Chapter 19 - Cloudy Day.

(Sapphire's POV)

Luke burst into the house like a tsunami.

"Bestie!"

"Over here!" I called out to him.

I laughed and tried to stand up before he engulfed me in a tight hug.

"You look okay, and I don't see any scratches, that's good, do you…?" He kept going.

"Luke, breathe." I laughed helplessly against his shoulders.

He pulled back and examined my face like a worried parent.

"Okay, you are indeed fine, physically at least."

Then he whispered, "where's that brooding husband of yours?"

Damian who was just beside me, raised an eyebrow.

"Hello, Luke."

"Ah ha! There you are! You see, your aura is so dark that it has made you invisible." He laughed.

Even Damian cracked a smile.

And so we spent the day, laughing and talking about everything.

Luke went about disturbing the bodyguards and teasing them.

He even went as far as telling Fernandez to blink if he was working with Damian against his will and needed help.

The head of security just stared ahead and did not move a muscle.

"Sad. Stockholm syndrome." He teased.

I laughed so hard.

We ate and played together while Damian was busy with his work.

Then the next morning came too soon and Luke had to leave.

He stretched lazily by the door as he grabbed his car keys.

"Well, bestie. My duty here is done." He muttered sleepily.

"You're leaving already? It's so early."

"Yes, as we all know, I have businesses to run." He told me proudly.

I snorted. "You can't even run your own life."

He gasped dramatically, "rude."

I laughed and walked him to his car, then I remembered something.

"Luke?"

"Hmm?"

"Can you do something for me?" I asked him.

"Anything." He replied immediately. Such a sweetheart.

"When I got married, everything happened so fast that I didn't pack my important documents from my father's house…"

"Okay, and?"

"Damian asked for some of my documents earlier and they're in my old room."

Luke tilted his head.

"So? Girl, get to the point already!"

"You still have my spare keys?"

His eyes lighted up. "Of course!"

"They're in the drawer, can you go there and get them for me?" I asked.

"I would love to do that! Especially as I have to see mum!" He grinned.

Luke loved my mother as if she was his.

"Thank you, bestie."

"Anything for you. Tell your Mr, that I said bye." He smiled and entered the car and drove off.

I walked back into the suddenly quiet house.

Damian was already looking at me.

The look in his eyes made my breath hitch.

"Come here." He drawled. "You've gone through a rough patch."

My heart began to beat faster as I slowly walked towards him.

And before I could even say anything, his hand wrapped around my waist and he pulled me closer.

"Let me take good care of you, okay?" He whispered.

I nodded without even understanding what he meant.

Next thing I knew, I was on his shoulder and he was taking me up the stairs.

And not being able to resist the sight of his tight butt, I poked it.

He growled and spanked my ass. "Don't be a naughty girl, else I'll treat you like one."

I felt the heat rush over my body.

"Undress for me, Sapphire." He said as soon as we reached the room.

"Can you turn around, please?"

"No." He replied firmly.

I swallowed and took off my clothes slowly.

"Are you teasing me?" His words came out as if he was trying to be in control of his own body.

"I would never." I replied shyly.

"Hmm." I raised my head and immediately, our eyes locked on each other, making the air between us changed at once.

Whatever happened next was a blur, until…

"Are you a virgin, Sapphire?" He had a tone of disbelief.

I nodded shyly. Throughout my college days, I didn't have the time to go all the way with any man.

"Is that a problem?" I asked him worriedly.

Damian chuckled. He looked pleased. "Far from it. It is not a problem at all."

We spent the next two hours getting to know each other's bodies.

And by the time we were done, I was very satiated and ready to sleep.

"Sleep now, blue eyes. You need it." Damian whispered.

He was on a call when I woke up, and his expression was very serious. Totally different from the man who had made love to me some hours ago.

"Oh. Okay… I will be there soon." A pause, then he glanced at me. "No…not at all."

He quickly showered and told me he had something to do, and then he was gone.

I felt light and happy and couldn't wait to tell Luke that I and Damian… oops, I had already lied to him that we had gone all the way before.

Ughhh

After showering, I took a stroll downstairs to get water.

"I am dehydrated!" I muttered.

As I drank the water, I saw my phone and picked it up.

I nearly spat the water back out.

I had nineteen missed calls.

All from Luke.

"Did he not see the files?" I wondered out loud.

Or he was probably being dramatic because he couldn't find them where I had said they were.

I called him back.

"Hi, Lu. Sorry I wa…"

"Sapphire, why didn't you pick up?!" He yelled.

His voice was shaking.

"Luke, relax. What is wrong?"

"They're after me." He cried.

My smile faded and my face went numb.

"What?"

"They saw me, Sapphire."

My entire body went cold.

"Who saw you? Luke, please. You're not making any sense." My voice was also beginning to shake.

"Sapphire," his breathing sounded ragged, "listen to me carefully…"

Jesus! What was happening?

"Luke, please…"

"Do not trust anyone but yourself…"

"What are you talking about? Are you driving? Please park your car somewhere."

"I can't." He was full on crying now. "Damian… he is the on…"

BANG!

The sound of a gunshot exploded through the phone.

I screamed.

"LUKE?!"

Another gunshot echoed.

I couldn't move.

"Luke…" I just kept repeating his name like a mantra.

Then his voice came back, weak and broken. "They've… they've killed me… Sapphire…"

The phone was still on, but he was no longer saying anything.

I just heard him take one final breath and that was all.

Suddenly I heard voices that I was somehow sure I knew, but for the life of me, I couldn't place them.

"He was on a call." One said.

"Break the phone." Another answered.

Then the line went dead.

My own phone slipped from my hand.

I couldn't breathe.

I couldn't move.

Then a loud laugh came out of my mouth.

Because what I had just heard… was impossible.

Luke couldn't be death.

Not my playful, vibrant Luke.

Not my best friend.

NO!

I just stood there, completely still.

Refusing to believe it.

Luke was not dead.
