Angelica was waiting at the top of the stairs, her arms crossed over her chest, her foot tapping on the floor.
Kai saw her from halfway down the corridor and briefly considered turning round and going back the way he had come, which would have meant walking straight back into the beta wing, which was worse.
He had seen the look on her face enough times in his life to know that walking past her was not going to be simple.
"Not now, Mum, please." He moved to pass her, but Angelica's hand shot out and caught him by the arm.
"Kai, listen to me." Her voice was urgent, almost pleading. "I've been thinking about this all night. Jessica will remember faster if she comes to the pack lands. You know this."
"Mum—"
"She is not human. That girl is a werewolf. Even if something has happened to her wolf, the pack lands will stir something in her. It will feel familiar."
Kai closed his eyes for a moment, drawing on every ounce of patience he had left. Then he turned to face her fully.
