Chapter 28 - Moral Dilemma

Nita was right in thinking so, as the moment Mikhayel Osbourne had indeed rushed over to the conference room upon hearing that she was at the headquarters.

His assistant had informed him that the detective handling Detrim's case was gathering all of the personnel who had been at the crime scene and asking them to return to the Headquarters.

Initially, he was annoyed that precious police resources would be wasted in doing so.

However, upon inquiring further, he was told that the youngsters of the Valken family had arrived to meet the detective and it was a young lady who had actually made the request of meeting everyone who worked on the case.

There were very few individuals from the Valken family who would fit that description so the Commissioner had hurried over to the conference room to confirm if this person was the one who had come to his mind the moment he had received this information from his assistant.

As he stood outside the door of the conference room, he heard a voice that, though was slightly different from what he recalled, retained a certain level of familiarity.

Disregarding the voice, the way she spoke was just the same as it had been years ago.

Therefore, he did not waste another moment and had rushed into the room, announcing his presence.

Now that he had finished greeting his favorite person from the younger generation of the Valken family, he nodded his head to the Tuskar brothers, who he knew were Nita's cousins, before turning to face the detective working on Detrim's case.

"If you still need proof, then come meet me at my office later today." Commissioner Mikhayel Osbourne ordered, using his usual stern tone, unlike the one he had used while conversing with Nita just a few moments earlier.

Detective Sam Mulligan felt his back stiffen on instinct for the second time today, but this time, he knew it was due to the annoyance radiating through the old man's body, which was currently being directed towards him.

The Commissioner's words were in response to him suspecting Nita in the disappearance of her brother.

They had been discussing Nita providing proof when the Commissioner had walked into the room, interrupting their conversation.

Now it appeared that he had brought this topic back up, expressing his interest in being of assistance by providing information that would help in removing any and all suspicions from Nita.

While Rowan and Jodie were once again confused at the confident statement given out by this old man, Nita simply shrugged her shoulders at them, unwilling to explain the current situation to them.

On the other hand, Detective Sam was facing a moral dilemma at this moment.

He did not know whether he should blindly trust the Commissioner who was a reputed police official, or press Nita further about her supposed involvement in Detrim's disappearance.

While he was still confused about what he should do next, the Commissioner, who sensed his inner conflict, gave him a quick pat on the shoulder.

"Just come to my office later. You will have all the information you need." The old man assured once again, explaining that the detective did not have to set his work ethics aside just for the sake of his superior's words.

Mikhayel, as promised, would provide all of the information the detective required to take Nita off the list of suspects in this case.

Having received this assurance, Detective Mulligan chose to trust the Commissioner and gave him a brief nod.

Once his inner conflict was resolved, he returned to his usual chirpy attitude as he shot Nita and her cousins a bright smile.

"It's time!" He announced as the rest of his colleagues should have returned to the headquarters by now.

Thirty minutes had passed already and with the Commissioner's unexpected arrival, they had spent enough time for everyone to be gathered in the area he had instructed them when he had asked them to rush back to the office.

Therefore, Detective Mulligan soon escorted this group out of the conference room and headed in a different direction.

The tall and bulky man was at the front, leading the way, while the rest split into groups of two as they followed him.

Nita and the Commissioner were right behind him, with the older man whispering into her ear every few steps.

Whereas, the Tuskar brothers walked at the very end, observing the interaction between this unlikely pair of young and old.

While Rowan was wondering what they could be discussing, Jodie was more concerned about something else.

However, neither was this a good time to ask the questions that had entered his, mind nor was this the right place to voice out his doubts.

Hence, he kept his thoughts to himself as he too followed after the rest as they headed to a different side of this floor altogether.

Soon, the group reached at the door of another room, but this one had large windows, which helped them take a glimpse of what was inside.

As they approached this room, Nita had already noticed that many people were waiting for them inside.

The moment they stopped at the door, she turned toward Jodie, who nodded at her, as though he was already aware of what she wished him to do.

'He catches on quickly.' She praised his presence of mind but she did not have to do so as Rowan was the one who had explained to Jodie what he needed to do next while they were heading here.

In this way, Jodie stole the credit that should have belonged to his brother, but neither of them realized this as they were too focused on what would take place next.

Just as Detective Mulligan was about to open the door for them, he noticed how everyone was now staring at Jodie, who stood at the very end of the group.

As he wondered what they were up to, he noticed Jodie shutting his eyes and taking a deep breath, holding it in with his eyes closed.

Nita was the first to catch the bewilderment on the detective's face as he appeared concerned about Jodie's condition.

"Don't worry about him. He gets nervous when he sees crowded places." She revealed while pointing at the people inside the room with her chin.

"Just give him a minute and he will be fine." She added and saw the detective give her a hesitant nod.

While she was still speaking, Jodie had already opened his eyes and was now glaring at Nita, who had been spewing nonsense about him.

'If only I did not have to stay silent right now, then I would have given her a piece of my mind!' He scoffed at this annoying cousin of his who never let go of a chance to ruin his reputation.

Not paying any attention to the glaring young man behind her, Nita gestured for the detective to open the door.

After all, having seen how Jodie works, she had a fair idea of how long he would need to work.

Therefore, she had timed it perfectly before she let the detective know that they were ready to head inside.

"He seems all better now, so shall we?" She added when she saw that he did not move.

Detective Mulligan had been alternating his gaze between the glaring Jodie and the unbothered Nita, but hearing her question, he hurriedly pushed the door open, attracting the attention of everyone present in the room.
