Chapter 26 - Questions

Zael stepped forward, boots sinking slightly into the forest floor littered with broken branches and scorched leaves. The squad of five awakeners blocked their path, eyes narrowing with predatory focus.

[Lily — Rank 2 | Points: 22,650]

[Zael — Rank 23 | Points: 6,950]

Selvig surged first, hammer raised high. Mana hummed through his Hero-grade armor, shimmering in faint gold arcs.

Zael barely moved—sidestepping the initial swing, letting Selvig's momentum carry him past, and countering with a swift upward slash along the exposed side seam of his armor. Sparks flew, and Selvig stumbled back.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 8,500 | Total Points: 15,450

Selvig's eyes widened in disbelief. "Impossible…" he muttered, scrambling to recover, but Zael was already a step ahead.

The other three awakeners moved in unison, aiming to overwhelm Lily. She spun her spear like a blade of living light, each strike perfectly calculated.

One opponent tried a whip attack—she deflected it with a precise twirl, sending it snapping back to knock him off balance. Another hurled an orb of crackling fire; she leapt through the air, spearing it mid-flight and detonating the energy harmlessly nearby. The last attempted a charge with blades spinning in a blur. Lily sidestepped, sweeping her spear in a wide arc that sent him sprawling into a tree.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,500 | Lily Total: 28,150

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,700 | Lily Total: 33,850

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,800 | Lily Total: 39,650

Zael turned to face the last threat—the legendary grade awakener. Gold energy rippled across his body, aura so oppressive that even Zael felt the pull of its mana. The air shimmered as the awakener moved, leaving afterimages of energy that cut the trees and ground alike.

Zael activated Foresight Frame, eyes glowing faintly gold. The world fractured into multiple overlapping images as he calculated trajectories, attacks, and weak points. The legendary awakener lunged, swinging twin golden blades in a flurry. Zael ducked under one, rolled beneath another, and countered with a spinning strike that traced arcs of light across the enemy's chest.

> Skill Activated — Foresight Frame: Anticipates enemy movement, enhances reaction speed by 300%, visualizes weak points in real time.

The awakener didn't falter. Mana surged, blades extending into elongated arcs, striking at unpredictable angles. Zael parried with Combat Scholar Precision, energy sparks igniting at each contact.

> Skill Activated — Combat Scholar Precision: Enhances damage at critical points, multiplies effective output by analyzing opponent's structure.

They traded blows across the clearing for what felt like an eternity. Zael ducked a high swing, countered with a low thrust, then used a rapid succession of spins and jumps to redirect the opponent's momentum against him. Trees splintered, rocks exploded under heavy impacts, and the air pulsed with raw mana energy.

The legendary awakener screamed, channeling mana into a golden shockwave that sent Zael sliding across the ground. He recovered mid-roll, spinning upward and bringing his blade down into a glowing seam along the awakener's armor. The strike staggered him—but he rose immediately, eyes blazing.

Zael didn't hold back. He combined Precision Strike, Foresight Frame, and Strategic Marking to anticipate every attack. Each blow landed with perfect timing, cutting through the layers of gold-infused armor.

> Skill Activated — Strategic Marking: Highlights structural weak points, predicts opponent's next three movements, and enhances attack accuracy by 250%.

Finally, after a rapid flurry that left the forest around them splintered and smoking, Zael's blade found the final seam under the legendary awakener's chest. Mana flared violently, and the enemy staggered, collapsing to the ground.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 12,000 | Total Points: 27,450

Zael took a steadying breath, chest rising slowly. Sweat and dried blood streaked his face, but he was otherwise unscathed. His healing factor had already worked its magic overnight, leaving only the faint phantom ache from exertion.

Lily approached, spear lowered but eyes wide. "…That was… incredible," she said softly. Her gaze flicked to Zael. "…Why hide all this?"

Zael leaned against a broken tree, pretending exhaustion, one hand pressed lightly to his side. "…Numbers matter more than spectacle," he said, voice calm. "Besides, you handled the others beautifully."

Lily narrowed her eyes. "…You made it look like you were barely holding on. Deliberate?"

Zael smirked faintly, brushing a hand through his hair. "…Maybe." He paused. "…Some things are easier to observe than to explain."

