The translucent panel hovered in his vision, steady and indifferent. Adrian studied it without emotion, though his mind worked carefully behind still, vertical pupils. Fifteen days. Thirty five centimeters. Thirty three evolution points. Every number was a measure of survival and growth, nothing more.

He lingered on the final line.

Mild Venom.

The word felt insufficient.

His recent battle had proven that he could kill efficiently, but it had also revealed limitations. The adult rodents had taken time to succumb. In a confined burrow that delay had nearly cost him. Two barbed tails had carved into his flank before the venom fully shut down their resistance. If their bodies had been slightly larger, slightly stronger, the outcome might have been different.

Venom was not merely an offensive tool. It was risk reduction.

Adrian remained coiled in the center of his stone chamber as he considered his options. Spending evolution points now would make him stronger immediately. Saving them would accelerate his next species evolution, whatever form that might take.

Short term gain versus long term transformation.

He evaluated the situation clinically. His new shelter was secure. His territory was not yet fully mapped. Prey density in the area was unknown. Larger predators might exist within range. Until he understood his environment more completely, lethality mattered more than potential.

An incomplete evolution was meaningless if he died beforehand.

Venom provided distance between strike and retaliation. The faster prey collapsed, the less time it had to injure him. That fact alone carried weight.

He reviewed his internal reserves again. Thirty three points.

He did not need all of them.

A measured investment was optimal.

Decision reached, Adrian shifted his focus toward the second translucent interface.

[Evolution Store]

The menu expanded in his perception, offering categorized upgrades in clean, emotionless text. His awareness passed over th possible improvements but ultimately landed on the option to improve his venom.

[Improve Venom: 10 Evolution Points.]

He paused only long enough to confirm his logic once more. There was no hesitation rooted in fear. Only calculation.

Then he selected it.

The change was immediate.

A violent surge of heat erupted from his fangs, spreading through his jaw and down the length of his skull. The sensation was not surface pain. It felt internal, as though his venom glands had been ignited from within.

His body tensed reflexively, coils tightening against the stone floor.

The burning intensified.

It spread from his head down his throat and into his torso, radiating along hidden channels that he had not consciously perceived before. His venom sacs felt as though they were swelling, expanding under pressure. His fangs ached sharply at their roots.

He remained still.

Pain was temporary. Strength was permanent.

Minutes passed slowly. His breathing remained controlled despite the instinctive urge to writhe. The stone beneath him felt cool against his scales, a grounding contrast to the internal heat.

Then came pressure.

He felt it distinctly as his fangs shifted forward, lengthening fractionally. Connective tissues stretched. New material formed. The sensation bordered on unbearable, but he endured it without movement.

Finally, the burning began to recede.

The pressure faded first, then the heat, leaving behind a dull throbbing that gradually diminished into nothing.

Silence returned to the chamber.

Adrian lifted his head carefully, flexing his jaw once to test the structural integrity of the new growth. His fangs extended slightly farther than before. When he parted his mouth, he could feel the difference. Sharper. More pronounced.

He accessed his status again.

Strong Venom.

A single word change. A measurable increase in lethality.

His glands felt heavier, fuller, primed.

Satisfied, Adrian lowered his head back onto the stone floor. The upgrade had consumed more energy than expected. Though he had eaten well the previous day, the metabolic demand of forced biological change was significant.

But before anything he needed to rest.

He coiled loosely in the center of the chamber and allowed his body to enter a low activity state. Digestion continued steadily. The warmth retained in the stone gradually diminished as night deepened outside.

Hours passed in stillness.

Eventually, faint light began filtering through the narrow entrance. The first rays of morning crept across the stone floor, illuminating the chamber in soft gold.

Adrian's eyes opened fully.

He remained motionless for several seconds, sampling the air with controlled tongue flicks. The night scents were fading. No new predator musk lingered near the entrance. No heavy vibrations disturbed the ground above.

Caution remained necessary, but immediate danger was absent.

He uncoiled and moved toward the exit slowly, mindful of his partially digested meal. The climb through the narrow opening was smooth. His increased fang length did not interfere with movement.

Emerging onto the boulder cluster, he paused.

The forest was quiet in the early morning. Cool air clung to the ground. Dew coated leaves and grass in faint silver droplets. Through infrared vision, the world appeared muted. Most creatures had yet to become fully active.

He needed heat.

Sliding onto the flattest surface of the largest rock, Adrian positioned his body to maximize exposure. The stone still retained a trace of yesterday's warmth, but the rising sun provided a more direct source.

He flattened slightly, spreading his coils to absorb as much energy as possible.

Gradually, warmth seeped into his scales.

The sensation was subtle at first. Then his internal systems began responding. Muscles loosened. Reaction speed increased. The dull heaviness of cool blood receded as his body temperature climbed.

He understood now how dependent this form was on environmental heat. Without sufficient warmth, he was sluggish. Vulnerable.

He remained exposed for nearly half an hour.

During that time, he did not relax completely. His head remained raised at a slight angle. His tongue flicked intermittently. Any shadow passing overhead could signal aerial predators. Any heavy vibration through the stone might indicate something approaching.

Nothing came.

By the time the sun had risen fully above the treeline, his body was operating near peak efficiency. He could feel the difference clearly. Movements were smoother. Muscles responded instantly.

He left the rock.

As he began to descend from the boulder cluster, a faint internal signal caught his attention.

Hunger.

He paused.

That was unexpected.

He had consumed an adult rodent barely a day ago. In his previous life, snakes often required days to digest large meals completely. Yet already the sensation of emptiness was returning.

Faster digestion meant more frequent feeding requirements.

More frequent feeding meant greater exposure to danger.

It also meant faster growth, if managed correctly.

The implication was clear. He could not afford complacency. Stability in shelter did not eliminate the need for consistent hunting success.

With this in mind, Adrian began surveying his surroundings.

He established a mental perimeter of approximately one hundred meters around his new home. That radius was manageable within a single day and large enough to provide early warning of threats.

He moved methodically, hugging natural cover where possible. His tongue flicked constantly, mapping scent trails invisible to sight. Chemoreception layered information over his perception. Old rodent paths. Bird droppings. Faint traces of reptilian musk.

He logged each detail silently.

To the north, he detected older tracks of a medium sized mammal, perhaps fox like based on stride depth. The scent was faint and at least a day old. Still, he marked the direction mentally as moderate risk.

To the east, the terrain dipped slightly into denser undergrowth. Insects were plentiful. Smaller lizard heat signatures flickered between rocks. Potential prey, though not substantial enough to satisfy his growing appetite fully.

To the south, near a fallen log, he found signs of burrowing activity. The scent was fresh but light. Possibly a new rodent nest. Worth monitoring.

Throughout his survey, he encountered no immediate predator within his defined radius. That did not guarantee safety, but it reduced urgency.

As the sun climbed higher, the forest grew more active. Heat signatures began appearing more frequently at the edges of his perception. Birds took flight overhead. Small mammals ventured cautiously from cover.

Adrian remained cautious.

This territory would serve as his base for now. It offered rock shelter, elevated vantage, and moderate prey density. With stronger venom and improved metabolism, he could exploit it efficiently.

He completed his circular path gradually, returning toward the boulder cluster as the day advanced.

His hunger was more pronounced now.

Faster digestion changed everything.

He would need to hunt again soon.
