promise to talk to you instead of making assumptions."

Daniel squeezed her hand.

"That's all I've ever wanted."

Their progress had been slow, but it was real.

And for Aisha, that was worth more than any grand promise.
