Ava's POV
She didn't get to promise him.
The light came first.
Not Cho's torch that was ahead of them, pointing up at the hatch. This was behind. A different beam, brighter and more aggressive, cutting down the tunnel from the direction they had come, sweeping the concrete walls and finding them with the deliberate speed of someone who had been moving in the dark and knew exactly where they were going.
Leo moved.
One motion. His arm across her body, turning her, putting himself between her and the light before she had fully processed that the light was there. She went with it she was getting better at going with it, at trusting the geometry of how he positioned himself and her back found the tunnel wall and Leo was in front of her, solid and still, and Reeves was somewhere to their left doing something she couldn't see.
The beam stopped moving.
It landed on them.
