Chapter 166 - A Spy Who Got a System

The conference room fell silent as Hiruzen Sarutobi laid out the situation. His expression was grave—the kind of serious that made even seasoned jonin sit up straighter.

"Yesterday morning, hundreds of Hidden Mist ninja crossed into the Land of River and established a forward position," he began. "Their commander is the Seven Ninja Swordsmen."

Hanekawa already knew this would be complicated. The Seven Swordsmen weren't just a name—they were a legendary unit. Each one was jonin-level, and together they were the kind of force that could topple small nations.

"Though their numbers are modest, their strength is considerable," Sarutobi continued. "More troubling—they have the sea at their backs. They can strike or defend as needed. It's a strategically sound position."

Shikaku Nara stood. "Is the target the Hidden Sand or Konoha?"

"Unknown," Sarutobi admitted. "But the Hidden Sand has requested our assistance."

The logic was sound. The Hidden Sand had taken a beating from the Hidden Cloud and was operating at half strength. If the Mist launched a full assault now, they'd be devastated. Sarutobi was clearly weighing whether to help or exploit the chaos—but with the Cloud and Hidden Stones both mobilizing, playing it safe seemed wisest.

"The Hidden Sand will send five hundred ninja to coordinate with us," Sarutobi decided. "Konoha will match that number. Tsunade will lead our forces."

Tsunade nodded casually. A thousand ninja wasn't even considered a major engagement by her standards. The real problem was the Seven Swordsmen.

Hanekawa's mind was already racing. Is this the arc where Might Duy fights them solo? The one where he kicks them into the Three Lucky Stars? But with Tsunade in the mix, the outcome became unpredictable.

"One final matter," Sarutobi sighed, and the room tensed. "The Hidden Stone has been mobilizing supplies. We don't know their full target, but Konoha is definitely on their list."

Hanekawa understood the implications. In the original timeline, Stone had sent ten thousand ninja against the Hidden Cloud, killing the Third Raikage. Their secondary assault on Konoha led to the Battle of Kannabi Bridge—where Obito supposedly died, only to be "rescued" by Madara and indoctrinated into the Moon Eye Project.

If Madara's plans change because of timeline shifts... Hanekawa wondered if Rin would even be targeted this time. With Tsunade around, capturing her would be exponentially harder.

"Sakumo Hatake will oversee our border patrols against Stone," Sarutobi said.

"I recommend Minato Namikaze instead," Danzo interjected smoothly.

Sarutobi shook his head. "Minato is currently supporting the Hidden Sand against the Cloud. He can't be spared."

"Once Orochimaru reaches the Land of Snow, Minato will have time to return," Danzo countered, his reasoning impeccable—though his real motive was transparent. He didn't want Minato stealing glory.

Orochimaru's frown deepened. Did Danzo really doubt his ability to handle a junior ninja?

"Minato's Flying Thunder God Technique makes him invaluable for rapid intelligence gathering," Mitomon Yan added. "In a situation this critical, we can't afford delays."

Sarutobi considered it. They had a point. "Very well. Minato it is."

Hanekawa almost raised an objection, then stopped himself. Actually, this works better. Without Minato, Orochimaru would face the Fourth Raikage, Killer Bee, and Yugito. Even he'd struggle against that combination. The battle would be long and difficult.

"Everyone should prepare accordingly," Sarutobi concluded, standing. "War is coming. Dismissed."

As the room emptied, Hanekawa caught fragments of conversation between Orochimaru and Sarutobi.

"Old man, I want to bring the Uchiha clan with me."

There it is. Orochimaru wasn't just volunteering for the battlefield—he wanted access to Sharingan users. Hanekawa filed that away but didn't interfere. Some things couldn't be stopped by warning alone.

"What a shame," Tsunade said as they walked.

"About what?"

"Your birthday is in two days," she explained. "If the war had delayed just a bit longer, we could have celebrated properly."

Hanekawa smiled. "Honestly? I'd forgotten about it entirely."

Tsunade's expression shifted instantly. "You forgot my birthday too?"

Wait, what? Hanekawa's mind scrambled. "Of course not! I'd never forget Teacher's birthday!"

She studied him for several seconds, then laughed—a genuine, warm sound that made something in his chest tighten.

