Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Malcolm: The Heat Emperor 1(Edited)

The first gift Malcolm received was a passive ability known as Thermal Omni-Perception.

It allowed him to perceive the world through heat, detecting the thermal energy radiated by living organisms and identifying the amount of heat contained within biological bodies.

Every living being possessed heat. Every moving object generated some degree of thermal presence, and even machines emitted warmth through their mechanical operations.

To Malcolm, perceiving the world no longer depended on sight or sound. It had become an immense landscape of thermal signatures, each one revealing the presence and nature of the things around him.

Living beings appeared as blazing constructs of energy, their bodies outlined by varying intensities of heat. Machines glowed with mechanical warmth, their internal components producing distinct thermal patterns that allowed him to recognize their presence and, in some cases, discern their operating conditions.

Mutants were different. Their thermal signatures appeared distorted and irregular, reflecting the unnatural alterations within their bodies.

Abominations were even more disturbing. They radiated chaotic infernos of biological heat, their thermal patterns so violent and unpredictable that they resembled raging fires trapped within malformed flesh.

Even Ink Pollution possessed a thermal signature.

It flickered incessantly, unstable and violent, its shifting patterns resembling a fire that could never settle into a consistent shape. Through this peculiar characteristic, Malcolm could perceive traces of the corruption itself, distinguishing its presence from the ordinary thermal signatures of the surrounding world.

Most remarkably, the effective range of Thermal Omni-Perception was not restricted by a fixed radius. Its reach depended on the limits of Malcolm's own perception.

The farther his perception could extend, the larger the area he could survey. If his perceptual range eventually expanded to encompass the entire wasteland, he could potentially detect every living being within that vast territory, provided their thermal signatures remained perceptible to him.

Concealment, darkness, and ordinary visual obstructions would offer little protection against this ability. A creature could hide behind a wall, bury itself beneath debris, or remain completely motionless in the shadows, yet its thermal presence could still betray its location.

For Malcolm, the world had become a sea of heat, and every living thing within his perception was a potential target.

But Thermal Omni-Perception was only the beginning.

The second gift bestowed upon him was an active ability known as Heat Detonation.

While his first ability allowed him to perceive thermal energy, Heat Detonation granted him the authority to manipulate it.

More precisely, it allowed him to target the thermal energy he detected through Thermal Omni-Perception and force it into a violent, uncontrolled release.

He didn't need to touch his target. He didn't need to see it with his eyes. As long as its thermal signature fell within his perception, he could potentially turn its own internal heat against it.

With nothing more than a thought, Malcolm could trigger a catastrophic thermal reaction within a targeted biological body.

Its internal temperature would surge beyond the limits its tissues could withstand. Cells would suffer catastrophic damage, bodily fluids would rapidly heat, and vital organs would be devastated by the sudden release of energy.

At sufficient intensity, the target would not merely suffer internal burns.

Its body would explode.

Flesh would rupture beneath the pressure of the thermal detonation, sending fragments scattering through the air. The resulting blast could reduce an unfortunate victim to a mangled mass of destroyed tissue before they even understood what had happened.

Living beings became living bombs, their own biological heat transformed into the instrument of their destruction.

And his ability wasn't limited to biological targets.

Machines within Malcolm's perception could also be subjected to forced thermal escalation. Their internal components could overheat catastrophically, their structural integrity could collapse, and their metal frameworks could melt into useless slag.

Mutants, whose bodies were already altered by unnatural forces, could erupt in spectacular bursts of energy and disintegrating flesh when subjected to a sufficiently powerful detonation.

Even so, the true horror of Heat Detonation wasn't merely its destructive potential.

It was what happened afterward.

The heat released by each detonation did not simply dissipate into the surrounding environment.

Malcolm could absorb it.

Every explosion became a source of nourishment. Every destroyed enemy contributed thermal energy that he could draw into himself, replenishing and strengthening his body while feeding the power that made his abilities possible.

