Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: The Royal Flame Domain — Zhao Lianhua’s Wrath

Night hadn't fallen yet, but the battlefield outside Ashenfall already looked like dusk had claimed it early. Demon banners stretched across the plains like a dark ocean, five hundred thousand strong, an army large enough to swallow kingdoms whole if given the room to do it.

War drums thundered through the air like distant earthquakes, each beat echoing through the bones of every defender still standing along the wall. Fear had begun spreading again despite yesterday's warning giving them a full day to prepare for it.

But the demons weren't the only ones getting ready.

At the highest tower of the Proud Family compound, Zhao Lianhua stood with her crimson robes moving gently in the wind, faint flame dancing around her body like something alive and restless. Below her, hundreds of elite flame cultivators from her family's forces waited in silence, and even among that gathered strength, she stood apart the way the sun stands apart from candles.

An elder spoke carefully from below. "Princess, the demon army has begun its advance formations."

She didn't turn. "I know."

"The Beast Queen has requested all sect forces prepare for the first clash."

Finally she moved, turning slowly, her eyes burning like molten gold. "I didn't come here to prepare." She stepped forward toward the tower's edge. "I came here to burn demons."

Outside the walls, the first wave of the actual third tide had begun moving — thirty thousand demons marching ahead of the main army, corrupted beasts roaring, massive bone-armored ogres dragging siege engines across the churned dirt. Flying demons circled above in patient formation, waiting like carrion birds for something to finish dying below them.

Three demon generals led the advance, each radiating pressure heavy enough to feel from the wall. Their orders were simple enough to guess without needing confirmation. Test the city's defenses. Break morale. Spill whatever blood the opening exchange allowed.

The vanguard surged forward across the plain.

Han Yueqing watched them approach, his sword vibrating faintly in his grip. "Thirty thousand," he said, grinning. "Finally, something interesting."

Lin Tianren stood beside him, his Dragon Heart Core pulsing calmly beneath his ribs. His eyes weren't on the demons, though. They were on the sky, tracking a shift in the air temperature that had nothing to do with the approaching army.

A pillar of crimson fire exploded upward from within the city without warning, shooting into the sky like something volcanic finally finding release. Every soldier on the wall turned to watch it climb. Even the demons paused mid-advance at the sight of it.

The flames spiraled higher until they reached the clouds themselves, then spread outward like wings unfolding, a burning sun rising directly over the battlefield.

Han laughed softly. "There she goes."

Zhao Lianhua stepped forward out of the burning sky, not falling but walking, each footstep leaving a trail of fire suspended beneath her. Her hair floated like living flame around her face, her eyes carrying the particular authority that came from bloodline rather than mere cultivation.

She stopped hovering high above the approaching vanguard. One demon general looked up and sneered. "A human girl?"

Another growled beside him. "She dares challenge the demon army alone?"

Her voice descended over them like a decree rather than a response. "You're mistaken." Her aura exploded outward across the plain. "I'm not alone."

She raised one hand, flame expanding rapidly around her. "I carry the authority of the Proud Royal Flame Bloodline."

The sky itself trembled at the declaration.

A massive circular formation ignited across the clouds, flame symbols burning like ancient runes suspended in the air. The atmosphere itself began to burn faintly at the edges of the formation.

"Royal Flame Domain," she said, and the world changed around the words.

A colossal sphere of crimson fire expanded outward across the battlefield, hundreds of meters wide within seconds, then thousands, the temperature surging violently as it swallowed the entire demon vanguard whole.

The flames weren't ordinary fire. They carried royal bloodline authority behind their heat, and demon soldiers screamed as their armor melted directly onto their skin. Corrupted beasts collapsed as their own flesh burned from the inside out. Flying demons dropped from the sky like burning meteors, their formations dissolving into chaos within the domain's boundary.

The fire didn't simply burn what it touched. It hunted, precise in a way ordinary flame never managed, and every demon caught inside it felt the same unmistakable sensation settle over them.

