Chapter 165 - A Spy Who Got a System

"Teacher, I went to the ANBU."

Hanekawa walked beside Tsunade, recounting the recent developments in the Land of Snow conflict as they strolled through the village.

"Rasa's strength is impressive," Tsunade mused, raising an eyebrow. "Fortunately, the Third Raikage's conspiracy failed. Otherwise, Konoha would be surrounded on all sides."

She wasn't exaggerating. In the original timeline, The Hidden Leaf had faced simultaneous invasions from Sand, Stone, Mist, and Cloud. Only Minato Namikaze's mastery of the Flying Thunder God Technique had prevented total collapse—and that victory had catapulted him to the Fourth Hokage position despite his youth.

But not this time, Hanekawa thought. The playing field had shifted. Minato's path to power had become considerably more complicated.

"Teacher, I'm getting popsicles."

Hanekawa veered toward a nearby vendor.

Tsunade stopped to wait, arms crossed.

"One for you," he said, handing her a stick.

"Summer popsicles," she sighed contentedly, extending her pink tongue to lick the frozen treat. The cold made her shiver, and she closed her eyes in satisfaction.

Hanekawa blinked. Okay, that's... definitely a sight.

After lunch, Tsunade inevitably drifted toward the casino. She'd invited Hanekawa along, but he'd declined—he had training to do.

Earth Style: Clay Falling from the Sky!

His hands formed the final seal. The air twisted, and chunks of earth cascaded down around him.

Over the past two months, he'd been splitting his focus between perfecting the Yin Seal and mastering Earth Style ninjutsu. This B-rank technique—pulled from a scroll Sarutobi had provided through Tsunade—was proving useful.

"Hanekawa."

Rin appeared, her expression hesitant.

"Something wrong?" he asked.

"I... I want to ask you a favor." She took a breath. "I want to try the Spirit Transformation Technique."

"You want to control my body?" Hanekawa asked, confused.

"No, no!" Rin shook her head rapidly. "I'm worried something might go wrong on my first attempt. I need someone here in case I get into trouble."

"Ah. That makes sense." Hanekawa nodded. "Go ahead. I'll watch."

"Thank you."

Rin formed the hand seals. When she finished, her body trembled and began to collapse. Hanekawa caught her, one arm around her waist to keep her from falling.

A faint, sweet fragrance drifted up.

He steadied her, then closed his eyes and formed seals with his free hand.

Eye of the Heart!

His perception expanded. About three meters to his left, he detected something unusual—a ball of energy that flickered like chakra but with a distinctly different quality. The Pure Land, he realized. When a ninja died, their soul was drawn there. The Impure World Reincarnation could summon souls back, but this was something else entirely.

Rin's soul was drifting farther away.

That's not good.

He noticed her body growing cold.

"Rin!" he called out, pumping chakra into her form.

Seconds later, her eyes snapped open. She gasped for breath like she'd been drowning.

"What happened?" Hanekawa asked, relieved.

"I felt... a pull from somewhere," Rin said between breaths. "Then everything went dark. But I heard your voice, so I canceled the technique."

A pull. Hanekawa's mind raced. The Pure Land calling her back? Rin had figured out the Spirit Transformation Technique on her own after Kato Dan's death, but the training details were murky. She was navigating this blind.

"Let me check you," he said, reaching toward her forehead.

Rin froze.

Only then did she fully register where she was—cradled in Hanekawa's arms, close enough to hear his heartbeat. Her face flushed crimson at a speed that would've been comical if she weren't so mortified.

She grabbed his arm instinctively, unsure whether to stay or flee.

"Your body's fine," Hanekawa said with a slight smile, clearly amused by her reaction.

"Th-thank you..." Rin buried her face, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned closer, breathing in his scent, and felt a tingling sensation spread through her.

"That pull you felt—it's probably the Pure Land recognizing your soul as dead," Hanekawa explained thoughtfully. "You'll need to overcome that calling to master the technique."

