CHAPTER 9: THE ROAD TO OAKHAVEN
Day 42.
The road east was well-traveled but not crowded.
We fell into a rhythm—walking, talking, watching. Elara took point, her paladin training making her alert to ambushes. Kaia ranged ahead and behind, scouting. Liana walked beside me, pointing out plants and landmarks, explaining their significance. Raine stayed close, her bow ready, her eyes constantly moving.
It felt natural. Felt right.
"Tell me about your world," Liana said mid-morning. "The real details. Not the big things—the small things. What did you do for fun?"
I thought about it. "I read. Watched stories on a screen. Went to cafés."
"Cafés?"
"Places that served coffee. You'd sit, drink, talk, watch people." I miled slightly. "Sometimes I'd go just to be around others without having to interact. It's hard to explain."
"Alone together."
"Yes. Exactly."
Liana nodded thoughtfully. "We have something similar. Tea houses. Scholars gather to debate, merchants to trade news, ordinary people to escape their families for an afternoon."
"Sounds nice."
"It is." She glanced at me. "Would you like to visit one? When this is over?"
The question caught me off guard. When this was over. As if over was possible. As if we could simply... stop.
"I'd like that," I said.
And meant it.
---
We camped that night in a clearing off the road.
Kaia built a fire with practiced efficiency. Raine produced rations from her pack. Elara prayed—a quiet ritual I'd learned to recognize. Liana wrote in her journal, documenting everything.
I stood watch at the clearing's edge, listening to the night.
"You don't have to do that every time."
Elara appeared beside me, silent despite her armor.
"I don't sleep."
"You don't need to sleep. There's a difference." She looked at me, her golden hair catching firelight. "You could sit with us. Talk. Rest, even if you don't sleep."
"I'm not sure I remember how."
"Then learn." She smiled—that warm smile. "We're good teachers."
I followed her back to the fire.
Sat among them.
Let their voices wash over me—Liana arguing with Kaia about something trivial, Raine laughing at their bickering, Elara mediating with the patience of a saint.
Alone together.
I understood now.