Judgment, arriving without appeal.

One general roared, slamming his weapon into the ground hard enough to send a shockwave through the burning domain. The flames didn't disperse under it. They intensified instead.

Zhao Lianhua's eyes stayed cold, watching the failed attempt. "You think demon strength can challenge royal fire?" She closed her hand slightly, and the flames tightened around the trapped vanguard, compressing inward like a collapsing star. Thousands of demons burned in the same instant, ash filling the air like black snow drifting over the battlefield.

The three generals leading the vanguard weren't weak, though, and they unleashed their full power in response. Dark demonic energy erupted violently around them — one transforming into a massive horned beast, another summoning a storm of shadow blades, the third releasing poisonous mist across the domain's boundary.

The battlefield shook under the combined resistance. Zhao Lianhua didn't retreat from it. Her flames grew brighter instead.

"You came here to slaughter humans," she said, her voice carrying across the entire field. "Then burn instead."

She thrust one hand downward, and a massive sphere of condensed fire formed above the domain, looking almost like a miniature sun suspended in the sky. The heat distorted the air even at this distance, cultivators on the wall feeling the temperature spike despite standing well outside the domain's actual reach.

Han Yueqing whistled low. "That woman is insane."

Lin Tianren stayed silent, his eyes sharp on the display unfolding above the battlefield. This wasn't simply power on display. This was royal authority made physical, and he understood the distinction clearly enough to know it mattered.

"Royal Sunfall," she said, and released it.

The fire sphere crashed into what remained of the demon vanguard, the resulting explosion blinding even from the wall's distance. Flame devoured everything still standing within the domain's boundary, the shockwave rolling outward across the battlefield like a hurricane finding new ground to tear through.

When the firestorm finally faded, the plains sat in complete silence. Where thirty thousand demons had marched only minutes earlier, only blackened earth and drifting ash remained.

And three figures, barely still standing. The demon generals, burned and wounded but alive, their eyes carrying nothing but rage at what had just been done to their army.

Above them, Zhao Lianhua floated calmly, flame still dancing around her like a crown she hadn't bothered to remove.

One general roared, launching himself upward toward her. "You arrogant human! Die!"

Before he reached her, a sword flash intercepted him mid-air. Han Yueqing had stepped forward from the wall, his blade humming with barely restrained energy.

"Sorry," he said, smiling casually despite the weight of what he'd just interrupted. "That fight looked like too much fun to skip."

Far away, on the demon command ridge, Var'Khal watched the burning plains with an expression that stayed calm despite the loss unfolding in front of him. His violet eyes gleamed with something closer to interest than concern.

"Royal Flame Domain," he said quietly. "So the Proud Family's princess has finally arrived in person."

A general beside him asked carefully, "Commander, should we send reinforcements?"

Var'Khal shook his head. "No." He looked toward the city walls, toward Lin Tianren's distant figure, then back toward Zhao Lianhua's burning silhouette. "Let them show their full strength."

His smile carried nothing warm in it. "The stronger the resistance," he said, "the more satisfying the eventual collapse."

Lin Tianren watched the battlefield in silence as the flames slowly faded, the sky above the ruined vanguard still glowing faint red. But the war had only just begun tonight, whatever this opening exchange had cost the demons.

Behind the destroyed vanguard, the main army continued its advance regardless of the loss, hundreds of thousands of soldiers still moving forward in formation that seemed to stretch endlessly across the darkening plain.

The Beast Queen stepped beside him. "The third wave has started properly now."

He nodded slowly, his Dragon Heart Core pulsing steady beneath his ribs. The sky above the battlefield still carried the afterglow of Zhao Lianhua's flame, but beyond it, further out where the main army waited, darkness had already begun gathering again.

[Time Remaining — Primary Clock: 1 Day]

The real war, whatever tonight's opening exchange had actually meant, was only beginning in earnest.
