Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Malcolm: The Heat Emperor 2(Edited)

The moment Marco stepped across the Sanctuary's invisible boundary, the mechanical heart embedded in his chest pulsed uneasily.

A low, rhythmic vibration reverberated beneath his ribs, accompanied by a subtle fluctuation in the reactor's internal energy. It was as though the mechanical heart had sensed something beyond ordinary perception and was instinctively responding to the invisible gaze bearing down upon them.

Someone or something was watching them.

Marco hardly needed confirmation. Deep down, he already had a fairly good idea of who their observer was.

Every Sanctuary had its own ruler, a terrifying powerhouse whose overwhelming strength served as the foundation upon which the entire domain was built. These individuals were not ordinary awakened beings. They were monsters who had survived the corrupted hell of the wastelands, endured countless trials, and climbed to heights that most people could scarcely imagine.

They were the kind of existences nobody wanted to provoke without a very good reason.

Consequently, the fact that such a being had detected their arrival came as no surprise to Marco. In fact, he had expected it from the moment he decided to bring his group here in search of refuge from the increasingly dangerous wastelands.

After all, a Sanctuary was not some blind spot where outsiders could enter freely and do whatever they pleased without consequence.

A Sanctuary was a domain established through overwhelming strength.

Some were built by a single powerhouse who possessed sufficient might to subdue everyone within the surrounding territory. Others were controlled by groups of powerful individuals who had joined forces to secure their position.

Regardless of their structure, however, most Sanctuaries shared one defining characteristic: their existence was closely tied to the control of an Armament.

An Armament was far more than a valuable possession. In the hands of a sufficiently powerful individual, it could become the foundation of an entire domain, providing the strength and influence necessary to establish authority over a vast territory.

But this raised a question.

What kind of strength would someone need to possess to establish unquestioned authority over an entire community of awakened individuals and terrifying mutants?

These were people who had survived the corrupted hell of the wastelands, where weakness was punished mercilessly and survival demanded the constant tempering of both body and will. Many had awakened extraordinary abilities, while others had transformed into beings whose very existence defied ordinary human understanding.

They were not people who could easily be intimidated, much less forced into submission by an ordinary individual.

And yet, someone had managed to bring them all under control.

That alone spoke volumes about the power of a Sanctuary's ruler.

Every Sanctuary, in one way or another, had an owner.

Some rulers maintained their authority through fear. Others relied on absolute strength, political influence, or the advantages granted by their Armaments. Whatever methods they employed, the result was much the same: their domains operated under their authority, and anyone who wished to survive within those boundaries had to understand the rules of the game.

Of course, this did not necessarily mean that every ruler personally involved themselves in the daily affairs of their territory.

Most powerful individuals had little interest in managing ordinary disputes or concerning themselves with the trivial matters of their inhabitants. Their attention was usually occupied by more important pursuits, particularly the acquisition of greater power and the expansion of their influence.

As long as the Sanctuary continued functioning and nobody threatened their position, they were generally content to let others handle the smaller affairs.

Marco understood this better than most.

Therefore, even after realizing that an unseen presence was monitoring their every move, he continued walking forward without slowing down.

He had no intention of provoking the Sanctuary's ruler, nor did he intend to interfere with the affairs of this territory. His group had come here seeking refuge, not trouble.

As far as he was concerned, there was no reason for their arrival to become a problem.

Naturally, that understanding came with one important condition.

As long as the Sanctuary's ruler left his group alone, Marco had no reason to interfere with the ruler's affairs.

But if some insignificant nobody within the Sanctuary grew bold enough to provoke him or target the people under his protection, that would be an entirely different matter.

Marco had no intention of allowing his group to be bullied simply because they were newcomers.

After all, the Sanctuary might belong to its ruler, but Marco had his own reputation to uphold.

And he certainly wasn't about to let a few local troublemakers mistake his willingness to remain peaceful for weakness.

One walked a few steps behind the others, his eyes constantly shifting as he observed the conditions of the settlement's outer region.

The buildings were crude and haphazardly scattered across the landscape, constructed from whatever materials their inhabitants had managed to scavenge. Some leaned precariously against one another, while others appeared barely capable of withstanding a strong gust of wind.

Most of the residents remained inside their makeshift homes. Only about a quarter of the settlement's population could be seen outside, and even those who ventured onto the streets seemed reluctant to linger for too long.

Through his senses, One could faintly detect the subtle movements concealed within the ramshackle structures. He sensed their shifting silhouettes, the quiet rhythm of their breathing, and the occasional movement of bodies behind walls and closed doors.

The settlement might have offered its inhabitants a measure of safety from the dangers of the wastelands, but that did not necessarily mean they could afford to relax.

Safety was not the same as comfort.

After observing their surroundings for a while, the group finally settled on a direction and continued along the worn settlement road.

They hadn't gone far when two figures suddenly appeared ahead of them, blocking their path.

The pair stood directly in front of the group at the entrance to the battered road, their presence making it clear that their arrival had not gone unnoticed.

The first was a tall, broad-shouldered man standing approximately 1.8 meters in height. His spiky, uneven hair was the color of dried ash, and his imposing physique made him appear considerably larger than his actual stature.