The more destruction he unleashed, the more energy he could potentially harvest. The more energy he harvested, the more formidable he could become.

His enemies' deaths were not merely the end of their existence.

They were fuel for his continued evolution.

And this brings us to the final gift bestowed upon Malcolm by the Inkforce.

Unlike Heat Detonation, which he had to consciously activate, or Thermal Omni-Perception, which allowed him to perceive the thermal world around him, this final ability was another passive one.

It was known as Permanent Strengthening.

Permanent Strengthening was the passive ability that allowed Malcolm to continuously strengthen and evolve by absorbing the heat released whenever he detonated a biological body.

It was the foundation of his terrifying growth, and one of the principal reasons he could rule an entire Sanctuary without even employing the use of any guards, yet face virtually no resistance. No one dared to challenge his authority, much less organize a rebellion against him. In a world where strength determined survival, Malcolm had become an existence that few were foolish enough to provoke.

This unique gift bestowed upon him by the Inkforce possessed a remarkable property: the heat he absorbed would never dissipate.

Instead, it was stored within his body, converted into a personal reserve of internal energy, and continuously used to reinforce his physical constitution.

Every trace of absorbed heat became nourishment for his evolution.

The more heat he accumulated, the stronger his body became. His muscles grew denser and more powerful, his bones became increasingly resilient, and the density of his flesh continued to increase until his physical constitution surpassed the limits of ordinary biological organisms.

His raw strength grew more terrifying with every passing day. His endurance improved, his body became increasingly difficult to injure, and even his capacity to contain and manipulate internal thermal energy expanded alongside his physical development.

There appeared to be no fixed limit to this process.

As long as he could continue absorbing heat, he could continue growing stronger.

And as long as the world still possessed heat, Malcolm believed he could find a way to survive till the very end.

Yet, despite the terrifying nature of his abilities, he possessed one weakness that struck far deeper than any physical wound.

The cold.

It was his physical and psychological nemesis, an eternal reminder of the industrial freezer where he had once been abandoned to die.

Malcolm had never forgotten that experience. He remembered the helplessness, the numbness spreading through his fingers, and the unbearable sensation of warmth slipping away from his body while he lay powerless in the darkness.

That memory had become permanently engraved upon his soul.

To Malcolm, weakness was a sin. Wastefulness was an unforgivable offense, particularly when it involved heat. Every trace of warmth represented survival, strength, and the possibility of enduring another day.

To squander it was an insult to everything he had suffered.

And anyone who threatened the warmth he had accumulated was effectively challenging his very existence.

At that moment, Malcolm stood atop the towering structure of an ancient church from the Old World, a colossal fortress that had long since become known as the Dark Castle.

Deep within its core, the sanctuary's Armament pulsed like a star imprisoned within an incomprehensible shell, radiating pure, concentrated Inkforce throughout the entire Sanctuary.

Its influence extended across thousands of kilometres of distorted reality, imposing order upon a region where the natural laws of the world had been twisted beyond recognition.

Under its influence, the surrounding territory remained stable enough to sustain an entire city.

Thousands upon thousands of people lived within the Sanctuary, their continued existence made possible by the presence of the Armament at its heart.

And at the pinnacle of this domain stood Malcolm, the unquestioned ruler of everything beneath him.

He slowly closed his eyes.

Then he expanded his perception.

In an instant, the world around him seemed to ignite.

The boundaries of his awareness stretched outward, transforming the vast landscape into an immense ocean of thermal signatures. Every living creature, every functioning machine, and every disturbance he could perceive became another point of information within his expanding awareness.

And then, he detected them.

Five newcomers whose heat signatures were entirely different and easily differentiated from others, approaching his territory.

The first possessed a blazing mechanical reactor, its concentrated heat burning unnaturally bright within a biological frame. The thermal signature was unmistakable: something inside this individual functioned like a furnace, with a mechanical core that radiated an intensity far beyond that of an ordinary human body.

