Chapter 20 - Under the Ice Mask

Jay's POV

The bunker meeting left me feeling like I was made of liquid nitrogen. My own grandparents... trading my life and Keifer's safety for offshore accounts. I shook the chill off as Alex drove me back to the mansion.

I had exactly five minutes to scrub the scent of gunpowder and cold steel off my skin before stepping back into the "Jay" persona.

I slipped through the side entrance, moving like a shadow until I reached the main hallway.

I was just adjusting my sweater when the front door swung open with a heavy thud. 🚪

Keifer stumbled in, his arm draped over a laughing Yuri.

The smell of expensive whiskey and pizza hit me instantly. He was flushed, his tie hanging loose, and his eyes—usually so sharp—were glazed over with a sleepy, drunken heat. 🍹🥴

"Jay!" he shouted, his face lighting up like a kid on Christmas the second he saw me. He practically detached himself from Percy and swayed toward me.

"Careful, 'Karate Prodigy' coming through," Yuri joked, giving me a knowing wink before heading toward the kitchen. "He's all yours, Jay. He's been talking about your 'roundhouse kicks' for three hours."

Keifer reached me and immediately leaned his forehead against mine, his hands finding my waist to steady himself. "You..." he whispered, his breath warm against my lips. "You're a secret ninja. Why didn't you tell me? I would've been way more careful about teasing you."

"I'm not a ninja, Keifer," I murmured, my heart softening despite the war I was planning in my head. "I just know how to take care of myself."

"No... you're amazing," he trailed off, his thumb grazing my cheek. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a husky, flirtatious mumble. "Is it part of your training to look this beautiful? Because it's working. I'm completely... defenseless. You've got me in a... what do you call it? A heart-lock?" 💓✨

I felt the heat rush to my cheeks. The "Ice Queen" didn't stand a chance against a drunk, flirting Keifer. "You're ridiculous," I whispered, blushing furiously.

"I'm serious," he pouted, nuzzling into the crook of my neck. "If you ever need a sparring partner... or just someone to hold the trophy... I'm your guy. Just don't kick me too hard, okay? I'm fragile."

I laughed softly, guiding his arm over my shoulder. "Come on, 'fragile' boy. Let's get you to bed."

Author's POV

The world was spinning in the best way possible. The pizza was good, the drinks were strong, but Jay? Jay was the best part of the night. 🌙✨

She helped me into my room, her touch gentle but firm. Keifer watched her move—graceful, even when she was just pulling back my covers. He thought about that certificate, the black belt, the years of hard work she'd hidden. She was a warrior, and she was mine.

"Stay," he muttered as she turned to leave. Keifer caught her hand, pulling her back toward the bed. "Just for a minute. The room won't stop moving unless you're sitting here."

She hesitated, then sighed, a small, tender smile playing on her lips. She climbed into the oversized bed next to me, propping herself up on the pillows. He didn't waste a second, rolling over and resting my head on her lap. 🫂❤️

"You're the best thing that ever happened to this mansion, Jay," hewhispered, my eyes fluttering shut. "Whatever you're hiding... whatever you're afraid of... I've got you."

Keifer felt her fingers slide into my hair, a soothing, rhythmic motion that chased away the last of the alcohol's buzz.

"I know, Keifer," she whispered back, her voice sounding like a lullaby. "Sleep now."

As he drifted off, the last thing I felt was her leaning down to press a soft kiss to my forehead. In that moment, surrounded by her scent and the quiet of the night, the "King" finally felt safe. 👑😴 .

Jay's POV

I watched him fall into a deep, peaceful sleep, his breathing steady against my leg. He looked so innocent, so blissfully unaware that a sniper was currently watching my grandparents' house because of him.

I pulled the duvet over both of us, resting my head back against the headboard. I wouldn't get much sleep tonight—my mind was already calculating the next move against Lucas—but here, in the dark, with Keifer's hand draped protectively over mine, I allowed myself to feel the warmth.

