Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 : Madison

San Francisco

Sam and Henry stood in the hospital morgue, the air cold and heavy with antiseptic. A metal drawer was pulled open, the victim lying under the harsh white lights.

They were posing as detectives.

Henry leaned slightly closer to the body, studying the damage across the chest.

"It's pretty much ripped apart like a beast did it," Henry said, trying to keep his voice steady. It was the first time he'd looked at a dead body like this—he didn't exactly have a PhD in corpses.

Sam ignored him and looked toward the doctor standing beside them.

"So, doctor," Sam asked calmly, "what do you think happened?"

The female medical examiner folded her arms slightly. "What's there to say? It was done by an animal. Definitely not human."

Sam glanced back at the body.

"No sign of anything unusual?" he asked. "Like… the heart missing?"

The doctor frowned. "How did you know that? I didn't include that in the report yet."

Sam didn't miss a beat.

"Lucky guess."

Henry crouched a little closer, fingers hovering near the bite marks. The teeth spacing was wide, deeper than a normal animal attack.

"Henry," Sam said firmly, already turning toward the door.

Henry was still examining the wound. "Yeah, yeah, I'm coming."

Sam gave him a look.

Henry finally straightened and stepped away from the body.

"Right," he said, wiping his hands on a cloth and following Sam out of the morgue.

Back at the motel, Dean had spread lunch across the small table—burgers, fries, and a couple of sodas. The TV hummed quietly in the background while the three of them ate.

Henry sat on the edge of the bed with his food, while Sam flipped open his laptop on the table.

Dean tore open a burger wrapper. "So the heart's missing?"

Sam nodded. "Yeah."

Dean took a bite, chewing as he thought. "First one, or are there more?"

"Not the first," Sam said, tapping a few keys on the laptop. "There were others over the last couple of months. Women mostly. Their bodies were never properly identified because they were dumped in the bay… but the hearts were missing."

Henry stopped chewing for a second.

"And the dates?" Dean asked.

Sam scrolled the report. "All of them disappeared during the lunar week."

Dean raised an eyebrow. "Same as this week?"

"Exactly."

Henry frowned slightly. "Do werewolves usually go for the heart?"

"Sometimes," Sam said. "Some packs believe eating the heart makes them stronger."

Dean nodded, and there was a very noticeable spark of excitement in his expression.

Sam noticed immediately.

"Dean," Sam said flatly, "could you be a bigger geek about this?"

Dean looked offended. "I'm sorry, man, but what about a human by day…"

He leaned forward slightly, hands gesturing.

"…and a freak animal killing machine by moonlight do you not understand?"

He grinned.

"I mean, werewolves are badass."

Dean continued, clearly enjoying himself. "We haven't seen one since we were kids."

Sam shook his head. "Okay, sparky. And you know what? After we kill it, we can go to Disneyland."

Dean ignored the sarcasm and reached into his jacket. He pulled out a small box and set it on the table.

"You know what the best part is?" he said.

He flipped the lid open.

Inside were silver bullets.

"We already know how to bring these suckers down."

Dean picked one up between his fingers.

"One of these bad boys right to the heart."

Henry watched Dean getting excited about the case, and he couldn't share the same enthusiasm. Dean was thinking about the hunt, about finally seeing a werewolf again after years.

Henry was thinking about the girl.

What was her name again… Madison, he thought. Yeah. Madison.

She was beautiful. Kind. And already bitten.

There was no cure.

The thought sat heavily in his mind as Dean finished talking about silver bullets.

Henry finally looked up from the table. "So what's our next move?"

Dean wiped his hands with a napkin and stood. "We talk to the girl who found the body."

A little while later, the Impala rolled into a quiet apartment complex. They walked up the corridor and Dean knocked on one of the doors.

Before anyone answered, the door across the hall creaked open.

A guy stepped out—mid-thirties, belly fat, wearing a tight shirt. Glenn.

"Is there a problem?" Glenn asked, eyeing them.

Dean didn't even look bothered. "Nothing. Police business."

Glenn nodded slowly, but his gaze shifted.

And stopped on Henry.

The guy stared a little too long.

Henry noticed immediately.

Why the hell is this guy looking at me like that, Henry thought. He isn't gay in the plot… is he gay in reality?

Before the moment could get any more awkward, the door behind Dean opened.

Madison stood there.

She looked between Dean, Sam, and Henry with a confused expression.

"Um… who are you?"

Dean immediately slipped into his flirty charm, flashing a polite smile. Beautiful woman detected—his switch flipped instantly.

"We're with the police," Dean said smoothly. "We just have a few questions about your boss. Do you mind if we come in?"

Madison hesitated for a second, then stepped aside.

"Sure… come in."

The three of them entered the apartment. It was neat and modest, with a couch facing a small coffee table and a desk near the window.

Madison closed the door behind them, still confused.

"I don't understand," she said. "I already gave my statement."

"Right," Sam said calmly. "Yeah, we just need to verify a few things."

Dean and Sam both turned toward her.

But then they noticed something odd.

Madison's attention had drifted slightly.

She was looking past them.

At Henry.

Meanwhile, Henry had completely missed it. He was casually looking around the apartment.
