Chapter 7 - Explanation (2)

The creatures that first invaded the planet, now referred to as the first wave, were creatures governed by nothing but instincts alone. Mindless creatures that were eager to find out where they stood on the food chain, quickly discovering that their place was at the top.

Thus, a second war for the survival of humankind began.

The creatures showed no coordination at all; attacks occurred at random across the globe. Often, a horde of these creatures attacked a town or city, thus becoming their territory until driven away or killed entirely, making it extremely difficult to deal with them at first.

Unfortunately, that was not the only problem; these creatures seemed to appear out of thin air in random parts of the new world. Many invasions happened at the same time. Creating a difficult situation for military generals who had to decide which places would be sacrificed and which ones would be fought for.

Honestly, it didn't really matter; they all knew that no matter what decision was made, only bloodshed would follow. Often the blood of humans.

Human weaponry did very little against these creatures; they seemed to possess something that protected them from their armament. No one could describe it at first, but they all felt it. This strange sensation was the reason their bullets and missiles did very little damage to them. It was also the same reason for how abnormally strong they were.

Throughout military installations and military platoons, it was unofficially determined that if one wanted to survive an encounter with such creatures alone, they would have to empty the entire clip of their primary and secondary weapon in a single point of their body. Which obviously was not ideal on a battlefield, where a single distraction could cost anyone their life and the lives of those around them.

Humanity was weaker and less durable than the average creature. Later on, it was determined that even these mindless beasts had a social hierarchy based on strength.

These abominations were sometimes seen clustering around an even larger one of them. The larger creature would always be seen giving commands to these creatures. To a certain extent, of course. It was almost the same as how a pack of wolves would move to hunt down prey; the only difference now is that the coordination was used to slaughter huge numbers of humans instead of a single individual… back then at least.

As if that wasn't the worst of all, to everyone's horror, intelligent beings started appearing among the savage creatures. They were humanoid, with some deformities or strange body compositions.

For example, one such creature of the early days of the invasion in Europe looked humanoid from afar, but once anyone started approaching the being, they would have noticed the unnatural number of limbs it possessed.

Its skin tone was grey, almost ashen in color; it had red crimson eyes and white hair that flowed down to its shoulders. It wore a sleeveless, charcoal-black robe that hung loosely from the shoulders. Draped over its left shoulder was a long, tattered mantle, covering the arm completely.

The striking thing about the being was not its skin color or its clothing style, but the fact that it had two arms on the right side of its body. Two shoulders, two lean arms that were marked with restricted strength. It also had two hands, which were holding a blade each.

This particular being was a pain to deal with. It was one of the first humanoid beings to have appeared in this war, making it difficult for soldiers and generals to learn how to deal with them. It slaughtered thousands of soldiers every time it appeared on the battlefield.

Many creatures like this one started appearing in different regions of the world. Often destroying cities and slaughtering their inhabitants. Barely anything short of an atomic strike could bring them down, and since atomic weaponry had been abolished… well, no one openly announced they still had these weapons of the old war.

It was clear to everyone. Humanity was outnumbered, humanity was outmatched, and humanity found itself at the brink of extinction.

It was then that they stepped out into the light.

It was then that the first guardian made her entrance.

No one would ever forget it… Amidst the streets of an abandoned city, an unending battle against the veil ones took place. The battle had lasted for days, destroying what was left of the city. The human army was on its last legs, tired, scared, traumatized, and ready to give up. In their minds, it was easier to just let the creatures end them than keep on fighting a losing battle. The general in charge of the assault on the city had tried…really tried to fight and retake their city; alas, reality was hardly ever what once hoped for.

Until she arrived.

The humanoid veil creature was seen slaughtering humans without much effort. It seemed almost bored. Suddenly, its head jerked upward; with an expression of utter shock and terror, it saw her.

The Guardian of Light.

Solara.
