Chapter 32 - National Trial Begin

The transport didn't descend into an arena.

It plunged into a rift.

Clouds twisted into a spiral of light as the craft pierced a massive dimensional gate suspended above the capital. Space folded inward, swallowing the vessel whole. For a moment, gravity vanished.

Then the world snapped back into place.

Zael felt it immediately.

This wasn't an arena.

This wasn't a city.

It was a dungeon.

An endless landmass stretched beneath a storm-lit sky—ruined cities, forests of black crystal, fractured mountains, and rivers of glowing mana cutting through the terrain like veins.

A projection ignited across the heavens.

[NATIONAL TRIAL — INITIALIZATION COMPLETE]

[TOTAL CONTESTANTS: 300]

[PROVINCES REPRESENTED: 30]

[FORMAT: LAST SURVIVOR STANDING]

The voice of the system carried no emotion.

Only inevitability.

[THIS TRIAL CONTAINS NO MONSTERS]

[ALL HOSTILE ENTITIES ARE CONTESTANTS]

[POINT ACQUISITION: ELIMINATION ONLY]

Lily exhaled slowly beside him. "So… we're the dungeon."

Zael didn't answer.

He was already reading the rest.

---

More rules unfolded in layered windows.

[NATIONAL TRIAL RULESET]

• The battlefield is a sealed multi-zone dungeon.

• Zones will collapse over time, forcing convergence.

• Environmental hazards will activate randomly.

• Hidden supply zones will appear and disappear at irregular intervals.

• Defeat of another contestant grants their accumulated points.

• System-assisted recovery is disabled.

• External interference is impossible.

Then the final line appeared.

[VICTORY CONDITION: ONE REMAINING CONTESTANT]

Silence followed.

Three hundred elites.

Thirty provinces' strongest.

Only one winner.

No teams.

No alliances guaranteed.

No beasts to hunt.

Only each other.

---

They were deployed without ceremony.

Light swallowed Zael's vision, and when it cleared, he stood on a shattered highway overgrown with violet moss. Skyscraper ruins loomed in the distance like the ribs of a dead giant.

Nearby, Lily materialized in a shimmer of spatial distortion.

Farther away… he felt Zane.

Not by sight.

By pressure.

A presence like a drawn blade somewhere beyond the skyline.

Their rankings hovered briefly in their vision.

[Zane — Rank 1 | Profession: Battle God]

[Lily — Rank 2 | Profession: Spatial Walker]

[Zael — Rank 4 | Profession: Combat Scholar]

Then the board vanished.

No more province brackets.

No more safety of relative distance.

Here, Rank One meant nothing if you were surrounded.

---

Another message descended.

[ZONE ONE — ACTIVE]

[SAFE AREA WILL BEGIN SHRINKING IN: 12 HOURS]

[OUTSIDE ZONES: DAMAGE OVER TIME]

Lily frowned. "They're… pushing us together."

Zael nodded. "Gradually. So no one can hide until the end."

She hesitated. "And the supply zones?"

"They're bait."

She glanced at him. "You sound certain."

Zael's eyes moved to the distant ruins. "Because this isn't about fairness. It's about pressure."

---

Across the dungeon, other contestants were receiving the same rules.

Some laughed nervously.

Some immediately ran.

Some attacked the nearest person they saw.

The first eliminations came within minutes.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,400

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 6,100

The system began feeding.

Somewhere, someone screamed.

Somewhere else, someone celebrated.

And somewhere in the collapsing maze of ruined cities and broken mountains, the strongest from every province began to move.

Not toward beasts.

Not toward exits.

Toward each other.

---

Lily tightened her grip on her spear. "…Three hundred down to one."

Zael adjusted the strap of his blade.

"Not one," he corrected.

"One left."

Above them, the dungeon sky darkened slightly, as if aware of what was about to unfold.

The National Trial had begun.

Not as a tournament.

Not as a spectacle.

But as a war of elimination.

---

The first hour shattered any illusion of order.

Across the ruined continent, awakeners collided like falling stars.

In the west, among blackened spires of crystal, a woman with silver braids planted her staff into the ground and laughed.

"I don't like hiding."