Keifer's POV

The morning light was unforgiving, stabbing at my eyes like tiny needles. ☀️😫 I groaned, my head throbbing with a dull, rhythmic ache—the price for a night of victory drinks with Section E.

But as the fog cleared, I realized I wasn't alone.

The scent of rain and vanilla hit me first. I shifted slightly, and there she was. Jay. She was curled up beside me, her head resting on the pillow just inches from mine. In the soft morning glow, she looked... soft. Her dark lashes fanned against her cheeks, and her breathing was slow and even.

God, she's beautiful, I thought, my heart doing a slow, heavy thud. 💓✨

I stayed frozen, afraid that even a breath would wake her. I found myself admiring the sharp line of her jaw and the way a single stray lock of hair fell across her forehead.

I wanted to reach out, to trace the path of her brow, to see if she was as real as she felt. I didn't remember much of how we ended up like this—just flashes of laughter, a heavy door, and the feeling of her small, strong hand leading me through the dark.

Jay's POV

I had been awake by the sunlight passing through window 🪟 👀

The "Shadow Queen" in me never truly slept, especially not with a war brewing at the East Estate. But when I felt Keifer stir, I kept my eyes tightly shut, slowing my breathing into a perfect mimicry of sleep. 🎭

I could feel his hand weight on my waist. I wasn't feeling uncomfortable, instead I was feeling warm, heavy, and filled with something that made my toes curl under the duvet.

Thinking he was still lost in his hangover, I decided to play a little. I let my hand "drift" upward, my fingertips grazing the stubble on his jaw, trailing a slow, feather-light path up to his temple. I wanted to see how long he'd stay still. 🌬️☝️

"I know I'm handsome, Jay," his voice rang out, husky and thick with sleep. "But if you're going to stare—or touch—you might as well just kiss me." 🦁😏

I bolted upright, my eyes snapping open as heat flooded my face. "You—you were awake?!" I stammered, my heart racing. I tried to scramble out of the bed, but my blanket was caught. "I was just... checking if you had.. a fever! Alcohol raises.. body temperature!" 🍎🔥

Keifer's POV

She looked absolutely panicked, her face a brilliant shade of crimson. It was the most "human" I'd ever seen her. I chuckled, the sound vibrating in my chest, and reached out to catch her wrist before she could flee. 🏃‍♀️🚫

"Jay, wait. Relax," I said, pulling her back down to sit on the edge of the bed. I looked at her seriously, my thumb stroking the back of her hand. "What happened last night? I remember the guys... I remember seeing you at the door... and then it's just blurred edges and the smell of your perfume."

She bit her lip, her defensive walls slowly crumbling. "You were drunk, Keifer. Very drunk. You told me I was a 'secret ninja' and that you were 'fragile.'" She let out a small, shaky laugh. "You wouldn't let go of my hand. You asked me to stay until the room stopped spinning." 🫂✨

The memory hit me then—the feeling of safety, the way the world only made sense when I was near her. I leaned forward, resting my forehead against hers. The teasing was gone, replaced by a raw, quiet honesty.

"I don't need a hangover to want you to stay, Jay," I whispered. "Everything out there is loud and complicated. But here? With you? It's the only time I feel like I don't have to be the 'King' for anyone." 👑🛡️

Jay's POV

The weight of the "Black Thorne" protocol, the betrayal of my grandparents, and the shadow of Lucas—it all felt miles away. For the first time in years, I felt warm and safe in his arms. 🧊🔥

I leaned into him, closing my eyes and breathing in the scent of cedar and expensive soap. He was not my weakness , he was my strength.

"I'm not going anywhere, Keifer," I promised, my voice barely a whisper. "Not today. Not ever."

We stayed like that for a long time, two people holding onto each other while the world outside prepared for a storm. I knew that soon, I'd have to put the mask back on. I'd have to deal with the snipers, the bank accounts, and the blood-ties that felt like nooses.

But for now? For now, the only thing that mattered was the steady beat of his heart against mine. ❤️🩹
