Chapter 6 - Like a Puddle

When Kazane turned two, Tsunade decided it was time to test her progress.

They sat in the courtyard of the Namikaze residence. Intricate seal arrays were carved into every surface, stone tiles, wooden pillars, and even the low outer walls. The markings faintly visible under the afternoon sun, layered safeguards designed not against enemies… but against the child seated at their centre.

Kazane sat cross-legged on the warm stone, her tiny back perfectly straight, hands resting neatly on her knees.

Across from her, Tsunade pressed a broad green leaf to her own forehead.

"Focus on bringing your chakra to the surface of your forehead," she instructed, voice steady. "Not the whole area, just the bit touching the leaf."

Kazane tilted her head up, wide blue eyes, just like her father's, fixed on Tsunade. She didn't blink. She didn't miss a word.

"Be careful you don't destroy the leaf with your chakra," Tsunade continued. "You will only need a tiny amount, spread evenly across the contact surface. The goal, Kazane, is to have the leaf stick to your head with nothing but your chakra. Understood?"

At once, Kazane's chakra stirred, soft at first, like a ripple under still water. The seal arrays beneath them answered with the faintest hum.

"What's a con-tact surf-ace?" she asked slowly, carefully shaping each syllable, determined to pronounce it correctly.

Tsunade's stern expression softened by a fraction. "Contact surface is the area where one thing touches another. Right now, that's where the leaf touches your forehead."

Kazane bobbed her head solemnly.

Tsunade lowered the leaf and handed it over.

Kazane accepted it with both hands.

Very carefully.

As though the fragile thing might tear from careless handling.

Near the engawa, Minato stood with his arms folded, posture outwardly relaxed but eyes sharp and calculating. He wasn't watching the leaf. He was watching the way the air shifted around his daughter.

Kushina hovered closer, watering can in hand, feigning interest in the plants while tracking every flicker of Kazane's chakra like a mother fox guarding her young.

"Remember," Tsunade said evenly. "Small. Even. No surges."

Kazane lifted the leaf and pressed it to her forehead.

It slid down immediately and landed in her lap.

She blinked.

"…Oh."

Jiraiya, lounging against the outer wall, snorted. "Riveting first attempt."

Tsunade didn't spare him a glance. "Again."

Kazane picked the leaf up. This time, she closed her eyes.

Her chakra rose eagerly. Too eagerly. The air thickened. The seals carved into the courtyard stones glowed faintly in response.

Too much, Minato thought, resisting the urge to intervene.

Kazane inhaled sharply.

Her chakra spiked, and the leaf shrivelled at the edges, drying and cracking under the pressure of her output.

Kushina winced.

Kazane's eyes flew open.

She stared at the damaged leaf in shocked wonder.

"…Broke it."

Her lower lip trembled. The devastation on her tiny face was immediate and raw.

Tsunade moved without hesitation, already holding another leaf. "Again. Less chakra."

Kazane looked down at her hands before accepting it.

"Too loud," she whispered to herself, recalling earlier lessons.

"Yes," Tsunade agreed calmly. "Too loud."

Kazane pressed the new leaf to her forehead.

"This time," Tsunade instructed, "don't push."

Kazane blinked. "…No push?"

"No push. Let it gather. Like a small puddle."

She went still.

Completely still.

Her breathing slowed. The usual overwhelming force of her chakra, vast and bright and dangerous, did not surge. Instead, it crept upward slowly, cautiously, like water rising in a shallow basin.

Minato's eyes sharpened.

Rather than flooding the contact surface, Kazane thinned her chakra until it was almost delicate, like silk drawn across glass.

The leaf trembled ever so slightly.

Kazane's brow furrowed in fierce concentration. Tiny beads of sweat formed at her temples.

It slid. Stopped, then slid all the way to the ground.

Minutes passed with Kazane trying again and again and again. With each attempt, the leaf stayed just a little longer, until finally.

It held. The world seemed to narrow into the fragile line where leaf met skin.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Fifteen.

The seal arrays remained steady. The air did not warp. No stone cracked beneath her.

Her chakra rested exactly where it needed to be; thin, even, controlled.

Her voice came out small. Proud.

"Con-tact… surf-ace."

Minato's lips curved despite himself. "Yes."

Kazane opened one eye cautiously.

The leaf remained.

Both eyes flew open, wide with dawning delight.

"It stayin'!"

Excitement, and with it, a flair in chakra. The air rippled faintly, but Kazane felt it.

She inhaled sharply, deeply, then exhaled slowly. Controlled.

The surge receded before it could tear the leaf apart.

Tsunade's posture eased almost imperceptibly.

"Release."

Kazane relaxed.

Her chakra withdrew quickly, and the leaf drifted down, perfectly intact.

Kushina crossed the courtyard in two strides and scooped Kazane into her arms, pressing a kiss to her temple.

Minato rose slowly, thoughtful pride settling behind his eyes.

Jiraiya approached and clapped him on the back. "Ha. Even kids three times her age, with half the chakra, would struggle with that." For once, there was no teasing in his voice. "You've got a good kid, Minato. Take care of her."

Tsunade bent and retrieved the fallen leaf, inspecting it closely. No structural damage or dehydration.

She looked at Kazane, who was now grinning up at her mother.

"Next," Tsunade said calmly, "we'll try it while moving."

Jiraiya groaned. "She just mastered it standing still."

Tsunade shot him a sharp look. "Just because things are looking good now doesn't mean she can slack off. Especially not with how rapidly her chakra is growing."

Kushina set Kazane back on her feet and tapped her nose affectionately. "Well done. Later, I'll get us some ice cream to celebrate."

"Yay!" Kazane cheered, all solemn intensity vanishing in an instant.

Above them, wind stirred through the trees of the Hidden Leaf.

And in a courtyard carved with containment seals, a two-year-old with far too much power for her age practised sticking a leaf to her forehead.

Without breaking the world around her.
