Chapter 17 - The Twin Sun Massacre

The stratosphere was no longer a silent vacuum. It had become a graveyard of light. The remains of the first Scout hung in the air like glittering dust, but Ren Thorne didn't have the luxury of admiring his handiwork. Above him, the remaining two "stars" flared with an indignant, pulsing radiance. The clinical observation was over; the extermination had begun.

[Status: Re-writing local Laws of Physics.]

Ren felt the change immediately. The space around him didn't just get heavy; it became hostile. The vacuum of the high atmosphere began to crystallize, forming jagged shards of "Solid Light" that sought to cage him.

"They're scared, System," Ren whispered, his voice a distorted rasp through his lungs of smoke. "They're trying to build a wall because they know I'm the door."

He gripped the Void-Reaper. The weapon was vibrating, its brass heart beating at a frantic pace as it processed the Core of the Fallen Star he had just consumed. The blade wasn't just shadow anymore; it was a window into the deep cosmos, a jagged edge of "True Nothingness."

The two Executioners moved in perfect unison. Unlike the spearhead Scout, these were massive, rotating rings of white-hot geometry—nested dodecahedrons that spun so fast they appeared as spheres of blinding fire.

They attacked not with beams, but with Gravity Shears.

The space between the two entities was pulled taut, creating a blade of invisible force miles wide. Ren felt his Umbral Domain scream as the shear sliced through it. His violet-smoke arm flickered, nearly dissipating under the pressure of the "Holy" gravity.

"Star-Eater Phase 1: Corona Intake!"

Ren didn't retreat. He lunged downward, diving back toward the cloud layer. The Shear followed, carving a massive canyon through the clouds, exposing the dark, terrified city of Aethelgard miles below.

"You want to play with gravity?" Ren's smile was a jagged line of white light. "I invented the Well."

He stopped his descent abruptly, anchoring himself to a point in space using Void Anchor. As the two spheres of light bore down on him, Ren didn't raise his scythe to block. He threw it.

The Void-Reaper spun through the air, a boomerang of absolute darkness. But it wasn't aimed at the entities. It was aimed at the point of intersection where their two gravitational fields met.

[Skill Combo: Singularity Point + Forge-Tether Resonance]

The scythe hit the "sweet spot" of their combined fields and exploded—not into fragments, but into a massive, swirling whirlpool of dark matter. It acted like a lightning rod for the Executioners' power. Their own Gravity Shears were pulled into the vortex, twisting their geometric forms, dragging the two "Gods" toward each other.

"Sovereign's Command: Collision!"

The two spheres of light struggled, their halos spinning frantically to counteract the pull. For a moment, the sky over the continent was lit by a flickering, strobe-light effect as the light fought the dark.

Ren appeared behind Unit 01. He didn't have his weapon, but he had his hands. His Void-arm grew, the fingers turning into elongated talons of obsidian. He plunged them into the outer ring of the entity.

[Siphoning Astral Essence...]

[Warning: Extreme Heat! Physical body is at 98% thermal limit!]

"I don't need a body to kill you," Ren hissed.

He began to rip. He wasn't just taking mana; he was peeling away the "Laws" that governed the entity's existence. He tore through the golden plating, through the crystalline buffers, until he reached the burning core.

Unit 02 saw its partner being dismantled and unleashed a Stellar Nova. It was a suicide move—a blast of energy meant to incinerate Ren and everything within a hundred-mile radius.

"Ren! The city!" Lia's voice screamed in his mind.

Ren looked down. If that blast hit, Aethelgard would be a glass bowl. The survivors he had fought so hard to free would be ash before they could even scream.

"Not today," Ren said, his voice dropping into a register that didn't belong to a human.

He didn't pull back. He reached out with his other hand, his flesh-and-blood hand, and grabbed the core of Unit 01. At the same time, he used Void Step to bridge the gap to Unit 02, his body stretched between the two entities like a bridge across the suns.

"Ultimate Art: The Maw of the Void King."

Ren's chest didn't just open; it vanished. He became a conduit—a hollow tube connecting the two dying stars. He forced the energy of Unit 02's supernova through his own soul and into the core of Unit 01.

He was a human lightning rod for the apocalypse.

[Soul Integrity: FRACTURING]

[Level Up! 72 -> 75... 78... 82... 85!]

The two Executioners didn't explode. They collapsed. The energy of the supernova was perfectly cancelled out by the Void intake, resulting in a silent, violent implosion. The two "Stars" were crushed into two tiny, dense beads of grey matter, which Ren caught in his hands as he fell toward the earth.

The sky finally went black. The artificial twilight was gone. For the first time in eons, the people of Aethelgard saw the real stars—the distant, uncaring lights of the true universe.

Ren fell like a meteor. He was burning, his clothes gone, his skin etched with glowing violet runes. He hit the ruins of the Palace with a force that created a new crater in the center of the city.

Silence reclaimed the capital.

Lia was the first to reach the crater. She scrambled down the hot, glass-slicked sides, her breath hitching in her throat. At the center of the pit lay Ren.

He was barely recognizable. His left arm was a steady, solid limb of dark stars. His right arm was charred bone and muscle. But his eyes... his eyes were open. They weren't nebulae anymore. They were two infinite, calm abysses.

"Ren?" Lia whispered, kneeling beside him.

Ren coughed, a small puff of violet smoke escaping his lips. He held out his hand. In his palm sat the two grey beads—the Hearts of the Executioners.

"Dinner... is served," he rasped, a weak but genuine smirk crossing his face.

[Quest Complete: The Stellar Hunters]

[New Threat Detected: The High Gardener is Awakening.]

Ren closed his eyes, the absolute exhaustion finally winning. He had killed the Emperor. He had eaten the stars. He was Level 85, a god amongst men, and yet he had never felt more humanly tired.

But as he drifted into the dark, he felt a new presence. Far across the ocean, in a continent the Empire had never dared to map, something massive had felt the death of the Executioners. Something that made the Stellar Hunters look like children.

"Let them come," Ren thought as he slipped into sleep. "I've still got plenty of room."
