Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Steps Forward

The morning air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of fresh bread from the bakery below. Mira tied her hair loosely, grabbed her sketchbook, and walked toward the hill. Today felt different lighter somehow, as if the hill knew she wasn't coming alone.

Eli was already there when she reached the slope. He waved, and she waved back, feeling her chest warm.

"Morning," she said, smiling.

"Morning," he replied, brushing a stray lock of hair from his face. "Ready for today?"

Mira nodded. "I think so. College forms, sketching, maybe helping at the bakery… all in one day."

Eli laughed softly. "Busy day, huh?"

"Very busy," she said, and laughed too.

They settled on the wooden bench, sketchbooks open. Mira tried to draw the sunrise, but the colors didn't match what she felt inside. She looked at Eli, who was sketching the acacia tree with quiet focus.

"Why do you always draw the tree?" she asked softly.

"Because it doesn't move," he said without looking up. "It reminds me that some things good or bad stay steady, even if everything else changes."

Mira nodded, thinking about the months they had been apart, the letters, the small waits, and now this moment. The tree had been here all along… like the hill. Like hope, maybe. Like them.

After a while, they closed their sketchbooks. Mira held her pencils loosely, unsure what to say.

"Eli," she whispered, "do you ever think… about the future?"

"All the time," he admitted. "College, my mom, maybe moving back to the city… I think about it. But I also think about here. About us."

Mira's stomach fluttered. "About us?"

He nodded. "I mean… I want us to keep this. No matter what happens."

She smiled softly, squeezing his hand. "Me too."

The sun climbed higher, spilling golden light across the hill. Birds chirped, children laughed far below, the bakery bell rang, and for a moment, the world felt still.

"Let's try something," Eli said after a pause. "No matter how busy life gets… we come back here. Every month… or every sunset we can."

Mira's eyes sparkled. "Promise."

They held hands tightly, a quiet agreement between them.

As if to celebrate, the sun peeked through a thin cloud, casting a golden streak across the hill. Mira laughed softly.

"Perfect?" she asked.

"Not perfect," Eli teased. "Just… ours."

The day stretched ahead full of small tasks, shared dreams, and laughter. Mira realized that growing up didn't mean leaving the hill behind. Maybe it just meant remembering it, keeping it somehow.

For the first time in a while, she felt ready to try… maybe just one step at a time. And he was there.
