Chapter 29 - Thank You

The moment the door was pushed open, everyone present inside turned in their direction.

Police personnel from different departments had been ordered to rush back to the headquarters and wait in this room because someone from the victim's family wished to meet them.

While this seemed excessive to them, they had no choice but to obey the orders they had received.

Therefore, this group of over ten individuals had been waiting in this room for the last few minutes, expressing their impatience and annoyance every few seconds at being called back.

They were waiting to see just who it was who wished to meet them all.

However, nothing had prepared them to see the Commissioner of Police walking into the room right behind the detective who had summoned them.

This sight made them stand at attention as they soon greeted the older man who held a prestigious position and was well-respected by everyone in here.

Their gaze soon fell on the young lady and the two young men who followed him into the room.

While they had met these men on a few occasions during their investigation, the young lady was someone they were seeing for the first time.

'So she must have wanted to meet us...' Everyone reached the same conclusion upon seeing her enter the room.

If their earlier annoyance had dimmed with the Commissioner's presence, then the sight of this pretty young lady made it disappear altogether.

Who would not like seeing beautiful people, and this young lady was a beauty without a doubt.

Therefore, their frustration faded away and they were now waiting to hear what the young lady had to say to them.

However, even after waiting for a few moments, they did not hear her voice, which made them stare at her, wondering what thee reason behind her silence was.

Instead of hearing her speak, they saw how she ignored them and turned her attention toward one of the men who had accompanied her into the room.

This man scanned the entire room with his narrowed eyes and then stopped at her once again before he shook his head with a look of dismay.

A soft sigh escaped her lips before she nodded in response to this silent conversation that had just taken place between the two.

"Let's go..." She announced, and in the next second, she turned on her heels and left the room, leaving the rest behind, stunned and speechless at what had just taken place.

This young lady had called them here, making them leave all of their assignments and head back for her, yet she did not even bother uttering a single word to them before she left.

That feeling of frustration which had faded earlier had now returned with a vengeance as they glared at the back of the young lady who had already walked out of the room before they could process what had just happened.

Not just the young lady but even the man who had been conversing with her through his eyes earlier also soon followed in her footsteps without giving them another glance.

"Thank you for your hard work!" The other man, the last of that group, spoke up in an attempt to ease the sudden unrest that arose due to the departure of of the first two.

Sadly, his appreciative words fell on deaf ears as they glared at him.

Not knowing what else to say, this man too hurried out of the room, but not before shooting an apologetic smile towards the detective who had summoned them here.

With this group of three disappearing from their sight, the Commissioner and the detective were the only ones left in the room with an angry mob of police personnel who felt disrespected by the lack of courtesy they were granted earlier.

"Don't mind them..." The Commissioner cleared his throat and tried to ease the tension that Nita and her cousins had created among his people.

"They called us here only for a lousy thanks?" A short brunette stepped forward and expressed both her doubt and confusion.

'I should have expected something like this would happen whenever she is involved...' Mikhayel let out a loud sigh as he had forgotten Nita's extremely abhorrent people skills, which only seemed to have gotten worse during the time she had been away from home.

At least when she was with her family, her mother would make sure that she was polite and courteous with the people around her.

However, it seemed that she had tossed aside all of her mother's lessons about interacting with others after she had left home.

Not having any way of explaining this to these officers, Mikhayel had to come up with a way to appease them.

While he could just order them not to fuss over the little details and get back to work, he did not wish to do so as that would make him look like a tyrannical boss who enforced his thoughts on his subordinates.

Therefore, he soon thought of what would help ease the tension now bubbling in this room.

"As a token of appreciation, everyone here will receive a bonus for their hard work this month." He announced and saw the instant shift in their expressions, which transformed from fury to surprise and excitement.

Soon, they forgot all about Nita's hasty exit and were now discussing what the bonus amount would actually be.

Seeing that he had managed to calm the storm, Commissioner Mikhayel nodded at the detective, reminding him of their earlier interaction, before he too left this room.

With their superior gone, the remaining officers were quick to engage in animated debate on how much they should expect this month.

However, only two individuals were not a part of this discussion as they stood next to each other.

"You think he can do that?" Detective Mulligan muttered to the brunette who had voiced out her question to the Commissioner earlier.

The brunette woman, who was in her early thirties, appeared shorter than she really was when she stood next to the tall and muscular man, but she understood what he was talking about.

Sam was wondering whether the Commissioner could announce that they would receive a bonus, just like that, without any prior approval from the HR department.

"He's the Commissioner, Sam. He can do anything he wants!" Mariya Johannes, another detective and his partner at work, scoffed at his naive inquiry.

"As long as it is legal..." She soon added, as her earlier words could be easily misunderstood by those who did not know the flawless character of their Commissioner.

'Legal...' Detective Sam's mind went back to the conversation he had with the Commissioner back in the conference room.

'Does he really have evidence to prove that Anita Valken was not involved in her brother's disappearance...?' He wondered as he stared at the door through which the Commissioner had left.

He also recalled how the old man had gestured at him right before he left.

"I will be right back!" Detective Sam announced as he hurried out the door, following after the old man who should not have made it too far after leaving the room.

"Wait! Where are you rushing off to!?" His partner yelled after him, confused at his sudden departure.

However, he did not show any signs of slowing down and instead increased his pace.

"I'll let you know once I'm back!" Sam yelled back as he too finally disappeared from her sight as he turned around the same corner as the Commissioner had just a moment ago.
