Chapter 3 - Echoing Voices

Walking through the streets of Veron, it was calm and soothing for Sylus. Freya walking by his side meant there would be no complications. He was discharged when the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with him; it was a miracle to them, and there was no concussion or injury.

"I still dont know how you and your crew would stumble on an S-ranked dungeon like that."

She was looking at her brother, it was still a mystery how something that odd could happen to them, and it wasnt something anyone would be able to predict.

"Just our ill luck, I guess," he said with a grin. Deep down, he was still a bit worried about the blurs he kept seeing in his memories. It was almost like there was something erased from his mind.

"Well, some luck. At least I didnt lose you to anything." Freya sniggled. They headed into a grocery store. They were now picking out ingredients for a meal, and Sylus was standing there trying to confuse himself.

A sound from the television broke his focus. He looked up to see a picture of his sister in her warrior gear on screen.

'News of SS-ranked Warrior Freya Cage's rise from a normal warrior to the Vice Captain of the Azure Guild is something we had never predicted. She is the youngest awoken warrior to reach that rank.'

Sylus smiled, turning to look at his sister as she was on the other side of the store picking out ingredients.

It was almost like he had a trip down memory lane, ten years ago, when he was a teenager. A monster on a rampage attacked both him and his sister.

Sylus used his powers then to make sure that he would protect Freya, almost killing himself in the process.

"Stand behind me, Freya!" He roared at the top of his voice, and his body began radiating a strong, bright light. "I won't let this thing hurt you."

The monster was strong, but there was no telling what was going to happen next. The beast kept attacking and attacking, not backing down for anything. Freya was right behind Sylus, whimpering, crying for help. All she could see was her brother standing up to something that looked like the stories they would tell children to get them to behave.

"Dont worry, Freya, it won't hurt you!" Sylus stood right in front of the creature, his entire body now letting off a powerful golden light as he gritted his teeth, staring down at the creature.

"DIE!" He roared as he let out a bright blast of light from his body, firing directly at the monster. The blast was strong enough to take half of the building behind the monster; the beast was eradicated, and the only thing left were the legs.

"Freya, you can come out now," Sylus muttered, barely keeping himself awake, knowing that any more strain than he would pass out immediately. "I told you that monster won't lay a finger on you."

Sylus smiled as his sister stood before him, trying to make sure she would be happy.

"You're okay," Sylus said before he slowly passed out. He knew that there was no chance for him to survive if he gave it all his. Freya stood by his side, crying. It was there that they would learn that Sylus had burned through his mana core.

He didnt hold anything back trying to save his sister, but in the process, he damaged his core, making it impossible for him to tap into his powers or elements. Now he wasnt ever going to get anything other than E-rank jobs.

"Big brother!"

Freya yelled from the other side of the store, snapping Sylus out of his daze. He looked up to see her standing there with a smile on her face; she had veggies in her hand, about to put them in the cart.

"Do you want potatoes or should I only make the chicken?" she asked, acting like a child would act in front of a parent.

"You're the one doing the cooking, I will gladly take whatever you make." Sylus grinned. He knew what would happen if she couldn't make a choice.

Freya turned to running to pick out what she needed for what she planned to make.

"She is getting stronger by the day; soon, she might even hit the captain rank someday."

He turned to look at the candy section, a smile still on his face. "But she still can't pick out ingredients."

Almost immediately, a throbbing headache caught up to Sylus. Wincing out of pain, he placed his hand on his forehead as the pain kept increasing, making it hard for him to breathe.

'Saint of Chaos.'

It whispered. Sylus couldn't tell where it was coming from, but if he could tell anything, it was that there was so much pain coming with the voice.

'Heir of Ruin.'

The voice added, Sylus let out a cry, falling to his knees as he tried to shake the voice off, but it kept taunting him like it wanted him to do something.

"What the hell is going on?"

Every time Sylus tried to stand up, the image of the man standing in the void location would pop up in his head, and he would have a hard time trying to see anything else.

Sylus was on the floor, breathing heavily, trying to stay sane as long as he could try knowing that whatever it was. It wasn't backing down, not until it took him apart.

The customers in the store close to Sylus were backing off, they saw him acting like a mad man, and they knew it wasnt going to be funny to stand close to anyone acting up this way.

"What is wrong with him?"

"Did the weather get to him or something?"

"I think we need to call someone."

Freya was checking out the things she bought on the other side when she turned. She saw the people gathering to look at someone curled up on the floor. She took another look and saw it was her brother.

"Big brother?" She didnt waste time on the counter with the clerk. She rushed to her brother once she was there. She pushed past everyone, determined to reach Sylus.

"Hey, move it, dont block me."

The people turned to see who it was; everyone was shocked to find one of the continent's finest warriors in the grocery store.

"It's her!"

"It's Freya Cage, the red griffin!"

Freya ignored the people behind her. She saw the state Sylus was in and how it wasnt looking nice. It was like he was slowly losing touch of sanity, but he couldn't tell if it was him or something else pulling.

'Who are you?'

'No, you're not real!'

'What are you?'

'Leave me alone!'

Sylus muttered, curling up on the floor, trying to hide his face as it looked like he was being pulled into a void.

"Brother, can you hear me?" She touched him, something like a little pull sucked a little bit of her mana. She lifted her hand from Sylus, looking at him. She could see that there was something out of her control happening right in front of her.

"Big brother?!" Freya called out, trying to see if she would be able to break through. And it was then that Sylus stopped whimpering, turning to see Freya right next to him.

His body shaking uncontrollably...
