"Who is that?" Odelia whispered, her eyes wide with terror.
"That sounds like my boss," Jessica replied, but even as she said it, her voice carried no certainty.
"Your boss?" Odelia's whisper came out as more of a squeak. "You mean the Kai Mondragon? What in God's name is he doing here at this hour?"
Jessica shook her head slowly. "I don't know."
The knock came again, harder this time, more urgent. "Jessica, please. I just want to make sure you're fine."
Something in his voice pulled at her. Before she understood what she was doing, Jessica rose to her feet. Odelia grabbed her hand, trying to stop her, but Jessica gently pulled free. She did not understand why Kai was here, but the sound of him at her door had settled something in her chest, loosening the knot of fear that had been coiled there since she saw those eyes.
Odelia, still frozen by the kitchen doorway, reached for the nearest thing she could find—two china cups—and gripped them like weapons.
