Chapter 14 - First High School

Makoto knew Tomoe didn't mean what it sounded like, but her way of phrasing things could easily lead to a misunderstanding. Why couldn't she have just said "blood"? That would have made everything much clearer.

Dodging the black spider's relentless attacks, Makoto searched for an opening. Finding his chance, he managed to drop his blood directly into her mouth. She froze instantly, and a thick black mist billowed out from her body. Makoto immediately drew his bow, aiming at the mist as it drifted through the air.

Sword Princess: Isn't it impossible to attack mist?

Time Eater: Maybe Makoto has a special technique?

White: Not exactly. Even though it looks like mere mist, it actually possesses a physical presence. Right now, @Makoto is aiming for that physical core.

Tatsuya Yotsuba: ...

After Testarossa's explanation, Tatsuya felt there was nothing left to say. Even so, he didn't take his eyes off Makoto's live streaming for a single second. He hoped to find some kind of clue, even if he ultimately came up empty-handed.

The arrow soared through the air, easily piercing the physical essence of the black mist. It began to dissipate until not a single trace remained in the skies of Asora. Makoto stayed on high alert until he was absolutely certain the mist had vanished completely. A notification from the chat group signaled that the enemy had been defeated.

Makoto: Thanks for watching, I'm ending today's live streaming now.

The live streaming ended, but the group members stayed behind to discuss the nature of the black mist.

White: @Tatsuya Yotsuba, what do you think?

Tatsuya Yotsuba: It's extremely dangerous. If a creature as strong as her can be controlled, it means they could control us too.

Time Eater: ...

Sword Princess: ...

White: You're right. But what I fear is if they target those close to us who are even stronger than we are.

Tatsuya Yotsuba: If that happens, the chat group will surely take action.

(...)

White: I hope so.

Tatsuya chatted a bit more with the members before returning to reality.

"Sigh, things are getting more complicated. I hope everything stays fine from here on out."

...

The Entrance Ceremony at First High School

Tatsuya and Miyuki had achieved perfect scores in every subject, including practical magic. Now, one of them had to give a speech as the freshman representative. Tatsuya wasn't particularly fond of such tasks, so he asked Miyuki to handle it.

"Miyuki doesn't mind. But if I may, Miyuki has a request for Onii-sama." Her cheeks flushed as she looked down shyly.

"What is it? As long as it's not too much, I'm ready to grant your wish."

Miyuki fidgeted for a moment, then spoke firmly, "During our time in high school, I want to live alone with Onii-sama!"

"Why? Didn't Aunt already prepare a new house for you?"

"That's true, but I don't want to be apart from Onii-sama." With her eyes welling up, it was difficult for Tatsuya to refuse her.

Tatsuya sighed, a gentle smile appearing on his face. "In that case, talk to Aunt. If she allows it, I don't mind."

"Really?!" Her eyes sparkled like jewels. Tatsuya nodded softly while stroking her head. Miyuki smiled happily and leaned against his chest. Their closeness was undeniable; anyone watching would realize they weren't just ordinary siblings.

"Tatsuya-kun, Miyuki-san, those First High uniforms really suit you both."

The two of them turned around. Tatsuya gave a slight smile, while Miyuki instantly became as wary as a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

"Ara~ ara~ Miyuki-san, relax. I'm not going to fight you for Tatsuya-kun here." Mayumi smiled sweetly, yet maintained her dignified air.

"I don't believe you! You must be planning something."

"..." Mayumi was left speechless. She sighed and looked hesitantly at Tatsuya.

Tatsuya sighed as well, returning his hand to Miyuki's head. "Mayumi is the Student Council President; she wouldn't do anything to ruin her image, especially in public."

Hearing Tatsuya's explanation, Miyuki calmed down, though she still kept a sharp eye on Mayumi.

Mayumi's eyebrow twitched slightly; she kept her sweet smile, but there was a hint of something else lurking behind it.

"So, who is giving the speech? It's no problem if both of you do it."

"That would be me," Miyuki said, raising her small hand.

"Alright. And will Tatsuya-kun be joining the Student Council?"

"Huh?! Why him?!" Miyuki lost her composure instantly, glaring at Mayumi.

"Ara~ ara~ you didn't know? Every year, the student who ranks first in the entrance exams joins the Student Council."

"Hmph! I know that. What I'm asking is why it has to be Onii-sama?! Let me do it instead!"

Mayumi's smile faded slightly. "Fine then. I welcome you warmly." Her tone, however, was far from warm.

Miyuki felt annoyed, but she didn't say anything more for the time being.

Tatsuya took a long breath and whispered to himself, "Will my school life really be okay?" His gaze was slightly melancholic, though he also felt a sense of anticipation for his classes to begin.

To be continued...
