Three days had passed, and Jessica had not seen Kai for once. Not even a glimpse. It was ridiculous, she knew. She had been the one to tell him to leave her alone. He had only done what she asked.
But still, her eyes kept drifting toward the door of the restaurant every time it opened. Every time the handle turned, her head lifted, and a small, stupid part of her hoped it would be him, but it never was.
Part of her was convinced this was for the best. The man had upended her entire life in a matter of days. He had shown her photographs of a woman she didn't remember being, claimed she was his woman, and looked at her like she held the sun in her chest. Staying away from him was the only sensible thing.
But the other part of her—the part that kept turning toward that damn door—felt like something was missing.
She hated herself for feeling that way. She had asked for this. But did he have to take her words quite so literally?
