The inside of the cave was cold and dark. As soon as they entered, the noise of the forest disappeared and only the sound of their footsteps remained.
They turned on their flashlights and began to move slowly.
The walls were full of moisture and strange marks. In some places there were engravings, symbols and letters.
"I feel like we are in a movie," Christina whispered.
Suddenly Kostas stopped.
"Look here."
On the rock there were three letters:
F.B.P
"The same ones we saw outside," said Elpida.
They continued moving forward until the cave opened into a larger space. There, on a stone table, was an old notebook.
"Is this it?" Rania asked in surprise. "The treasure?"
Elpida took it in her hands carefully.
"It looks like a diary."
She opened it. On the first page were the letters again:
F.B.P.
She read a few lines and suddenly her face lit up.
"Kids… I know who it is!"
Kostas read with her and they said at the same time:
"Frixos Vasilios Papachristidis!"
They were all speechless.
The diary belonged to the great benefactor of their city. There was no gold or diamonds, but something much more important: the history of a person and a place.
On the last page was a message:
"The real gold of Pangaeos is its people."
Elpida smiled.
"Finally, we found treasure… just not the one we were expecting."