His upper body was completely bare, exposing an extraordinary mass of exaggerated muscles that seemed unnaturally dense. His arms were especially striking, each one thicker than a woman's waist, with the sheer volume of muscle making them look almost grotesque.

Yet, it wasn't merely their size that made them unsettling.

Large, larva-like veins bulged beneath the skin of his massive arms, visibly pulsing and shifting as though something living was crawling through them. With every contraction, a faint shimmer of energy spread across their surfaces, subtly distorting the air around his limbs.

There was something deeply unnatural about the sight, as though his body had been altered to accommodate a power that ordinary human flesh was never meant to contain.

His clothing was equally unrefined. He wore nothing above the waist, while a pair of rugged, dirt-stained trousers covered his lower body. A reinforced belt was fastened around his waist, carrying several scavenged tools and a short blade.

Everything about him suggested a man who had survived through violence and possessed the physical strength to continue doing so.

The woman standing beside him, however, presented a striking contrast.

She was slender, almost delicate in appearance, with long, flowing dark hair that framed a sharp and beautiful face. Her features were refined, and her narrow eyes possessed an observant quality that made it difficult to tell exactly what she was thinking.

Unlike the man beside her, whose imposing physique announced his strength at a glance, she carried herself with a quiet elegance.

She wore several layers of thin, semi-transparent fabric that wrapped around her body in graceful folds. The material followed the contours of her figure without appearing crude or vulgar, revealing just enough of her silhouette to suggest that every detail of her appearance had been carefully considered.

The fabric shimmered faintly, resembling finely woven silk, and moved gently with the slightest breeze.

Her attire was minimal, but it was neither careless nor disheveled. Every layer seemed deliberately arranged, giving her an appearance of effortless refinement that stood in sharp contrast to the rough surroundings.

At first glance, she might have been mistaken for someone fragile, perhaps even ill-suited to surviving in the wastelands.

But that impression quickly faded under closer observation.

There was something dangerous about her.

It lingered in the subtle sharpness of her gaze, in the quiet confidence of her posture, and in the unsettling composure with which she stood before a group of strangers who had only just entered the settlement.

She looked delicate.

But anyone foolish enough to mistake delicacy for weakness might soon discover how fatal such an assumption could be.

The spiky-haired man forced an ugly smile onto his face, twisting his stiff, rugged features into an unsettling expression. For a moment, his attempt at friendliness only made him look more intimidating. Eventually, however, the grimace settled into something resembling a welcoming grin, and he finally addressed the group "Travelers from the wasteland…"

He paused briefly, and the tone of his voice suddenly took on a deeper, more curious edge "That's really rare."

His eyes immediately swept across the five individuals standing before him, scrutinizing each of them in turn.

He observed their appearances, physiques, and the subtle details that distinguished them from ordinary people. The longer he looked, the more certain he became.

These people weren't ordinary migrants seeking refuge within the Sanctuary.

There was something different about them, something that set them apart from the desperate survivors who usually arrived at the settlement's gates.

After completing his assessment, he extended one hand slightly toward them in a gesture of introduction.

"Talon," he said. "A top-tier scavenger around these parts."

His grin widened faintly.

"You see, some of the higher-ups, and even a few of the weaker mutants who've managed to accumulate considerable wealth, still enjoy the taste of proper food. They have a particular fondness for the relics of the Old World, even though most of us no longer need such things to survive."

He gave a small shrug, as though the matter were perfectly ordinary.

"That's where I come in. I'm the one responsible for supplying them with those little luxuries. So, if you're looking for something special to satisfy your appetite, I'm your man."

He allowed his words to settle for a moment before smoothly continuing "Of course, you've now entered territory governed by His Excellency, the Heat Emperor."

The title rolled off his tongue with unmistakable reverence.

There was worship in his voice, but also fear and submission, as though merely speaking the name demanded a certain degree of respect.

Marco, however, couldn't have cared less about the irritating performance unfolding before him.

He didn't respond to Talon's introduction, nor did he show the slightest interest in the man's explanation of his occupation. He simply continued looking ahead, his expression unchanged.

The others behaved similarly.

Not one of them bothered to acknowledge Talon's presence in any meaningful way. They regarded the two figures blocking their path as though they were little more than wooden obstacles standing inconveniently in the middle of the road.

Only One paid close attention to the exchange, silently observing the situation while waiting to see how Marco would respond.

After all, Marco was clearly the leader of their group. If anyone intended to deal with these two, it would most likely be him.

Talon, who had been speaking with considerable confidence just moments earlier, gradually noticed the uncomfortable reality of the situation.

His ugly grin stiffened.

The friendly expression on his face became increasingly difficult to maintain as he realized that the entire group had effectively ignored him.

Not a single person had bothered to respond to his introduction.

Worse still, the large, bald man standing at the front, the one Talon had immediately identified as the group's leader, hadn't even spared him a glance.

For someone accustomed to introducing himself with confidence and receiving at least a measure of acknowledgment, the experience was humiliating.

Talon could tell that these newcomers didn't take him seriously.

In fact, judging by their complete lack of reaction, they seemed to regard him as someone unworthy of their attention.

And that realization made the smile on his face grow increasingly rigid.
