Chapter 41 - Chapter 41 – Graduation Ceremony

April 18, 2026. Graduation day.

The school gymnasium was filled with cherry blossoms—real ones pinned to uniforms, paper ones on the stage. Third-years in formal uniforms, parents in the back rows, teachers on the platform.

Sora sat in her row—heart full, eyes misty.

Akira sat two seats away—spine straight, but hand brushing hers under the chair when no one looked.

The principal's speech was long—about futures, dreams, responsibility.

Sora whispered to Akira, "He's talking about us."

Akira's mouth twitched. "He's talking about everyone."

"But mostly us."

The diplomas were called.

When Sora's name was announced, Akira clapped—louder than necessary.

When Akira's name was called, Sora whistled—sharp, proud.

Parents noticed.

Akira's mother and father sat in the back—faces neutral, but eyes sharp.

Sora's parents sat nearby—smiling, waving.

After the ceremony, the courtyard was chaos—photos, hugs, tears.

Mai tackled Sora. "You're graduating! And going to Tokyo U with your boyfriend! Life goals!"

Sora laughed. "He's not my boyfriend. He's… Akira."

Mai rolled her eyes. "Same thing."

Akira approached—formal, polite.

Sora's mother hugged him. "We're so proud of both of you."

Akira bowed. "Thank you."

Akira's parents approached—slow, measured.

Father spoke first. "Congratulations, Akira. And… Hayashi-san."

Sora bowed. "Thank you."

Mother's smile was tight. "Tokyo U. Both of you."

Sora nodded. "Yes."

Mother looked at Akira. "We'll discuss this later."

Akira met her gaze. "There's nothing to discuss. She's coming with me."

Father's jaw tightened.

They left—without another word.

Sora squeezed Akira's hand.

He squeezed back.

Later—after photos, after goodbyes—they slipped away to the rooftop.

Same spot.

Sora leaned against the fence. "Your parents hate me."

Akira stood behind her—arms around her waist.

"They don't hate you. They're scared."

Sora leaned back into him. "Of what?"

"Of losing control. Of me choosing something other than their plan."

Sora turned in his arms. "And you chose me."

Akira cupped her face. "I choose you every day."

Sora rose on tiptoes—kissed him softly.

He kissed her back—deep, certain.

When they pulled apart, Sora whispered, "We're really doing this. Tokyo. Together."

Akira smiled—rare, full. "Together."

They stayed on the roof—watching the sunset.

Graduation was over.

The rest of their lives were beginning.
