Hermione squinted at him. "Shouldn't I know? It's universal common knowledge!"
Fury: "..."
Sorry. My bad for being ignorant.
He knew about the Kree. But over a decade ago, when he was just an ordinary S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, he'd only glimpsed the universe's vastness after that incident with Carol.
He wouldn't tell Hermione any of this.
Hermione's internal monologue: You think I don't know?
Next, he showed her several more items. She answered every one.
Fury's mood improved considerably.
Worth it. Every investment in Miss Witch pays off. She's a walking encyclopedia!
Without realizing when it started, he'd developed the same mindset as certain others:
When in doubt, ask Hermione!
Before leaving, Fury gazed longingly at Goose perched obediently on Hermione's shoulder.
Until her figure vanished, the cat never looked back once.
Betrayed!
Leaving S.H.I.E.L.D.
Dusk had fallen. Hermione walked the streets, contemplating future moves.
Passing an alley, she suddenly stopped.
Looked around. Somehow, the street was empty. An eerie atmosphere crept in.
BANG!
A gunshot shattered the night's silence.
CLANG!
A spherical shield enveloped Hermione. A bullet clattered to the ground.
"Lumos Maxima!"
The night sky brightened. Hermione spotted armed mercenaries surrounding her.
Blinded by the intense light, the nearest ones collapsed, ripped off night-vision goggles, clutched their eyes, screaming.
"We're made! All units, attack!"
A shout crackled through radios. More armed personnel rushed toward her. Drones swarmed overhead, guns trained on Hermione.
Seeing the transparent shield, the leader's eyes flashed with shock.
"Fire!"
Countless muzzles erupted. Crackling, popping.
But bullets hitting the transparent barrier only created faint ripples. No sign of breaking.
Hermione snorted.
Please. Back at Lv2, the Shield Charm withstood missile force... Now at Lv3, mere bullets?
"Impossible!"
The armed personnel cried out.
Before coming, they'd been told they might face an enhanced individual... but learning it was a young girl, none took her seriously.
Large assault team. Overwhelming firepower. Drone support.
Enhanced? So what?
Yet the scene before them defied belief.
"Keep firing! That shield can't last forever!"
Watching Hermione stand leisurely, expression unchanged, the leader gritted his teeth. "RPG!"
Multiple trails of fire streaked from rooftops, converging on Hermione.
BOOM!
Several RPGs exploded around her.
Personnel ceased fire. Slowly approached.
Smoke gradually cleared.
Hermione's figure emerged. Not a scratch. Not even dusty.
Eyes bulged. For a moment, forgot to shoot.
Though Hermione could ignore their firepower, passive defense was never her style.
"Confringo!"
BOOM!
A massive fireball erupted among the crowd. Surrounding personnel were thrown by the explosion.
More powerful than an RPG!
But this was just the beginning.
Hermione's wand traced arcs.
"Diffindo!"
"Confringo!"
"Incendio!"
"Ventus!"
Fire, explosions, gales, debris wove through the battlefield. Hermione unleashed various spells in all directions.
Her heart soared.
For so long, she'd been restrained. Never had the chance to unleash freely. But she'd always hoped for this opportunity.
Didn't expect it to come so soon.
Only when the chaos faded—only one person left standing—did Hermione stop.
Feeling energy flood her body, she felt satisfied.
Combat. Exhilarating!
The sole survivor collapsed on the ground. Looked at her with terror.
Hermione slowly approached. Each step deliberate.
"No! Don't come closer!"
The man was clearly terrified. Waved his hands wildly.
"Fine. I won't come. You come here instead."
Hermione stopped. Then a spell yanked him over.
Looking at the man hovering before her, Hermione noticed the emblem on his chest.
Ten Rings?
Why would they attack her?
If revenge, they should target Tony. Unless... because she'd been with Pepper lately?
"Who are you? Why—actually, I'll just look myself."
Watching him babble incoherently, Hermione gave up interrogation.
"Legilimens!"
Her consciousness plunged into his mind.
Countless images flashed past. His entire life.
Moments later, Hermione opened her eyes. Finally understood.
Ten Rings? No.
These were S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel. Or rather—HYDRA in disguise!
Efficient. Morning lecture, afternoon assassination attempt.
Disguised as Ten Rings—so if the mission failed, they could blame terrorists.
They were still deeply hidden. Could only operate under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s cover.
Couldn't make big moves. Risk alerting Fury.
Too bad they misjudged her strength. Underestimated her defenses.
A final spell sent the last man off. Hermione turned to leave.
Then—a faint disturbance in the air behind her.
Suddenly, a syringe materialized—stabbing toward her neck!
