Chapter 33: Dangerous Games
(Keifer's POV)
The warehouse we moved to after capturing the sniper was quieter than the shipyard.
Old concrete walls.
Broken lights.
A single long table in the middle where Savannah and Sophia were already working.
The sniper sat tied to a chair in the corner with Amy guarding him like an excited guard dog.
Amy:
"If he tries anything I'm punching him again."
Sniper:
"You already punched me four times."
Amy:
"Exactly."
Aries laughed loudly from across the room.
Kuya Angelo was talking with Olivia and Mia about security routes.
Everyone was busy.
Everyone except Jay.
And me.
Jay stood near the large window overlooking the harbor.
Moonlight spilled across her shoulders, outlining her figure in silver.
She looked calm again.
Focused.
Back in her leader mode.
But my brain kept replaying what happened on the rooftop.
Her whisper.
"That counts as compensation."
Yeah.
No.
We were definitely not done with that conversation.
I walked toward her slowly.
Jay noticed immediately.
Of course she did.
Her instincts were too sharp not to.
Jay Jay:
"You're staring again."
Keifer:
"You're suspicious again."
Jay Jay:
"I'm always suspicious."
I leaned against the wall beside her.
Keifer:
"You owe me."
Jay sighed dramatically.
Jay Jay:
"Still on that?"
Keifer:
"Yes."
Jay Jay:
"You're impossible."
I lowered my voice slightly.
Keifer:
"You hid an entire secret life from me."
Jay Jay:
"I had good reasons."
Keifer:
"You did."
Jay Jay:
"Then why are you still complaining?"
I leaned closer.
Close enough that she had to tilt her head slightly to look at me.
Keifer:
"Because punishment is still required."
Jay blinked.
Jay Jay:
"Punishment?"
She crossed her arms.
Jay Jay:
"You're enjoying this way too much."
Keifer:
"Absolutely."
Jay tilted her head, studying me.
Jay Jay:
"You're not actually mad."
Keifer:
"I said I'm a little mad."
Jay Jay:
"Liar."
I smirked.
Keifer:
"Maybe."
The distance between us shrank again.
Jay didn't step away.
Which was interesting.
Very interesting.
Keifer:
"You know what's funny?"
Jay Jay:
"What?"
Keifer:
"You've been running a secret organization."
Jay Jay:
"Yes."
Keifer:
"Planning missions."
Jay Jay:
"Yes."
Keifer:
"Beating up criminals."
Jay Jay:
"Yes."
I leaned even closer.
Keifer:
"And yet you still look nervous right now."
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
Jay Jay:
"I'm not nervous."
Keifer:
"You are."
Jay Jay:
"No."
I smiled slowly.
Keifer:
"You're nervous because you don't know what the punishment is."
Jay rolled her eyes.
Jay Jay:
"You're so dramatic."
Keifer:
"You like dramatic."
She exhaled slowly.
Jay Jay:
"Fine."
Then she leaned forward slightly.
Jay Jay:
"What's the punishment?"
Her voice was quiet.
Almost teasing.
I didn't answer immediately.
I just watched her for a moment.
Then said softly—
Keifer:
"You'll see."
She groaned.
Jay Jay:
"That's not helpful."
Behind us Aries shouted.
Aries:
"HEY!"
Aries:
"If you two start flirting again I'm leaving."
Amy shouted back.
Amy:
"Don't interrupt them!"
Jay sighed.
Jay Jay:
"This is embarrassing."
Keifer:
"You started it."
Jay Jay:
"I did not."
I gently caught her wrist before she could walk away.
Not tight.
Just enough to stop her.
Jay looked down at my hand.
Then back at me.
Jay Jay:
"Keifer."
Keifer:
"Yes?"
Jay Jay:
"People are watching."
I glanced behind us.
Everyone was very obviously pretending not to watch.
Aries even turned around dramatically.
Keifer:
"They're not watching."
Jay Jay:
"They are."
I shrugged.
Keifer:
"Let them."
Jay shook her head slightly.
Jay Jay:
"You're impossible."
But she didn't pull her hand away.
Instead she stepped closer.
Lowering her voice.
Jay Jay:
"You're enjoying this."
Keifer:
"Yes."
Jay Jay:
"Why?"
I leaned toward her ear slightly.
Keifer:
"Because the scary leader of the Obsidian Circle is suddenly acting shy."
Jay immediately pushed my shoulder.
Jay Jay:
"I am not shy."
I laughed quietly.
Keifer:
"You are right now."
Jay Jay:
"I'm not."
Keifer:
"You definitely are."
Her cheeks turned slightly pink.
Which made me grin even more.
Jay Jay:
"Stop smiling like that."
Keifer:
"Like what?"
Jay Jay:
"Like you're winning."
I leaned closer again.
Keifer:
"I am winning."
She narrowed her eyes.
Jay Jay:
"Dangerous assumption."
Then suddenly she stepped even closer.
Now we were almost chest to chest.
Jay Jay:
"You forget something."
Keifer:
"What?"
Jay Jay:
"I'm the dangerous one."
I smiled slowly.
Keifer:
"I know."
The moment hung between us again.
Quiet.
Charged.
Then Savannah's voice broke the tension.
Savannah:
"Hey lovebirds."
Savannah:
"We found something."
Jay immediately switched back into leader mode.
She pulled away and walked to the table.
Jay Jay:
"What is it?"
Savannah turned the tablet.
Savannah:
"Another contract."
Sophia added calmly.
Sophia:
"And this one is bigger."
Kuya Angelo frowned.
Kuya Angelo:
"How big?"
Sophia zoomed the screen.
Sophia:
"International."
The room went silent.
Jay looked at the file.
Then at me.
Jay Jay:
"They're escalating."
I leaned against the table.
Keifer:
"Good."
Jay Jay:
"Good?"
Keifer:
"Yes."
I smirked slightly.
Keifer:
"Because now both our gangs get to work together."
Amy grinned.
Amy:
"Team chaos."
Aries nodded.
Aries:
"I like team chaos."
Jay looked at everyone.
Then nodded slowly.
Jay Jay:
"Alright."
Jay Jay:
"Then we finish this together."
But when she glanced back at me…
Her expression changed slightly again.
That quiet challenge in her eyes.
And I realized something.
The "punishment" conversation was definitely not over.
Not even close.
Because if there was one thing I learned tonight…
It was that Jay Jay liked dangerous games.
And I was more than happy to play.
