Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Waiting For Two Heartbeats

It was 3:00 AM.

A gentle drizzle was falling outside. While the city slept in silence, Bharsha suddenly woke up. It wasn't just another discomfort; a sharp, agonizing pain was radiating through her body.

With great effort, she called out to Arindam, "Arindam... wake up..."

Arindam sat up instantly, as if he had been waiting for that call even in his sleep. One look at her face was enough. "Is the pain getting worse? I'm getting the car ready right now!"

The hospital bag was already packed and waiting by the door. But no amount of preparation can truly prepare you for the reality of this moment. In the car, Arindam gripped Bharsha's hand tightly, though his own hand was trembling and cold as ice.

As the stretcher sped down the hospital corridor toward the OT, the doctor gave Arindam a brief look. "It's a twin pregnancy; there's always a bit of risk involved. But we are doing our best."

The word "risk" hit Arindam like a physical blow. The stretcher stopped at the OT doors. Bharsha looked at him with tired eyes—eyes that held a haunting plea amidst the pain.

"Take care of our babies, Arindam..." she whispered.

Arindam couldn't find his voice; he simply nodded, his throat tight with unshed tears. The doors closed, and the red light flashed on.

In the silent corridor, the ticking of the clock sounded like cannons. Arindam stood leaning against the wall, his head bowed. Scenes from the past flashed before him like a movie—the shy girl by the school window, her first smile, those rainy afternoons. He prayed silently, "Just keep her safe... keep them all safe."

Minutes felt like eons. Suddenly, the sound of a cry pierced the silence of the OT. A nurse stepped out, and Arindam rushed to her.

"How is she? What happened?"

The nurse smiled. "The first baby is here. He's healthy and crying loudly!"

A weight the size of a mountain lifted off Arindam's chest. But then the nurse added, "The second one is a bit weak. The doctors are working on it."

The suffocating wait returned. A few moments later, a very faint, thin cry drifted out. To Arindam's ears, that second cry was the most beautiful music in the world.

The doctor stepped out and smiled. "Congratulations! Both are safe. And the mother is doing perfectly fine."

Arindam couldn't hold it back anymore. He sank against the wall and wept—tears of sheer relief and overwhelming gratitude.

Later, he was allowed inside. Bharsha looked exhausted, but there was a divine glow on her face. Beside her lay two tiny, soft infants.

Arindam leaned in and kissed her forehead. "You did it, Bharsha. You were incredible."

Bharsha gave a faint smile. "No, we did it together."

As Arindam reached out to one of the babies, a tiny hand wrapped firmly around his finger. He shuddered as an ethereal sensation surged through his veins.

"The seats by the window are finally full, Bharsha," he whispered.

Bharsha smiled. Outside, the rain had stopped. The first light of dawn was peeking through the eastern sky. After a long, dark night, a new sun had risen in their lives.

This storm didn't break them; it made them unbreakable. From this day forward, they aren't just a story of two lovers—they are a complete and whole family.
