Yami Yugi and Joey stood shoulder-to-shoulder, facing Weevil Underwood and Rex Raptor across the cleared conference-room dueling space.
Aoi watched from the edge of the arena, arms loosely crossed.
So this is the first time I've actually seen Yugi and Joey team up since I came here… In the original story they started doing this back in Duelist Kingdom, but Seto and I cut in and changed the flow.

"My turn! Draw!" Weevil's fingers twitched as he drew, then he grinned like he'd been waiting for this moment.
"Hehehe… I'll start with this! I activate the Field Spell—The Seal of Orichalcos!"
A green ring expanded outward, locking the four duelists inside. Everyone else—Seto, Aoi, the others—had stayed far enough back to avoid being caught.
Aoi's eyes narrowed. "Again with that field…"
Weevil slapped a card down. "I Normal Summon Inzektor Dragonfly in Attack Position!"
Inzektor Dragonfly (1000 ATK / 1800 DEF)
"And thanks to The Seal of Orichalcos, my monsters gain 500 ATK!"

"Inzektors?" Aoi muttered, surprised.
Seto glanced sideways. "You know that deck?"
"I've heard of it," Aoi said. "It can snowball into disgusting destruction chains. If you blink, you can get OTK'd."
Weevil's grin widened. "And now I activate Dragonfly's effect—once per turn, I can equip an 'Inzektor' from my hand or Graveyard to it!"
He revealed a card with theatrical relish.
"I equip Inzektor Hornet!"

"Dragonfly's ATK and DEF increase by Hornet's values!"
Weevil set two cards. "I set two, and since this is the first turn, I can't attack. End!"

Yami Yugi's Turn
"My turn. Draw."
He placed a monster down with practiced calm.
"I Normal Summon Magician's Rod in Attack Position. When it's Summoned, I can add a Spell/Trap that lists 'Dark Magician' from my Deck to my hand."
"I add Illusion Magic!"
Aoi's gaze sharpened slightly. He's building the classic core—but he's not rushing.
Yami Yugi set three cards.
"End."

Rex's Turn
Rex cracked his knuckles. "My turn—Draw!"
"I summon Giant Rex in Attack Position!"

"The Seal boosts it!"

He set two cards and smirked. "End!"

Joey's Turn
Joey exhaled slowly, then snapped a card down. "My turn! Draw!"
"I Normal Summon The Black Stone of Legend in Attack Position!"

"And I activate its effect—I Tribute it to Special Summon a Level 7 or lower 'Red-Eyes' monster from my Deck!"
"Come on out—Red-Eyes Black Dragon!"

Weevil's Turn
"My turn! Draw!" Weevil's voice rose with giddy malice.
"Hehehe—now you'll see what Inzektors can really do!"
"I send Inzektor Hornet from my equipped zone to the Graveyard to activate its effect—destroy one card on the field!"
Dragonfly's stats dropped back down.
Inzektor Dragonfly (1500 / 1800)
Weevil stabbed a finger toward Yugi. "I destroy Magician's Rod!"
Yami Yugi didn't flinch.
"I activate Illusion Magic." He raised the Spell calmly. "I Tribute Magician's Rod—so your destruction misses—and I add Dark Magician from my Deck to my hand."
Weevil clicked his tongue. "Tch—dodged, huh?"
"But it doesn't matter! Dragonfly's effect activates when an equipped card is sent to the Graveyard!"
"I Special Summon Inzektor Centipede from my Deck!"

"The Seal boosts it!"

"And now Centipede's effect—equip an Inzektor from my Graveyard to it!"
"I equip Inzektor Hornet to Centipede!"
Weevil's grin sharpened. "Then I send Hornet again—destroy one card!"
He pivoted hard.
"I destroy Joey's Red-Eyes Black Dragon!"
"WHAT?!" Joey snapped, but the blast hit—Red-Eyes shattered.
At that instant, two more Red-Eyes monsters surged onto Joey's field.
Weevil's eyes bulged. "What—?! I destroyed it!"
Joey's teeth flashed. "Yeah, and you triggered my hand trap."
"I activate Red-Eyes Retro Dragon from my hand—if a Level 7 or lower 'Red-Eyes' monster I control is destroyed by battle or an opponent's effect, I can Special Summon this card in Defense Position—then revive as many of those destroyed monsters as possible!"

Weevil hissed. "Tch—so I can't hit you directly?"
"Not today," Joey said, shoulders squaring.
Weevil turned, annoyed. "Fine! Then I'll crush Yugi instead!"
"Centipede attacks Yugi directly!"
Yami Yugi's eyes narrowed. "I respond."
He flipped a Trap with a crisp motion.
"I activate Magician's Navigation!"
"From my hand, I Special Summon Dark Magician!"

"And then I Special Summon Dark Magician of Illusion from my Deck in Defense Position!"

Centipede's "direct" line of fire was now blocked by an actual wall of magic.
Weevil's face twisted. "DAMN IT!"
He exhaled sharply and forced himself to regroup. "End!"

Aoi exhaled through her nose, amused in spite of herself. "Weevil just spent an entire turn 'showing off' and got nothing for it."
Duke nodded, impressed. "Yugi and Joey… their defensive layering is way tighter than it was during Battle City."
Aoi glanced at Seto.
"Seto," she said lightly, "don't fall behind."
Seto's eyes stayed on the field, cold and sharp. "Do you really think I'd stop improving?"
Then, without looking away, he added with contempt:
"They're weak. Not worth the time."
The next turns—Rex's and Joey's—were about to decide whether this team duel stayed controlled… or exploded into a full-on Orichalcos slaughterhouse.
