Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Healthy Fennekin

With some time left before the physical exam ended, Link opened his book and sat in the central hall, lost in thought, beginning today's simulation.

[Restart]—Omitted.

[Knowing that Senior Tominaga had said there were monsters and ghosts in the school building, you still insisted on splitting up—what a bunch of undisciplined people! So you immediately stopped everyone and suggested we all go together.]

[The problem is that Senior Aoi is missing and could be in danger at any moment. The school building is too big; going together is safe, but too cumbersome.]

[After carefully considering your suggestion, Takuma thinks it's better to split into pairs. Takuma and Minoru are in one group, and you and Labramon are in another.]

[But then you smiled crookedly, "Senior Tominaga, you don't want to be alone and have a random monster break down the door and pierce your chest, do you?"]

[Tominaga joined the team!]

[Although Kunimon's strength is quite subtle, with the assistance of Labramon, after teaming up with Tominaga, you started a righteous bullying mode, and your battles against the wandering monsters were invincible.]

[With your Fennekin—being identified by the system as the Data-type Fennekin—the Virus-type Kunimon, and the Vaccine-type Labramon working together, they can handle even enemies of equal or greater numbers.]

[Unfortunately, your search of the school building was fruitless.]

[Fortunately, after meeting up with Takuma and Minoru at the agreed time, you learned that they had discovered a ghost lurking in the school building in the music room. From the ghost, you learned about the Dokugumon (Spidermon) that was lurking in the gymnasium.]

[Upon hearing this, Labramon immediately wanted to rescue Shibuya Aoi. You also felt that delaying any longer would be disastrous, and you had to defeat the Spidermon tonight.]

[The group headed to the gym, but you couldn't help feeling uneasy. Could five Rookie-level monsters defeat one Champion-level one?]

[Even Spidermon had quite a few subordinates. Although your Foxmon was strong, it was a Data-type monster that Spidermon was weak against, and could only clean up the small fry on the periphery.]

[Agumon, Falcomon, and Labramon had a species advantage, but this advantage was unlikely to bridge the gap between the two sides.]

[Although you wanted to devise a strategy, you had no ideas and could only bite the bullet and go for it.]

Link thought to himself, "I know this all too well. This must be a battle evolution tactic, right? Takuma Momozuka, hurry up and bring out your Divine Plan!"

[A few minutes later, the group arrived at the gymnasium sealed off by spider webs. You discovered that the unconscious Aoi Shibuya was trapped in the web behind Spidermon.]

[Labramon immediately went berserk, and a battle was about to break out.]

[The two approached an unusually large spider-beast, filling everyone with fear. It even had three normal-sized spider-beasts as its subordinates. But Takuma mustered his courage and went first.]

"How are we supposed to fight this? Five Rookie-level monsters against four Champion-level monsters?"

[Labramon overextended and was killed by the leader spider-beast's "Piercing Poison Needle," dissipating into data.]

"..."

[An anomaly occurred. With Labramon's death, Aoi-senpai also vanished into light. The sudden change left the students bewildered. Their escape route was blocked by the spider-beast.]

[Those who had lost the will to fight were successively killed. Although you were determined to kill, Foxmon was truly no match for the spider-beast.]

[Sorry, we couldn't force the spider-beast to use its full power. You were all wiped out.]

[Simulation ended. You received 200 coins, 200 bits, and 1 Guardian Crystal.]

[Guardian Crystal: Increases the target's defense. The hexagonal pattern looks like a shield.]

Looking at the simulation results, Link felt inexplicably heartbroken. Five Rookie-level Digimon versus four Champion-level Digimon—how could they possibly win without overwhelming the opponent's level?

The only saving grace was that they seemed to have defeated some wandering Digimon and obtained some resources. Link took out a Guardian Crystal from his system inventory. After equipping Pokemon with the Guardian Crystal, Link continued to equip himself with the Learning Crystal.

When the latter was equipped, the character interface displayed: [Intelligence +2 Enhancement]. As long as it was equipped, his mind would become very sharp. Bit also reached 700 in the process.

"Trainer Kobayashi, your Fennekin's physical examination is over."

Kobayashi? It took Link half a minute to realize that they were talking about him. He immediately put down his book and went to the front desk to retrieve the slightly bored and sleepy Fennekin.

"Congratulations, this is a very healthy and energetic Fire Fox," Nurse Joy said with a genuine smile. "Although we don't have Fennekin's birth data, its overall qualities are already close to the most talented Torchic Pokémon."

"Hmm, I'm satisfied as long as it's healthy." Link reached out and rubbed Fennekin's shiny black nose. "Wake up, little one. Let's eat."

"Fennekin!" The Fire Fox instantly became energetic, as if it had just chewed on a twig.
