Chapter 35 - Chapter 35 – The Dinner

March 22, 2026. Saturday evening.

The Takahashi house was traditional—low table, tatami mats, sliding doors. Smell of miso and grilled fish. Quiet. Controlled.

Akira wore a dark button-down and slacks. Sora wore a simple navy dress—knee-length, modest, hair half-up. She carried a small box of wagashi as a gift.

Akira's hand brushed hers before they rang the bell.

"Ready?"

Sora nodded. "Ready."

The door opened.

Akira's mother—elegant, composed, kimono-style blouse. Father—stern, suit even at home.

"Welcome."

Formal bows.

They removed shoes. Entered.

Dinner was served—perfect portions, silent eating at first.

Mother spoke. "Hayashi Sora. You performed well at the festival. The video was… striking."

Sora smiled politely. "Thank you. It was a team effort."

Father set his chopsticks down. "Team effort. Yet the focus was on the two of you. Very… intimate."

Akira's hand tensed under the table.

Sora kept her voice even. "The script required emotional contrast. We sold the theme."

Mother's eyes narrowed. "And off-stage? The hand-holding. The smiles. The kiss on the cheek in the courtyard photos."

Sora's cheeks warmed. "We're together."

Father's tone sharpened. "Together. At a time when Akira should be focused on university entrance exams. On his future."

Akira spoke—quiet but firm. "She doesn't distract me. She motivates me."

Mother looked at Sora. "And your plans? Tokyo scholarship. You turned it down?"

Sora nodded. "I did."

"Why?"

Sora met her gaze. "Because staying here—finishing what I started with Akira—was more important than a fresh start."

Father's voice was cold. "Sentiment over opportunity."

Sora's voice stayed steady. "Sometimes opportunity looks like the person beside you."

Silence.

Mother spoke softly. "You are aware Akira's future is planned. Tokyo University. Prestigious program. No distractions."

Sora's hand found Akira's under the table—squeezed.

"I'm not a distraction. I'm his partner."

Akira's grip tightened.

Father exhaled. "We have sacrificed much for his success. We cannot allow sentiment to derail it."

Akira spoke—voice low, but clear. "Then you'll have to accept that I'm choosing my own success. With her."

The room went still.

Mother's eyes widened.

Father's jaw tightened. "You would choose her over your family?"

Akira's voice cracked—just once. "I'm not choosing against you. I'm choosing for me. And she is part of me now."

Sora's eyes filled.

Mother looked away.

Father stood. "Dinner is over."

Akira stood too—bowed deeply.

"Thank you for the meal."

He took Sora's hand—openly now.

They left.

In the genkan, Sora whispered, "You okay?"

Akira nodded. "I will be."

They stepped outside.

The night air was cold.

Sora hugged him—tight.

Akira held her—stronger.

They walked home—hand in hand.

Silent.
