Nyssa's face fell. Her eyes did what now?
Zuleika knew her powers were trying to force their way out. But it wouldn't be comfortable for her. She needed to be where it would be monitored greatly and so she didn't waste time.
"We are going to the Chief now."
Nyssa stared, but said nothing more. She didn't think that anyone would listen to her.
Twenty minutes later, they were on their way to the Chief.
But as they passed by the streets, something was off. Nyssa felt it the moment they stepped beyond the clearing of the hut.
The air was thicker now. Like it was about to release something into the surroundings.
Like the trees themselves had shifted, leaning ever so slightly inward, watching her pass with silent curiosity. Or more worriedly, with suspicion.
She walked between Zuleika and Leilani, her steps slower than usual, and her gaze drifting constantly from one shadow to another.
The path beneath their feet was narrow, half-swallowed by roots and fallen leaves.
