Chapter 11 - Upward

Early morning settled gently over the Hidden Leaf, dew clinging to the grass while a faint chill lingered in the air

already thinning beneath the slow rise of the sun.

Kazane moved through the courtyard in short, controlled bursts.

Leaves covered her from head to toe, held in place by a thin, carefully regulated layer of chakra. She sprinted forward, pivoted sharply, then leapt sideways across the stone path. Several leaves fluttered loose and drifted down.

"Too much leakage," advised Minato calmly.

Kazane landed, exhaled, and reset her stance.

"I felt it," she replied. "I pushed harder when I changed direction."

Minato nodded, arms folded. "You don't need more power. If anything, you need less."

Her feet struck the stone lightly as she accelerated across the courtyard. At the last moment, she pivoted sharply, leaping sideways instead of forward. Two leaves fluttered violently- but held.

She landed, adjusted her balance, then pushed into another burst of motion.

Unpredictable movement.

Even distribution.

No excess output.

"Remember," Minato continued, "chakra should flow like a current, not burst like a wave."

Kazane dashed forward again. This time her movement was smoother, lighter. Only one leaf slipped free.

Minato smiled faintly.

It was a new exercise Minato had developed after hearing what had happened a week earlier.

When she had used controlled chakra enhancement to strengthen her blows in front of Itachi Uchiha. A moment that had impressed him but alarmed her father.

She still remembered that conversation.

The idea still sat uncomfortably in Minato's chest.

Not because she had failed, but because she had been reckless.

-

"Do you realise how dangerous that was?" Minato asked.

Kazane had lowered her head.

His tone wasn't harsh, but it carried a weight that had made it worse.

"Kazane," he had said calmly, kneeling to meet her eye level, "why did you do that?"

"I wanted to show him," she had answered.

"Show him what?"

"That I could control it."

Minato had studied her quietly before asking, "How long have you known you could do that?"

She had hesitated.

"…A little while."

Instead of scolding further, Minato asked her to describe everything. The sensation, the timing, the way the chakra gathered around her fist.

When she finished, he had nodded thoughtfully. The technique sounded like it could be similar to the Raikage's, just less structured and more wild.

"That wasn't just control," he explained. "It was natural, raw, instinctive even."

Something maybe even unique to her, he thought

Her eyes had lifted slightly.

"Most shinobi train for years before they can do something like that."

Kazane blinked.

"But doing that without training is dangerous," he added gently.

That was how the training exercise began.

-

Now, in the courtyard, that lesson had become structured.

"Keep the layer thin," Minato called. "You're pushing too much toward your arms."

Kazane adjusted instinctively. The chakra film tightened around her shoulders and redistributed toward her legs.

She jumped again.

One leaf tore at the edge and drifted downward.

Failure. She stopped immediately to gather herself before starting again.

Good, he thought, allowing himself a small smile. She was learning to correct herself.

-

Inside the house, Kushina moved through the kitchen, humming softly as steam rose from the stove. The melody was an old lullaby. One, she hadn't realised she had started singing again until recently.

"It's nice having everyone home again," she said quietly to herself.

It had been a few weeks since Minato had returned from the battlefield. The house always felt warmer when he was home.

A warm smile lingered on her face. "Breakfast in ten," she called toward the open courtyard door. Even small, ordinary mornings felt precious.

-

Kakashi Hatake stepped through the courtyard gate just as Kazane completed another sprint.

He paused near the wooden fence, observing without interrupting.

Her breathing was steady. Her chakra flowed far more smoothly than he remembered. There was less distortion, less spill.

Minato noticed him first.

"Kakashi," he greeted happily.

Kakashi inclined his head slightly. "Minato-sensei."

Minato glanced toward the house.

"Perfect timing. Kushina's about to declare war if we let breakfast get cold." Minato laughed softly, turning to go inside.

"Short break," he shouted over to Kazane. "Then back to it."

"Yes," she gasped.

"You're improving," Kakashi said as he approached.

She blinked. "I am?"

"Your recovery time is shorter. And your chakra distortion is smaller when you change direction."

Kazane glanced down at her hands. "I'm still losing leaves."

"Fewer than before."

That was praise- from Kakashi.

That meant something.

Then Kushina's voice cut through the air:

"Food! Now!"

Kakashi stood immediately.

"Mission priority."

Kazane blinked once, then followed.

-

Breakfast was rice, with soup and grilled fish.

The atmosphere was warm and relaxed as Kushina placed bowls on the table. "Eat before it gets cold!"

Kazane sat beside Kakashi while Minato poured tea.

Kushina watched her daughter carefully.

"You've been training since sunrise again, haven't you?"

Kazane nodded.

Kushina sighed but smiled. "Just don't forget you're still growing."

Minato chuckled lightly. "That applies to shinobi, too."

They ate together, conversation drifting between light topics and occasional references to mission assignments between Minato and Kakashi.

For a brief moment, it felt like an ordinary family morning.

After, Minato and Kakashi left for their own training. Kazane resumed her training and helped her mother around the house.

-

By evening, the sky had shifted into warm golds and deepening shadows when they returned.

Kazane was still practising. Leaves scattered across the ground marked her repeated attempts.

Minato watched for a moment, then turned toward the house.

"Paperwork," he sighed, already sounding defeated. "Keep going, Kakashi will watch over you until dinner."

Kazane nodded without stopping.

-

Nearly twenty minutes passed before Kazane finished and pulled her chakra back.

Leaves drifted down around her.

Kakashi stepped forward.

He waited until she fully relaxed before speaking. "You're getting close."

Kazane looked at him. "Close to what?"

"If you keep improving like this…" Kakashi's tone remained calm, almost casual. "You'll probably be ready for tree climbing soon."

Kazane tilted her head slightly.

"Tree… climbing?"

"It's chakra control training."

She didn't ask more.

Instead, she nodded once.

A new goal, she thought simply.

No excitement or celebration.

Just focus.

Kakashi studied her for a moment, then gave a small approving nod.

-

Night gradually settled over the courtyard, not long after Kakashi left. Kazane stood near the pond, looking toward a tall tree at the edge of the training grounds.

Wind moved gently through its branches. Leaves rustled softly. She didn't fully understand what tree climbing involved yet.

Her chakra stirred faintly beneath her skin, steady now, but still wild like the eye of a storm.

The branches swayed again, silhouetted against the darkening sky.

Kazane remained there quietly, eyes fixed upward.

It seemed her training was beginning to rise, literally and metaphorically.
