Later that night, long after they had returned from the restaurant, Jessica lay in bed with the covers pulled up to her chin and her phone in her hand. Sleep had refused to come.
She had been lying there for over an hour, staring at the photographs in her phone.
She had zoomed in and out. Studied the ring on her finger. Studied the smile on her face. Studied the way her body leaned into Kai's.
But no matter how hard she tried, she could not remember a single moment from those images. They were photographs of a stranger who wore her face.
She knew this was no longer something she could deny. The evidence was too much and too precise. But how was she ever going to confront Sebastian? How could she look him in the eye and ask him if he had lied to her for three years?
Her throat felt dry. She gave up trying to sleep and pushed the covers aside and swung her legs over the edge of the bed. Water. She needed water, and maybe a few minutes away from her own spiralling thoughts.