The second resembled a living blood furnace.

Violent thermal waves surged from his body, each pulse carrying an overwhelming intensity that suggested extraordinary physical power. His entire existence seemed saturated with heat, as though his blood itself had become a river of molten energy.

The third was even more unusual.

A storm of dark energy surrounded his physical form, radiating heat that exceeded what his biological constitution should have been capable of producing. The discrepancy immediately caught Malcolm's attention. Whatever this individual possessed, it allowed him to generate or sustain thermal energy far beyond the limits of an ordinary organism.

The fourth presented an entirely different phenomenon.

His thermal signature consisted of shifting, unstable patterns, constantly fluctuating as though his body were undergoing some form of continuous thermal conversion. The energy within him refused to settle into a consistent state, making his presence difficult to categorize through ordinary thermal analysis.

Malcolm's perception moved onward.

Then he reached the fifth figure.

And stopped.

For the first time since detecting the group, Malcolm had a change in his expression.

His eyebrows rose slightly.

'There was no heat' he muttered inwardly.

The fifth individual possessed no discernible thermal presence, no detectable vibration within Malcolm's perceptual framework, and not even the faintest energetic echo that might betray the existence of a living organism.

It was as though that body existed outside the very phenomenon through which Malcolm understood the world.

He could perceive the other four with remarkable clarity, their thermal signatures blazing across his awareness like fires in the darkness.

But this fifth figure was different.

It was an absolute void in his perception.

For several moments, Malcolm remained perfectly still atop the Dark Castle, his eyes closed as he attempted to make sense of what he had encountered.

In all his years of using Thermal Omni-Perception, he had never encountered anything quite like this.

And for an existence who had built his entire understanding of life, power, and survival around biological heat, there was something deeply unsettling about a being that appeared to possess none at all.

"Interesting… Is it not alive?"

Malcolm spoke in a perplexed voice, his gaze fixed upon the distant figure that had defied his perception.

After a brief pause, he expanded his Thermal Omni-Perception even further, pushing its boundaries beyond their previous limits. He probed deeper, extending his awareness through the surrounding environment and attempting to scan reality itself for even the faintest trace of the mysterious individual's existence.

Yet, he still found nothing.

Not a single trace of the very heat he was looking for, nor even the slightest thermal fluctuation.

Still, Malcolm wasn't satisfied. He pushed his perception into the fourth-dimensional thermal layer, a deeper level of awareness through which even conceptual entities often left behind vague, indistinct traces of their existence.

Surely, something would be there.

But even that deeper layer returned nothing.

Absolute emptiness.

According to the fundamental principles governing his ability, the absence of biological heat should have indicated that the body in question was no longer alive. After all, a corpse could not sustain the ordinary processes of a living organism indefinitely, much less continue functioning as though nothing were wrong.

And yet, the individual was clearly moving.

He was breathing, walking, and interacting with the others just as any ordinary living being would.

There was no discernible heat, energetic echo, nor any perceptible sign of biological activity, and yet, life continued to manifest before Malcolm's very eyes.

It was a contradiction, a pure paradox, and a blatant violation of the principles through which he understood existence.

For several moments, Malcolm remained totally silent, attempting to reconcile what he was witnessing with everything he knew about his own abilities.

Then, slowly, the corners of his mouth curled upward.

A thin, unsettling smile spread across his face, carrying none of the warmth its shape might have suggested. Instead, it was the expression of someone who had stumbled upon something so incomprehensible that it had awakened a long-dormant sense of curiosity.

When he finally spoke again, his voice carried a faint, almost imperceptible edge of excitement.

"For the first time in many years, my power has failed me."

He paused, his smile deepening slightly.

"Interesting. Very interesting."

His gaze remained fixed upon the fifth figure, as though he were looking at a puzzle that had suddenly appeared in a world he had long believed he understood.

"After all this time…"

A quiet chuckle escaped his lips.

"I've finally encountered someone truly interesting."