"I... I understand..."

Rin broke free from his arms and stepped back, her face still burning. She spoke barely above a whisper.

"Again?" Hanekawa asked, grinning.

"N-no!" Rin shook her head quickly. In her current state, she'd definitely fail. "Not yet."

"Fair enough. Let's review what you learned."

Hanekawa turned back to his Earth Style practice without another word.

Rin let out a shaky breath and covered her face with her hands. It took several minutes before the heat subsided enough for her to think clearly.

She watched Hanekawa work through his jutsu, carefully replaying the sensation of her soul separating from her body. After a long moment, she opened her eyes and looked at him.

Her heart quickened at the thought of falling into his arms again.

Strangely, the prospect didn't feel entirely unwelcome.

"Um... Hanekawa?" she ventured.

"Ready?" he asked, already turning toward her with that knowing smile.

"Yes."

Rin formed the seals again.

This time, when her body collapsed into his arms, she lasted a full minute longer before losing consciousness.

"Thank you," she said afterward, her face still flushed.

"Always happy to help," Hanekawa replied smoothly.

"You're... very gentle," Rin said, looking at him with something between gratitude and embarrassment.

Hanekawa suppressed a smirk. Well, I'm not going to pretend I don't enjoy this.

"Let's keep practicing," Rin suggested, meeting his eyes.

After two close encounters, she'd grown somewhat accustomed to it. Besides, this was legitimate training—for both of them.

"Sure."

By dusk, Rin had made significant progress.

"Thank you for spending your whole afternoon on this," she said gratefully. "I'm sorry for taking up your time."

"It's fine," Hanekawa assured her. "How do you feel?"

"I have a solid grasp of the basics now," Rin said excitedly. "I think I'll be ready for the next stage soon."

"You've got this," Hanekawa said with an encouraging smile.

"Hanekawa!"

Kurenai appeared between them, slightly out of breath. She'd been practicing genjutsu and water techniques by the river behind Tsunade's house.

"What are you two talking about?" she asked curiously, glancing between them.

"The Spirit Transformation Technique," Rin answered, a hint of guilt in her voice.

"Hanekawa mentioned it can separate the soul from the body?" Kurenai's interest sparked immediately. "Can you do it now?"

"Not yet," Rin said. "I'll show you once I've mastered it."

"It's a promise!" Kurenai grabbed her hand. "Come on, Tsunade-sensei's back. Let's eat."

"Okay," Rin agreed.

---

August arrived, bringing even more oppressive heat to Konoha. Fortunately, ninja could regulate their body temperature with chakra. And with the Yin Seal, Hanekawa barely noticed.

Outside Tsunade's house, Kurenai watched Rin with anticipation.

"Are you sure about this?" Rin asked nervously.

"Absolutely!" Kurenai said without hesitation. "Let's do it!"

Over the past two months, Rin's Spirit Transformation Technique had progressed rapidly with Hanekawa's help. Now she'd reached the critical stage—actually invading someone else's spiritual world to disrupt their mind or seize control of their body.

Kurenai had volunteered to be her first real test subject.

"Don't worry," Hanekawa said reassuringly. "Teacher's here."

He'd specifically asked Tsunade to supervise, just in case.

"Let's begin," Tsunade said calmly.

Rin nodded and formed the seals.

Her body went rigid.

Now that she was practiced, she no longer needed Hanekawa's physical support. In the space the three couldn't see, her soul began to glow faintly, drifting toward Kurenai.

In an instant, Rin's perspective shifted. She found herself in a bizarre, dreamlike landscape—Kurenai's spiritual world.

"I can see you," Kurenai's voice echoed, "but I can't move my body."

"A body can only hold one soul," Tsunade explained from the outside. "With two souls present, the body doesn't know which one to obey. You have to determine a winner in the spiritual world before either of you can regain control."

"Bring it on!" Kurenai declared eagerly.

She quickly realized her mistake.

