Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: When Things Feel Heavy

Not every day felt golden.

A week after they made their promise, the hill was quiet again but not in a peaceful way. The sky was gray, and the wind felt colder than usual. Mira sat on the bench alone, her sketchbook closed on her lap.

Eli had texted that morning.

Mom's check-up today. Might not make it.

Mira understood. She really did. But understanding didn't stop the small ache in her chest.

She stared at the town below. Tricycles moved. People walked. Life continued like nothing had changed. But for her, something felt off-balance.

She missed him.

Not in a dramatic way. Not in a crying-under-the-rain way.

Just in the small way.

The way you miss someone sitting beside you even when you know why they aren't there.

She opened her sketchbook and tried to draw the hill, but the lines felt stiff. Her pencil paused again and again.

"Why does it feel heavier today?" she whispered to herself.

The wind didn't answer.

The next few days were busy.

College application deadlines were closer than she expected. At the bakery, Mang Tomas asked her to help more often because one of the workers got sick. At home, her mother seemed tired, quiet, distracted.

And Eli? He was trying. She knew he was.

But his replies were shorter.

Hospital again.

Mom's not feeling great.

Sorry.

Mira read every message twice. She typed long replies, then deleted half of them. She didn't want to add pressure.

One evening, she finally asked:

Are you okay?

He replied after almost an hour.

Trying to be.

That was when she realized something.

Love was not always sunsets and promises.

Sometimes, it was worry.

Sometimes, it was distance even when you were in the same town.

Sometimes, it was silence.

Two days later, he finally came back to the hill.

He looked tired.

Not just sleepy-tired.

Heavy-tired.

Mira stood when she saw him. "Hey."

"Hey," he answered, sitting down slowly.

They didn't talk right away.

The sky was pale orange, but not bright. The kind of sunset that felt unsure of itself.

"How's your mom?" Mira asked carefully.

"She needs more treatment," he said quietly. "Which means… we might have to stay in the city longer than I thought."

The words landed between them.

Longer.

Mira swallowed. "How long?"

"I don't know."

And that was worse than a number.

They sat in silence.

Not the comfortable silence from before.

This one was different.

Uncertain.

"I don't want to lose this," Eli said suddenly, looking at the hill instead of her.

"You won't," Mira answered quickly.

But inside, fear moved.

What if distance changed things? What if time did what it always does move forward without asking?

She looked at the acacia tree.

It was still there.

It had survived storms, heat, wind, years.

Maybe love was like that too.

Maybe it bent. Maybe it struggled. But maybe it stayed.

"I don't need perfect," she said softly. "I just need honest."

Eli looked at her then. Really looked at her.

"I'm scared," he admitted.

"Me too."

For the first time, their fear was shared openly. Not hidden behind jokes. Not softened with poetic words.

Just real.

The sun dipped lower.

"I don't know what the future looks like," Eli said. "But I know I don't want to face it without you."

Mira felt tears burn behind her eyes but she didn't let them fall.

"Then don't," she whispered.

He reached for her hand.

His grip wasn't strong.

But it was real.

And that was enough for now.

That night, as Mira lay in bed, she stared at the ceiling and thought about everything.

College. Distance. Hospitals. Promises.

Growing up was not as soft as she imagined.

It wasn't just shared horizons and golden light.

It was hard choices. Unclear timelines. Uncomfortable waiting.

But she also realized something else.

The hill didn't promise forever.

It only promised presence.

And maybe that was what mattered most.

Not forever.

Just choosing each other again and again even when things felt heavy.

Outside her window, the sky turned dark.

Tomorrow would come.

And whatever it brought, she would climb the hill again.

Even if the sunset wasn't perfect.

Even if the future wasn't clear.

Even if love felt fragile.

Because some things were worth showing up for.

And she was done being afraid of what might change.

She would stay.

One day at a time.