The forest settled around them, faint whispers of energy still lingering in the air. The ranking panel shimmered faintly:

[Zael — Rank 7 | Points: 27,450]

[Lily — Rank 1 | Points: 39,650]

Even after a single coordinated fight, the board had shifted drastically. The dungeon's spectators and hidden viewers—human and otherwise—stared in disbelief. Selvig, nursing his rage and pride outside the dungeon, clenched his fists. "How…?" he muttered through gritted teeth, his mind racing to understand how Zael had completely outclassed him.

Zael watched Lily briefly, then turned his gaze to the path ahead. The third day had only begun.

The real hunt—the battle for points, position, and the top 100—was just getting started.

Zael sheathed his blade, dusting it off with a casual flick. The clearing was quiet now, save for the faint hum of residual mana lingering in the air. Broken branches, scorched earth, and the faint glow of dissipating magic told the tale of the fight they had just survived.

Lily's eyes, sharp and unyielding, followed every movement. She tilted her head slightly, her spear still held loosely, but her gaze was intense.

"…You made that look too easy," she said finally, breaking the silence. Her voice was quiet, measured, but carried an edge of disbelief.

Zael shrugged lightly, leaning against a shattered tree trunk. "Easy? Hard to tell. Depends on perspective."

She didn't let him off that easily. "…You weren't even using your full strength, were you?"

A faint smile tugged at Zael's lips. "…That obvious?"

"Yes," she said bluntly. "You've got tricks. Talents. Skills I've never seen anyone use before—and you're holding back. Why?"

Zael lifted a hand lazily and tapped the side of his head. "You see, Lily… I like to save the show for when it really matters. Makes life more interesting."

Lily frowned. "…Is that it? Or are you hiding something else?"

He let out a soft, almost dismissive laugh. "Maybe. Or maybe I just enjoy watching people think they understand me."

Her eyes narrowed, but there was a spark of amusement there. "…You're impossible."

Zael glanced at the ranking panel shimmering nearby. His points hadn't changed from last kill—10,150—but the reactions of the other awakeners, the nerves in the dungeon, the quiet panic spreading through their observers… it was exactly the kind of effect he wanted. He didn't need Ascendant Echo this time. Just his own skill and control.

"…So," Lily pressed, not giving up, "…all those attacks? All those kills? You really could have done more."

"Of course," Zael said lightly, brushing his cloak. "But doing more isn't always better. Sometimes you just… pace yourself. Learn the rhythm of the fight. Watch reactions. Predict next moves."

"…And the legendary awakener? Selvig?" she asked, her tone softer, curious but wary.

Zael's gaze flicked in the direction of the dungeon exit, as if weighing his words. "…They're strong, yes. But every piece has a weakness. Every move can be predicted. Timing is everything. You don't need to show everything all at once."

Lily exhaled slowly, as though she was trying to read him, but gave a small nod. "…I see."

He leaned back against the tree trunk, feigning fatigue, though inside every muscle was loose, refreshed from the overnight healing. "Don't worry. I've got plenty left for the real fight today. But no need to make it obvious yet."

Her gaze lingered on him, scrutinizing, questioning, but ultimately unsatisfied. "…You're… hiding a lot. I can tell. But I don't think I'm supposed to know."

Zael smiled faintly, letting a hint of mischief creep into his tone. "You're smart. But smart doesn't mean all-knowing."

She huffed, a mixture of exasperation and respect. "…You really are impossible."

He tilted his head lazily, as if thinking. "…Maybe. Or maybe I just like being underestimated."

The dungeon around them remained quiet, but Zael knew it wouldn't last. Other contestants were stirring. Stronger awakeners, those hunting for the top hundred points, were already moving toward the few remaining high-value targets.

Zael pushed himself up, stretching casually. "Come on. Let's see how the final day shakes out."

Lily gripped her spear tighter, eyes on him, but a faint smile flickered across her face. "…I think I like your style."

Zael offered a small, playful shrug. "Glad you approve. Now let's keep moving before someone decides to make the first kill of the day."

As they walked forward, shadows shifted in the dungeon canopy, faint glimmers of mana signaling others moving, plotting, and hunting. And Zael, still hiding the depth of his power, let Lily think he was just cautiously keeping pace.

Yet every step he took, every glance he threw, was calculated. Every kill he would take today would be deliberate, precise… enough to secure the top ranks without revealing the full scope of his abilities.

And Lily, oblivious to the secret that had just saved both their lives, walked beside him, trusting the shadow of strength she didn't yet understand.