Without any experience fighting in the spiritual realm, she was overwhelmed in seconds. Rin's consciousness expanded to dominate more than half of the spiritual landscape.

"That's enough," Tsunade warned. "Any longer and you'll cause real damage."

Rin immediately withdrew, her soul snapping back into her body. Her eyes opened.

"Ugh, that was horrible," Kurenai shuddered, her whole body trembling. "I never want to experience that again."

"I'm sorry, Kurenai," Rin said sheepishly.

"Don't be," Kurenai smiled. "Once you've fully mastered this technique, our team will be unstoppable."

"I'll master it as soon as I can!" Rin promised, nodding vigorously.

The sound of rushing wind cut through the air.

"Lady Tsunade," the ANBU operative Aoi appeared. "The Hokage requests your presence at a jonin meeting in the conference room."

"A jonin meeting?" Tsunade's eyebrows rose. "Has something happened with the Hidden Sand?"

"The Hidden Sand has requested military assistance from The Hidden Leaf," Aoi reported directly.

Hanekawa, Kurenai, and Rin exchanged glances. War was coming. Konoha would have to get involved.

"I see," Tsunade said, standing. "Hanekawa, let's go."

"Yes, Teacher."

As they walked toward the Hokage Building, Hanekawa told the others, "Wait for us."

---

When Hanekawa entered the conference room, his heart skipped a beat.

Two unexpected figures sat among the assembled jonin: Orochimaru and Mitarashi Anko.

"Tsunade, it's been a while," Orochimaru greeted smoothly.

"You're actually attending a meeting?" Tsunade asked, clearly surprised.

"Thought I'd get some air," Orochimaru said casually.

Tsunade didn't buy it for a second. "The old man asked you to come, didn't he?"

Orochimaru didn't deny it.

Hanekawa noticed Orochimaru watching him and Anko chat—they'd known each other from the Academy. His stomach tightened.

"Tsk," Tsunade muttered, glancing toward the door. "That old bastard actually showed his face."

Danzo Shimura sat in his seat, his expression darkening when he noticed Tsunade, but he made no move to approach her. Despite losing his position as Root's leader, he still held the title of Hokage's advisor, which kept him in the upper echelon of Konoha's hierarchy.

Sarutobi Hiruzen entered with his two advisors, Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu.

"Yesterday, the Hidden Sand was ambushed by the Hidden Cloud," Sarutobi announced gravely. "They lost six to seven hundred ninja. Their defensive line is collapsing, and Kumogakure is pursuing aggressively. They'll reach the Land of Fire within days."

"We can't let the Hidden Cloud reach our territory!"

"We must send reinforcements immediately!"

"With the Hidden Sand as allies, we can defeat Kumogakure!"

The conference room erupted in discussion. Jonin voices overlapped as they debated strategy.

Sarutobi raised his hand for silence. "Konoha will mobilize four thousand ninja immediately. Command will go to—"

"I'll lead them," Orochimaru interrupted.

Sarutobi blinked, clearly caught off guard.

"Orochimaru has extensive experience," Danzo added smoothly. "With him in command, success is assured."

Sarutobi's eyes narrowed slightly. Are they coordinating?

After a brief pause, he nodded. "Very well."

Hanekawa's pulse quickened. This is bad.

If it were just Orochimaru, it would be manageable. But with Danzo backing him? This mirrored the original timeline—both of them competing with Minato for the Fourth Hokage position.

Except now Minato had Tsunade.

Still, if Orochimaru pulls off a decisive victory here, it's a massive achievement. Minato won't be able to match it unless...

Hanekawa realized the core problem: Tsunade needed to secure comparable accomplishments. Otherwise, Minato's path to the hat would be blocked regardless of his talent.

"Now, the second matter," Sarutobi continued without pause. "We've detected unusual activity in the Hidden Mist Village."

The jonin exchanged worried glances.

Two fronts? Hanekawa thought grimly.

The situation had just become significantly more complicated.
