Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Sovereign Dragon Manifestation

The battlefield had become a graveyard. Black demon blood soaked the cracked earth across the plains outside Ashenfall, thousands of corpses scattered where the fighting had passed through them.

At the center of it, Lin Tianren stood with his golden sword still in hand, the nine-tailed fox beside him, both of them surrounded now by eight demon generals forming a tight circle around them. Their combined auras crushed the battlefield like collapsing mountains, each one Gold Rank, each one individually capable of leveling a city on their own.

Even the wind seemed reluctant to move through the pressure they carried.

One general stepped forward first, a towering demon with obsidian horns and burning red eyes, his armor built from bone plates harvested off fallen beasts. His voice rumbled like distant thunder.

"You slaughtered twenty thousand of our soldiers." His demonic energy expanded outward violently as he spoke. "But the game ends here."

Another laughed beside him. "Humans always overestimate themselves. Eight against one. Let's see how long that arrogance actually lasts."

Behind them, the remaining demon army roared its approval, the sky darkening further as demonic energy thickened across the entire field.

Lin Tianren didn't step back from any of it. He raised his head slowly, golden pupils flickering faintly, his Dragon Heart Core pulsing once, then twice beneath his ribs.

The combined pressure of eight Gold Rank auras crashed down on him like an avalanche. His knees bent slightly under the weight of it, the ground cracking beneath his feet.

He remained standing regardless. Calm. Watching.

Three generals attacked simultaneously without further warning — one smashing the ground with a colossal iron hammer, another unleashing a storm of black flame, the third moving faster than lightning with claws aimed directly at his throat.

Three Gold Rank attacks landing at once, more than enough force to annihilate an entire army standing in the wrong place. The battlefield exploded under the combined impact, ash and fire filling the sky, and for a moment Lin Tianren disappeared entirely inside the destruction.

The demon army roared in triumph at the sight. The generals themselves didn't celebrate with them. They felt something inside the settling smoke that gave them pause instead.

Something was growing there, rather than fading the way it should have.

Deep within his spiritual sea, the Dragon Heart Core trembled violently, golden energy surging through his meridians hard enough that his body felt like it was tearing apart from the inside. The ancient bloodline reacted to the overwhelming pressure the way it always seemed to when pushed past reasonable limits.

A voice echoed inside his mind, ancient and vast and cold. You stand against eight kings of war.

The colossal golden dragon appeared again within his spiritual sea, its eyes burning like small suns. Human. Will you break?

He clenched his fists, blood flowing freely from the corners of his mouth. Outside, the demon attacks continued crashing down around him, his bones groaning under the accumulated strain.

His gaze stayed steady despite it. "No."

The dragon's eyes narrowed. Then show me. Show me why a mortal carries the blood of a sovereign.

His will surged in response, the Dragon Heart Core igniting fully, golden light erupting through every meridian at once.

"Then watch," he said, and meant it.

The explosion on the battlefield changed shape rather than fading the way three combined Gold Rank strikes should have finished it. It expanded instead, golden light erupting outward like a rising sun, the eight generals staggering backward in genuine shock at the sight.

From within the collapsing smoke, a massive dragon roar echoed across the entire battlefield — not sound exactly, but authority made audible, the sky itself trembling under the weight of it.

A colossal golden dragon silhouette appeared behind Lin Tianren, hundreds of meters long, its body formed entirely from spiritual energy, its eyes ancient and considerably more terrifying than anything the generals had faced tonight. Its presence alone crushed the surrounding battlefield flat.

He stepped out of the smoke slowly, golden dragon scales flickering faintly along his arms and neck, his eyes glowing like molten gold now rather than their usual color. The phantom dragon moved with him as he walked, breathing in rhythm with him, watching the battlefield through the same gaze he was.

On the city wall, Han Yueqing burst out laughing at the sight. "Well now. That looks like fun."

Zhao Lianhua's eyes narrowed. "So he finally awakened it fully."

The Beast Queen stood silently beside them both, but for the first time since this war had reached Ashenfall's walls, her expression carried unmistakable approval.

Even the wider demon army stopped moving entirely, the pressure from the dragon manifestation overwhelming enough that soldiers stepped backward on pure instinct. Bloodlines recognized authority when it appeared this clearly, and this authority was ancient in a way that predated most of what stood on either side of this battlefield.

One general snarled. "Impossible. A human cannot manifest dragon authority."

Lin Tianren raised the Golden Heaven Sword slowly, the phantom dragon behind him mirroring the movement exactly, golden lightning crackling across the battlefield in response.

"I never claimed to be ordinary," he said.

One general roared in rage and charged forward, his demonic aura exploding to its maximum output. "I'll crush you myself!"

He swung a massive axe downward, a weapon built to split mountains rather than merely armor. Lin Tianren stepped forward once to meet it, the dragon behind him moving in perfect unison.

His sword flashed, golden light crossing the battlefield like a falling star. For a moment, nothing visibly happened.

Then the demon general simply stopped moving. A thin golden line appeared across his chest, his eyes widening a half-second before his body split cleanly in half along the cut.

The battlefield fell completely silent. A Gold Rank demon general, killed in a single strike, something none of the surrounding army had believed possible from anything short of another Gold Rank cultivator committing everything they had to the exchange.

The remaining seven generals stepped back instinctively, disbelief written openly across every one of their expressions.

"This is impossible," one whispered.

Lin Tianren's dragon aura expanded again in response, his voice carrying calmly across the entire battlefield despite how little effort it took to project it this far.

"Seven left."

The demon army trembled visibly at the count.

Far away, Demon Commander Var'Khal finally rose from where he'd been observing the battle unfold, his violet eyes gleaming with something that had shifted well past simple interest now.

"So the dragon awakens fully," he said, a slow smile spreading across his face.

"Good," he added, to no one but the empty ridge around him.

Because now, from where he was standing, the real war could finally begin properly.