"You're such a dutiful student," she teased.

"I'm not," he shot back. "I'm terrible to my students."

Tsunade's smile froze. She grabbed his collar, leaning close. "Am I not good to you?"

Her fragrance washed over him. This close, he could see every detail of her face—and if he looked down... Don't look down. Don't look down.

"You're amazing to me," he said sincerely. "Really."

She released him with a satisfied smile, though something flickered in her eyes. "I'll let you off the hook today."

She's stressed watching me, Hanekawa realized with some amusement. Can't blame her.

"When you go to the Land of River, take Might Guy with you?" he asked. "He'd be useful against the Seven Swordsmen."

"Already planned," Tsunade confirmed. "He's strong enough to matter."

"Are they really that dangerous?" Hanekawa doubted. "The current generation doesn't have Kisame. Most of them are just... mid-tier."

"Don't underestimate them," Tsunade warned, flicking his forehead. "They're the Mist Village's equivalent of the Legendary Sannin."

"How can they possibly compare to you?" he protested.

"Status-wise, not strength," she clarified. "Though I'd still crush them individually. You, however..." She smirked. "One maybe. Seven? Not a chance."

"I have the Yin Seal now," he countered.

Tsunade blinked, actually considering it. Had his strength really grown this much without her noticing? She felt oddly disoriented by the realization.

"Regardless," she said firmly, "you're not fighting seven alone. That's just stupid."

When they returned home, Kurenai and Rin immediately approached.

"What happened?" Kurenai asked. "Is it the Hidden Cloud again?"

"War's starting. We leave tomorrow," Hanekawa replied.

"Not the Cloud again!" Kurenai groaned. "They're so annoying!"

"Yes and no," Hanekawa said mysteriously.

"What does that mean?" Kurenai grabbed his wrist. "Tell me!"

He explained the three-front situation: Mist in the Land of River, Stone mobilizing against the borders, and Cloud still active in the south.

Kurenai's eyes widened. The situation was worse than she'd imagined.

Rin's worry deepened. War meant casualties among people she knew.

"Stop scaring them," Tsunade said, stepping on his foot. "Go prepare yourselves."

---

The next morning at breakfast, Yuhi Shinku spoke with unusual emotion. "I never thought I'd fight alongside my daughter."

"Don't worry," Kurenai declared confidently. "Hanekawa and I will protect you!"

Shinku's expression became deeply confused. "Given your current strength, I should be protecting you."

"Can you beat Hanekawa?" Kurenai challenged.

Shinku turned to Hanekawa. "Let's spar."

"Uncle Shinku, we're gathering at the gate soon," Hanekawa said diplomatically. I'm not hitting my future father-in-law.

"I was assigned to the Mist front instead of the Cloud front," Shinku changed the subject, clearly relieved. "Nara Suzaku reassigned me."

Hanekawa vaguely remembered Suzaku—a Nara jonin who'd monitored Naruto during the Fourth War.

"It seems I'm fortunate," Shinku said with satisfaction. He'd always hoped Kurenai and Hanekawa would succeed, and their growing influence in Konoha suggested they were on the right path.

---

Five hundred ninja assembled at Konoha's gate. After two days of travel, they reached the Land of River's border and established camp rather than pushing deeper—the Mist controlled the interior, and ambushes were likely.

That evening, Hanekawa's tent filled with celebration. Despite the war, they'd managed a proper dinner for his and Tsunade's shared birthday. Kurenai, Rin, Shinku, and Might Guy joined them.

"Birthday! The springtime of youth!" Guy exclaimed with characteristic enthusiasm.

"I wish Kakashi and Obito were here," Kurenai said wistfully.

Hanekawa quickly changed the subject before she could plant any death flags.

After everyone left, only Tsunade remained.

"I didn't prepare a gift," she admitted.

"Neither did I," Hanekawa said. "But I have an idea. We could give each other the same gift."

"What?"

"A hug?"

Tsunade stared at him for a long moment, then stepped forward and embraced him. He wrapped his arms around her waist, breathing in her warmth and scent.

After a few seconds, she pulled back, something unreadable crossing her face. She turned and left without another word.

Hanekawa stood alone in the tent, wondering what had just shifted between them.
