In the afternoon, on the highway bridge from the City Center to Santo Domingo, a small car drove smoothly in the middle lane.

Inside the car, a tall boy in a black school uniform was slumped in the passenger seat, with an expression of calm despair.

In the driver's seat, a red-haired woman in a yellow cleaner's coat quietly looked straight ahead, then suddenly spoke after a long pause: "Didn't I tell you to go get an upgrade?"

"I shouldn't have gone to the merchant," David immediately said upon hearing his mom's voice.

"Just to save a little money, now we have to pay dozens of times more."

"I know I was wrong."

"If you know you were wrong, then don't be foolish in the first place."

David looked out the car window and said, "But you said we were out of money at home."

"That's because I hadn't gotten my paycheck yet; our family doesn't have that much savings."

Listening to his mother's nagging, David impatiently started shaking his leg.

"Stop shaking your leg!" Gloria immediately said.

"Sigh..." David sighed but stopped the movement.

The atmosphere in the car became quiet again, then David sighed and said, "I've thought about it."

"What?"

"Wouldn't it be better if I dropped out and worked?"

"We can't afford the repair fees, can we? And you don't know how much of an outcast I am at school, do you?" David continued calmly, "The poor are simply invisible to them. Even if I wear the same clothes as them and study better than them, I'll never become one of them."

"I don't want to become like that either."

"Then, what am I working so hard for? Only for you to keep going. Who do you think I'm doing this for?"

David turned to look at his mother. With just one glance, David's previous deathly calm vanished, and his eyes became a little flustered: "Mom?"

Gloria was crying, tears streaming down her cheeks, biting her lip tightly. She continued, "Everyone says you're so smart and talented, that's why I... worked so hard to make you successful. If you don't want to go to school anymore, then what was all my effort for?"

"I know I was wrong, it's my fault, so... please don't cry."

Hearing David say that, Gloria pulled herself together and said, "Of course I know your situation is difficult. Mom was like this too, that's why you have to prove them wrong."

"I want you to become an elite," Gloria raised her left hand. Outside the car window, an armored car appeared. She raised her hand higher, then extended her index finger and said, "Work at the top of Arasaka Tower. You have that talent."

"..."

The top of Arasaka Tower...?

For some reason, David suddenly thought of what Jax had said to him.

(There's more than one way to reach the top of Arasaka Tower, and what you're doing now is the most useless kind.)

Thinking this, David turned his head to look out the window again. He clearly couldn't say such things to his mom, otherwise...

With that look, David suddenly froze.

He saw a heavy machine gun pointed at him. David was stunned, then reacted quickly, saying, "Mom!"

The next moment, bullets rained down, instantly tearing apart the car's body. David instinctively ducked and pressed Gloria's abdomen with his other hand, pushing her body back.

Beneath the shattered glass, David vaguely heard the voices of the guys who were shooting.

"Kill them!"

"Chase them! The corporate employees' cars are tough as hell!"

Two cars accelerated past the small car. The next moment, a muscular man roared and laughed maniacally. He shouldered a rocket launcher, aimed, and fired a shot, directly flipping the corporate vehicle ahead.

"This is the Animals' backbone!"

With a huge impact, the corporate car's wheels were blown off, but the damn car wasn't totaled by the rocket!

It was just flipped over.

Gloria was already terrified by the scene, staring blankly ahead with her mouth open. David watched the flipped corporate car crash towards theirs, reacting quickly, immediately shouting, "Mom, Mom!"

"Boom!"

...

"M-Mom?"

Red. All he saw when he opened his eyes was red, the burning flames. David saw his mother lying on her side, her back to him, trapped in the car. He struggled to call out to Gloria.

He saw his mom's body twitch and curl up, then a hovercar stopped, and the Trauma Team arrived.

Seeing this, David breathed a sigh of relief, but the response he received made David freeze.

"Not a contracted client, disregard. Hand over to the medical team. Our mission is to rescue the people in the sedan." The Trauma Team scanned David and Gloria, then immediately stood up and said.

"Wait, wait!"

David panicked, but they didn't stop; they left directly.

Then, David suddenly thought of Jax.

[If anything happens, call me.]

"Yes, yes, Jax, Big Brother Jax!"

David quickly dialed the number, and at the same time, after the Trauma Team left, a group of people dressed in the same clothes as his mom arrived at the scene.

They dragged David out from under the car and loaded Gloria onto a battered stretcher.

"David?" The call connected, and Jax's voice sounded.

David, as if grasping at a lifeline, shouted, "Help me, please help me!"

Jax, in Viktor's workshop, took a deep breath and said, "David, don't panic, calm down first."

David didn't calm down but quickly explained the situation.

After listening, Jax reached up, grabbed his black hair, and sat down.

It was really too far...

This was Watson District. From Watson District to Santo Domingo, driving would take at least an hour, and even the fastest rapid transit would take half an hour. There simply wasn't enough time.

Then, he could only try another method.

"David, listen to me. Patch my call through to the staff next to you. You're in the car right now, right?"

"Yes..." David nodded.

"Do as I say," Jax said seriously.

After a while, a third person joined the call.

"Hello? Who the hell are you? We're busy right now, okay? Spit it out!" An unfriendly voice sounded, and at the same time, a big, fleshy face appeared before Jax.

Jax looked at him calmly and said, "Gloria Martinez, please send her to the district hospital in Santo Domingo."

"Go to hell with your district hospital! No money and you still want to go? Are you crazy or am I crazy? No, who the hell are you anyway?"

"My name is Jax. You should know that name."

"Jax? Damn it, I've never heard that name before. No, you're telling me you're here acting like your motherf—" The man said impatiently, but halfway through his sentence, he suddenly stopped, replaced by a look of panic.

He suddenly remembered!

Jax, was it that Jax who was being talked about on the streets?!

This name had become thoroughly famous on the streets, a hot commodity for Fixers in various districts. It was said that Kerfu, the impressive Fixer from Heywood, died at Jax's hands.

And it was also rumored that he single-handedly wiped out a Nightwalkers family in the Badlands.

Damn it, this guy was a veritable harbinger of death!

Stuttering, sweat beaded on the cleaner's temples, unable to speak.

"It seems you recognize me," Jax said.

Pausing, Jax continued, "I'll say it again: take this child and his mother to the district hospital in Santo Domingo."

"If you don't do as I say, and something happens to this child's mother because of it..." Jax narrowed his eyes, "You understand what I'm saying, right? You understand."

Jax looked at him and said in a calm tone:

"I will find you."

"I promise."