Her name was Christina Voss — Rank 6 (Province 12), Profession: Storm Conductor.

Blue lightning spiraled outward in a widening ring.

> Skill Activated — Ion Dominion

Three contestants sprinting toward a supply beacon were caught mid-stride. Their bodies locked rigid as electricity threaded through muscle and bone.

One tried to counter with earth mana, raising a slab of stone.

Christina raised one finger.

The lightning curved.

Stone exploded.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,900

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 6,200

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,700

Her points surged. The storm around her thickened.

"Come on," she called, eyes shining. "I know you can do better than that."

---

Far to the north, inside a collapsed subway tunnel, shadows twisted unnaturally.

A lean man stepped out of the darkness, daggers dripping with black mist.

Nyx Varro — Rank 9 (Province 19), Profession: Night Reaper.

He had waited.

Two contestants crept through the tunnel ahead of him, whispering.

"We just need one more kill and we're safe—"

The shadow beneath their feet rose.

> Skill Activated — Black Veil

Their legs vanished into darkness.

Before either could scream, Nyx's daggers flashed.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 4,800

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,100

He didn't celebrate.

He simply melted back into the tunnel, moving toward the sound of distant fighting.

"Predators gather where blood flows," he murmured.

---

In the southern forest, where crimson leaves rained endlessly from twisted trees, steel rang in a furious storm.

A massive man in crimson armor swung a hammer the size of a wagon wheel.

Darius Holt — Rank 8 (Province 3), Profession: War Titan.

Three awakeners charged him together, one with twin blades, one with flame fists, and one chanting a spell.

Darius grinned.

> Skill Activated — Colossus Frame

His body expanded, muscles swelling beneath his armor.

The twin-blade user struck first.

The blades snapped.

Darius swung.

The ground cratered.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 6,400

The fire user leapt back, hurling a torrent of flame.

Darius walked through it.

The mage's spell completed—gravity warped forward—

> Skill Activated — Hammerfall

Darius brought the hammer down.

The shockwave flattened the forest.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 6,900

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 6,500

He planted his hammer in the dirt and exhaled.

"Good," he said. "This feels like a battlefield."

---

High above the central ruins, arrows rained like silver streaks.

From a broken tower stood a tall figure wrapped in green cloaks.

Ilyra Mooncrest — Rank 7 (Province 21), Profession: Star Archer.

Her bow hummed with astral light.

> Skill Activated — Constellation Mark

Targets glowed faintly below her.

She released.

Three arrows split midair into dozens.

They curved.

They hunted.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,300

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,700

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 6,000

She didn't move from her perch.

Not yet.

"Let them thin themselves," she whispered.

---

And then there was the chaos between the giants.

Not ranked in the top ten.

Not famous.

But desperate.

Two groups clashed in the ruins of a fallen mall.

Ice collided with wind.

Blades met chains.

Illusions burst into smoke.

One man screamed as his shield shattered.

A woman hurled a spear of light and took a dagger to the throat at the same time.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 3,100

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 3,400

Contestant defeated — Points gained: 3,800

The system did not care who started it.

Only who ended it.

---

Elsewhere…

Lily phased through a collapsing building, skewering a man mid-teleport as his spell failed.

> Contestant defeated — Points gained: 5,600

She landed beside Zael, breathing hard.

"You see this?" she asked. "They're killing without thinking."

Zael watched distant explosions paint the horizon red and blue.

"No," he said quietly. "They're killing because thinking won't save them anymore."

Their ranking windows flickered briefly.

[Lily — Rank 2 (Province 7)]

[Zael — Rank 4 (Province 7)]

Zane's presence burned somewhere far ahead, like a star behind clouds.

Already fighting.

Already climbing.

---

Above the battlefield, the dungeon sky darkened again.

A new message burned across every contestant's vision.

[ZONE TWO COLLAPSE IN: 10 HOURS]

[SUPPLY ZONES DEPLOYING]

And just like that, the war gained objectives.

Some turned toward the beacons.

Some toward the nearest strong presence.

And some…

Toward the top ten.

Because killing the weak was survival.

But killing the strong…

Was ascension.

The National Trial had stopped being a trial.

It had become a feeding ground for legends.

And the first names were already being carved into it.
